    1. [GEORGIA] Counties and surnames
    2. Anne Brown
    3. Laurie, I have many nieces and nephews who graduated from Hernando High. Where in Pasco Co. did you live? We moved to Brooksville about 21 years ago from Hollywood, FL. Love it here! My married name is Brown. But, my husband's name wasn't originally Brown. His father was born in Austria and after coming to America, he changed his name to Brown. We have never learned why he did this. His real name was Joseph Anton Hubert. My husband, Joe's maternal grandparents were named Aspromonte and came from Italy. My maiden name was Coots. My main surnames for GA were, Alums, Burton, Coots, Doggett, Evans, Grant, Ham, Herrin, Jeffries, Ross and Tuggle. Most were in Muscogee, Harris, Oglethorpe, Jasper, Wilkes, and Greene Counties, GA and some in Barbour,Lee and Russell Counties, AL. 2. And add to the fact that many graves had HEADBOARDS, and no headstones, which have eroded away by wood rot, and no longer exists. Bill

    2. I know of at least one cemetery in Georgia that is now under water. The Harper Cemetery on Pistol Creek in Lincoln County, Georgia. The graves of my Harper ancestors are there, much to my sorrow. See below: >From "Wilkes County Cemeteries," by F. M. and Nell H. Newsome, page 182: These cemeteries are now under water. If they had markers with names and dates they have been destroyed. The names, dates and locations here are from family records, old Bibles, courthouse records, newspaper clippings, etc. Harper Cemetery On Pistol Creek In Lincoln County, GA Dorothy O'Neill -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Tue, 24 Oct 2006 7:39 AM Subject: [GEORGIA] Missing Graves This past week-end, I attend a Genealogy Workshop sponsored by my DAR chapter. The speaker mentioned something I had never thought of before. She said there were areas that were flooded and made into lakes by TVA. These areas contained many cemeteries and people were contacted to ask what they wanted done with their loved one's remains. They were given the choice to move the remains or just leave them and let them be underwater. She said records were kept of the people contacted and choices made. Now, I did not hear where she said the records were, but I believe they would be with the TVA or the state. Has anyone else heard of this and do you know where these records might be? 2. I'm not sure, but if records were kept, I would think TVA headquarters in Tennessee should be able to help you. Corporate headquarters are in Knoxville: Tennessee Valley Authority 400 W. Summit Hill Dr. Knoxville, TN 37902-1499 Phone: 865-632-2101 The website (http://www.tva.gov/), says "Send your questions or comments to [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>." 3. There were eight Georgia land lotteries: 1805 1807 1820 1821 1827 1832 Land Lottery 1832 Gold Lottery 1833 Fractions Lottery The 1832 Land, 1832 Gold, and 1833 Fractions lotteries distributed the Cherokee land. Based on your description, I think you have "The Cherokee Land Lottery, Containing a Numerical List of the Names of the Fortunate Drawers in Said Lottery, With an Engraved Map of Each District" compiled by James F. Smith and published in 1838 by Harper & Brothers. This book has the list of land lots distributed in the 1832 Georgia Land Lottery in order by land lot, with the names of the fortunate drawers. In 1833, M. D. J. Slade published the prizes drawn in the 1832 Gold Lottery. I hope this helps. Paul K.
