    2. History of the Great Kanawha Valley, Volume II, Page 49: James George was born October 7, 1846, his father being David George and his mother Elizabeth Hereford, a daughter of Maj. John Hereford. David George was a native of Gallia county, Ohio, born in 1814, and came to Mason county with his father when a boy four years of age. He was a son of James George, who was a native of North Carolina, of Scotch descent. James George settled in Mason County on 590 acres of land, his father having purchased the first land in this county off of the Mercer estate. He was also one of the first to settle in Hannan district. He married a Miss Ward, and their children were.' Elizabeth, William, Jessie, Mary, David, Judah and Rachel, The children of David George and Elizabeth Hereford, who became his wife, were: Elizabeth, Sarah, Mary, Margaret, James, Kate, John. The father of these children died June 12, 1887, on the farm where he settled, and his wife preceded him to the grave in 1873. James George remained with his father until twenty-one years of age, and then took a trip to Missouri and Kansas in the year 1867. In the next year be returned and took up the occupation of farming. June 4, 1868, be married Emma C. Hereford, and their children are: Lelia, Bertha and Judson. Mrs. George is a daughter of James T. Hereford. In 1864 he bought a farm in connection with his father, which he settled on four years later, Mr. George now owns this farm himself, and has added to it 400 acres. He and his wife are members of the Baptist church. He served as deputy sheriff for six years, one term under H. G. Nease, and he is now serving a term under George Poffenbarger.
