    1. Re: John and Robert George
    2. Marty Grant
    3. Hi Pamela (and George List), The John GEORGE & Jane COLE line is mine also. You have a few things listed in your posting, that I thought I'd talk about. I'm working on a book for the John GEORGE family, so I'm trying to contact as many descendants as possible. I'd like to know more about your branch of the family also. First of all, Robert GEORGE is a grandson of John, they didn't come over together. Robert was born in 1666. On 7 Jul 1635 John GEORGE received a Patent for 900 acres in Charles City County, VA for transport of 850 people, including his wife Jane GEORGE. It is thought he was already there since at least 1632, though no proof of that has been found. I have never heard of GORGE and GEORGE being the same name, but who knows! <g> The earliest record I have of our John GEORGE is the Will of his father-in-law Humphries COLE dated 4 Nov 1623, Tillingham, Essex Co, England. In this will he names his "son in law John George, Yeoman". I haven't done any research in England, so I don't know much else about the family there. There were records of a John GEORGE in Writtle, Essex Co, England, which may be ours. More research needs to be done on that. John GEORGE was a Burgess in Virginia in 1647 and 1652. He was a Justice for the years 1646, 1666, 1667, and 1677. He made his Will 2 Aug 1678 in Isle of Wight Co, VA. John was a Major, then later a Lt. Colonel, then finally a Colonel by the time of his death. John's son was Isaac GEORGE, born 20 Feb 1635/1636. Isaac married Hester FAWDON ca 1654, daughter of Major George FAWDON. Isaac and Hester moved to Middlesex Co, VA and had at least two sons: Robert and John. Robert GEORGE was born 20 Feb 1665/1666 in Isle of Wight and died 21 Jan 1733/1734 in Middlesex Co, VA. He married the widow Sarah Elliott, widow of Thomas ELLIOTT. Her maiden name isn't known. I don't believe it is ELMORE (unless someone has a source for that). Robert & Sarah had several children, including my ancestor John GEORGE born 18 Aug 1704 in Middlesex Co, VA and died 1784 in Caroline Co, VA. He married first to Mary JORDAN and 2nd to Ursula DUDLEY. I'm from the first marriage. John & Mary had several children including my ancestor James GEORGE. James was born ca 1738 and died 1799 in Pittsylvania Co, VA. He married Elizabeth NODEN in Caroline Co, VA ca 1760. I have lots more on the GEORGE family, including all known branches. I am attempting to document the family as fully as possible. There has been alot of info in print that is just flat out wrong. I'm attempting to correct alot of that. Let me know how I can help you with your line. I'd love to exchange information with you. Talk to you later. 3. John and Robert George came to the colonies July 7, 1635 on the ship Assurance and brought 250 families with them. John George was married to Jane Cole. At the time he was 19 years old. A researcher in Reading, England said they were the Gorges and sent proof that they used the name Gorges and George interchangeably. However I have no proof that they did so. They made several trips back to Bristol, England. John George was in the House of Burgesses as well as George Fawdon. Robert George married Sarah Elliott (Elmore) in Virginia. I know this goes back a ways but it would be greatly appreciated if anyone had any information on this line.
