One of the people I was very interested to learn more about when I started tracing my family history 3 years ago, was one of my great uncles, Albert ACKROYD. Albert was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, England towards the end of 1874. He began his working career in the Bradford mills. My father says that he served in the Royal Navy during World War 1. After the war, he migrated to the USA - 3 of his sisters were already there. I have found a record of him arriving at Ellis Island on 31 January 1922. My father has always said that he was found dead in the street in Chicago in the mid 1920s. Last week I contacted one of my father's cousins in Kansas & she had another story altogether. She says that he worked at Manningham Mills which were silk mills & was highly skilled. As a result he was recuited after the war to work at Pheonix Hosiery in Milwaukee. He worked there for some time then opened a pub in Milwaukee & eventually died there. The cousin's mother went to the funeral. 'If I had to guess, I would say in the 1950s' she said. Albert's death doesn't appear in the SSDI. Now Wisconsin, I have to confess, is an area I know nothing about. Can anybody suggest any possible avenues to follow this up. Is there a death index which would help? Many thanks for any suggestions anybody can make. Rosemary, I found Albert ACKROYD in the 1930 census, age 50. Wife Augusta, age 52. Also one son listed. It lists his occupation as Dyer, Hosiery and that he emmigrated in 1922. It also states he was born in England. This sounds like the person you are looking for. If you like, I can mail you a copy. I live in Wisconsin. Many thanks to Tammie, Brenna, Gail & Patricia who gave me a great deal of help with my search for Albert ACKROYD. It seems that he died between 1934 & 1944 so I shall order his death certificate & take it from there. Rosemary Ackroyd Melbourne, Australia
