I taking a genealogy class. I have learned that in 1838 and 1840 Iowa was counted in the WI Territorial Census. Would someone please send me a url (or two) of where I can find any information pertaining to that? Thank You Very Much, Sarah [email protected]
Actually, that is NOT quite correct! If you will go to this site www.us-census.org/states/map.htm you will find a whole series of maps that correspond with EACH of the federal census years. If you look at the 1830 map you will see that it is in an area called "unorganized territory". It became the "Iowa Territory" in 1838 (look at the 1840 census map), and it became the state of Iowa in 1846. So between 1838 and 1846 it would have still been Iowa Territory. Hope that helps. By the way, you can print off these census maps for future reference. I use them to teach a genealogy class myself. Another place you can find more info about census is by going to www.nara.gov which is the National Archives site.
