Hello to the list. I am looking for my ggrandfather Griffith Roberts. He was born in about 1825 in Bala, Wales. With his wife Marietta and 4 children then left Wales and moved to the Columbus, Wisconsin area in about 1856-57. He was killed/died in about 1864-65 but I cannot find any record of where he may be buried. The family story is the he died in the Prairie-Du-Chen area, but this cannot be proven and does not make any sense to me as that is a long way from the place where his family was living. Is there any records of death or any headstones in either the Columbus or Prairie-Du-Chen area that would give me a clue as to where he may be buried. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated as I am getting a very bad headache from hitting my head on this brick wall. Thanks to any how could help. Ron
Ron, Have you checked the County websites for these two areas? You can go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~wigenweb/map.html and click on Columbus County. If you navigate around, there is a lot of information on that site. For Prairie Du Chien, go to Crawford County way on the west side of the state. Sometimes, for those early records, you may need to check church records. So, if you can locate where your ggrandfather is buried, and you have an idea of the religion he would have been, you could contact the area churches. They have records going back to when the church first started in most cases. If the records aren't at one church, they may have been moved to another larger church in the area. If he was Catholic, the Diocese would probably have the records. Because you know that he was killed as a result of an accident, once you find the area that he was living, you should be able to find an article in an old newspaper that mentions the accident and his death. The Wisconsin State Historical Society in Madison has all of the old newspapers on film, but local libraries have many of the newspapers on films, too. If you are out of state, you could check on inter-library loan. I don't live in that part of the State, otherwise I would offer to look. I have a few other ideas, so if you need some other suggestions, contact me directly, offlist at llmcgoey@athenet.net .
