Hi Everyone, Does anyone know where Nicholas and John George of Isle of Wight, Virginia came from in England? Contact me at Pat48084@aol.com
Looking for any information on two brothers, Robert and Alexander, who settled in Washington County, PA in the late 1700s. Also interested in any information about their parents, their wives, and their children. Robert was born about 1744 in Ireland. He came to America sometime before the Revolution and fought in that was as member of John Reed's Company of the Lancaster County PA militia. He was later promoted to Captain. He married Christiana PLANCE, a native of Germany, and, sometime before 1790, moved to Washington County PA. They had fourteen children -- Thomas (who became a judge in Jefferson County, OH), Robert (who moved to Carroll County, OH), David, Alexander (who reportedly moved to Illinois), John, Margaret (who married John SLATER), Elizabeth (who married James McMASTERS and moved to Carroll County, OH), Hannah (who married James ROBINSON), Anna (who married Mitchel RAMSEY), Jane (who married Thomas ROBB), Jacob, and three unknown children. Robert died 15 Aug 1819 in Fallowfield Township, Washington County, PA. His wife, Christiana, lived on to the ripe old age of 91, dying on 28 Jun 1851. I know less about Alexander. He was also a member of John Reed's Company and later moved to Washington County, PA. He was married at least twice, once to a ____ HOSACK and then to Elizabeth RINGLAND. He had a number of children -- sons John, Thomas, and Robert, and daughters Ann CRABB, Mary HUNTER, and Sarah STORY are mentioned in his will. This document also refers to his wife Elizabeth's sons Michael, Henry, and William GEORGE. Alexander died 21 Jun 1813 in Washington County, OH. Any information will be appreciated.
Hi Irene: I saw your posting on the GEORGE list, and just wanted to say "Hi and thanks", and maybe offer a little help. My great, great-great and great x 3 grandparents were all GEORGES that lived in Switzerland, but my mother had heard they may have come from Greece originally. This is the first mention anyone has made of the GEORGE name being Greek, so thanks for that. Secondly, I notice you have webtv. My parents are about 5 years older than you and I have been wondering if this would be a good way to keep in touch regularly and inexpensively. (They're in Canada and I'm in Texas.) They wouldn't want to learn to operate a computer, but I'm sure they could handle email on webtv. But do you have to pay long distance charges every time you send a message that's not local, just like a phone? And how much do you pay per month for webtv? I've heard around $25.00 or so. I'd sure appreciate any comments you may have. Also, can I make a suggestion? There are a few less-than-honest people with access to the internet, and you might be wise to be cautious about giving out too much personal information, such as your EXACT date of birth, especially when it's not absolutely necessary. I'm noting some ships/passenger list sites which may be of interest to you, and hopefully if I type them correctly and they are in blue on this message you can just click onto them and get to the websites: <http://netmender.net/genealogy/passlist.html> <http://members.oal.com/rprost/passenger.html> <http://freespace.virgin.net/alan.tupman/sites> <http://home.att.net/~arnielang/> <http://www.nara.gov/publications/microfilm/immigrant/rg36.html> Hope this helps you find your Greek connection. Looking forward to hearing from you. One suggestion: The KansasCity-L for the greater KC area is a pretty active group. If you care to join and post to it, subscribe at: KANSASCITY-L-REQUEST@rootsweb.com If you don't want to join, I would be glad to edit your message to the GEORGE- L group for the KC group and post it for you. I'm never sure if answers go to non-list members when I do that, but I'm willing if you are. Nancy
I have recently finished transcribing a decaying journal written by my grandmother in during the period of 1922 till her death in 1933. Initially the information which I had was that her father, my great-grand father, was Alexander Ross whom married Martha Relf Neil. They had immigrated from Nairn Scotland with their daughter, Anna Ross, to Chicopee Falls, MA 1899. While residing in Chicopee Falls, Alexander Neil Ross was born Nov. 10, 1899 and my grandmother, Janet Finley Ross on Feb. 22, 1904. While there Alexander Ross worked for the Spalding Sporting goods company manufacturing golf clubs. They later apparently moved to New York and on to Excelsior Springs Missouri. There Alexander was the golf professional in charge of the Excelsior Springs Golf Course. Martha Relf Neil Ross died Dec. 27 1924. Alexander apparently remarried as his obituary shows that he left, in addition to the children, a wife named Kate. Alexander died Sept. 27, 1930. Prior to his death, Anna Ross married C. Edward George. The marriage license was issued in Liberty Missouri, though the article providing this information did not have the date. They had at least one child, Flora Ann George, born in St. Joseph Missouri on June 3, 1928. I have been unable to locate any further information regarding this sister or her issue. I do plan a trip to the area where they resided in the near future. Alexander Neil Ross married Cora Leone Ford on April 12, 1921, in San Diego CA. Leone Ford Ross died about August 1969 with Alexander Neil Ross following on Jul 25, 1973. There were no children from this marriage. My grandmother, Janet Finley Ross graduated from the Excelsior Springs High School, Class of 1922. She later married Francis (Frank) Nicol in January 8, 1929, in Richmond Missouri. They had one child, my mother Martha Jean Nicol, on Aug 24, 1930, also in Richmond Missouri. Janet died on December 10, 1933, in Kansas City Missouri. While I do not have a death certificate to verify, my mother relates that the death was as a result of complications with child birth. While transcribing the journal, there were various newspaper articles which made reference to a brother and sister of Alexander Ross's. A brother named William Ross, who was killed in 1917 in the Dardanelles during World War I, while fighting with the Highland Regiment. There was also mention of at least one sister, named Margaret Ross Robertson, visiting from Nairn Scotland. Other articles list her as a former resident of Excelsior Springs who moved to Detroit. An article written shortly after my grandparents marriage regarding a steam ship trip that they had taken to Sidney Australia to visit Francis's parents and siblings, relates that they would stop on the return trip in San Francisco and visit an aunt, Mrs. William Berrick. Whether this was an aunt or Ross or Neil linage is unknown. Francis Nicol was born in Kilsyth Parish in Scotland on Aug 26, 1903. He immigrated to the US while the remainder of the immediate family immigrated to Australia. The other family members are, father: Francis Nicol, born 1862, married Janet Millart (other documents relate Ferguson) Jan 03, 1888, died Dec 13, 1931. Janet Millart's birth and date of death are unknown. Siblings: Margaret Nicol, Charlotte Nicol, Dan Nicol, Jean Nicol born 1902, John Nicol born 1905 (he later joined Frank in the US and died in San Diego, CA in Dec 1970. One additional sister was born in 1906, named Mary Lindsey Nicol. All immigrated to Australia. I thank you all for bearing with me while you read this mini-novel and I hope that something in it will tie in with a bit of information you may have. Thank you and have a Happy New Year, Doug Routh
GEORGE Cousins, I am looking for others who might be researching this line in order that we may correspond and share data.
