    2. pgleich
    3. Hi everyone! We have sent out numerous flyers and e-mails trying to let everyone know we are holding a FREE Family History Month Genealogical Fair on Saturday, 9 October at the Faith Christian School on Highway 67 at Williams Bay WI. This is just outside of Williams Bay, a short distance away from the Williams Bay Observatory with the extremely large telescope. The Fair will run from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. (Walworth County is just over the Illinois border and we work a great deal with the upper Illinois counties.) There will be mini-demos, mini-lessons, door prizes, surprises and food served all day long. And there will be a kids table featured this year! We sent announcements to many societies, libraries and family history centers, as well as vendors and other genealogically-related venues. We hope you will contact your group to see if they are planning on attending. We need to know as soon as possible. Is your group being represented from WI, IL or your area? If not, and you wish to have them attend, please let them know immediately. We hope to hear from you! You may contact me for more Fair information at pgleich@sbcglobal.net or at 608-752-8816. Check out our Walworth County website at www.walworthcgs.com. Thank you! Peggy

    3. Hi Ashley, I use Marathon Co. Courthouse a lot and will be going again within several wks; I could look up some things for you, get copies if you like? I have to say that the staff at first seemed stand- offish but I have gotten to know some of them a little w my trips and they are friendly and helpful. If I had let my first impressions of them stand, and had not gone again, I might have thought the same as you w Milwaukee, which I cannot address, not having been there yet. I do plan on going there in the near future as I have things to do; I am forewarned re the attitude and frankly, if I encounter it, I probably will say something as that is my nature (good or bad!) They are public employees and as I pay state taxes, so to speak I am helping pay their salary. I do find that, usually, hopefully in this case as well, that the old addage 'kill em w kindness' helps a lot; if nothing else 'death by chocolate'/I'll take donuts! Sue

So much so, when I went to Marathon County, where I have an entire line, I avoided going to the courthouse.. Not sure why they had to make it so unpleaseant. But I watched someone ask a question, and while the clerk did come back and answer the man, she had a tone in her voice that made it so there was no way I was going to ask one... And man, wear a watch, and get the blazes out of there when your time is up.. even if you are alone back there... no going over.

    3. Iris, and whomever would need a duplicated copy, Grandma died in 1976 and Grandpa in 1962. I got duplicating machine copies at the vital records office for 25 cents each about 2 years ago in the summer. Really. In fact, the duplicates off the microfilm were somewhat easier to read than one of the official death certificates, to my eyes, and for one of them I did pay for an official copy too. One was too illegible to bother with spending more than a quarter. As far as I know, I've got nobody in the family who died in Wisconsin earlier than Grandpa in 1962. I definitely wasn't looking at pre - 1907 certificates. They really are available after 1907, at least in Madison. I don't know what the ARC holdings are. I've not looked at individual county records either but I may sometime, as that illegible one bothers me. But the reason for Madison having the records is partly to have a central repository and, if you go there yourself or can find someone to go for you, the copies are available, officially at rather a lot of dollars, and unofficially at a small part of a dollar. I do also find it most irritating that WI has so little on line. If MN can put all the birth, death, and marriage records on line, why can't WI? Well, we already know the answer: they get more money out of us, or so the budget crunchers think, if they keep control over all the data. Wouldn't it ever occur to one of these bean counters that the more people who can find data on line, the more people who will want official copies of the data they find, like Grandma's and Grandpa's death certificates? Indeed, if those things were only $4 or $5 rather than the $12 Iris mentioned, I'd even have an official copy of the illegible one. Instead of a sale for 25 cents, they could have had me spending another $4 or $5. However, I won't waste $12 for something illegible even if official. Also, WI doesn't put these things on fine papers. I ordered death certificates from Florida for members of my father's family and they came on engraved bank note paper, multicolored and beautiful. THAT's a certificate that LOOKS like something, something real, something official. Didn't cost $12 either. Bean counters, blah. 3. What you all don't know, or maybe haven't realized, in Wisconsin certificates escalated in price because of RIGHT to LIFE lobbying. A portion ofthe cost o every certificate goes to RIGHT to LIFE lobbyists to continue their lobbying. Personally, I object to that. Why do those who don't believe in Right to Life have to support those who do? It used to be certified copies were $10-12.00 & non certified were $2.00. Now we pay the same for either. Lobbying should be supported by those who believe in whatever the issue is, not paid for MANDATORILY by everyone whether they believe or not. I'm not saying whether I believe in RIGHT to LIFE or not. This is not the forum in which to discuss those issues. Rosemarie in Wisconsin.

    1. Post-1907 DEATH Index (1959-1997)
    2. Nancy Schroeder
    3. There is a post-1907 death index for deaths occurring from 1959-1997. You can find information on it at the LDS Family History website, www.familysearch.org Click on Library catalog, place name, then type in Wisconsin, and go to Vital records, indexes. These indexes do not circulate to the Family History Centers, but you can get a form at a FHC which you then fill out with the name you are researching, and for a small fee (when I used it, the fee was $2.00), and you then send it to the Main Library at Salt Lake City. They will send you back a printout of everyone with that surname and the date and county of death. There are, of course, a lot of years not indexed, but this resource is available if you are looking for a date or place of death in the years covered. I see they also have some marriage & divorce records for various time periods also.

    3. Please don't judge all Wisconsin counties by Milwaukee's standards. I live way up north in the state and every courthouse I have been in has had people who have been extremely friendly and helpful. I tend to think that "big city" government people are less friendly than "small-town folks." It is true that post-1907 birth certificates cost $12.00, and marriage & death certificates are $7.00. Doesn't matter if they are certified or not, price is the same. It is much quicker to send a request to the Register of Deeds in the county of the event rather than sending to the state office in Madison. Same price, just quicker service. I sent for a death certificate from Ashland County and got it returned in 3 days! It's getting tougher to obtain vital records in all states. I started doing my genealogy research in 1991 and had quick & easy access to vitals in most states until about 2001. The events of 9/11/01 have precipitated changes affecting many areas of life. Just my 2ยข worth, Nancy

    3. Living in Wisconsin, this is my experience to obtain post-1907 death certificates. Madison has a form that they require to be filled out and sent in along with payment. If you want a certified copy, the cost is, I believe, $12.00; but if you want a copy for genealogy purposes (not for collecting insurance or any other legal purpose), the cost is $7.00. After completing the form, sign it and send it in to Madison. I don't recall exactly, but it takes a few weeks to get the copy, but I've never had a problem getting a copy as long as I knew most of the information that was required on the form. If you following this link, you can download the form that is required not only for deaths, but for births and marriages, etc as well: http://www.dhfs.state.wi.us/VitalRecords/index.htm Kind regards, Linda ----- Original Message ----- From: IrisLillie@aol.com To: GenWisconsin-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, August 25, 2004 6:32 PM Subject: Re: [GenWisc] which state death certificates 1907+ In a message dated 8/25/2004 6:25:13 PM Central Daylight Time, grubisic@netwurx.net writes: The copies from microfilm cost about 25 cents. 3. Are we talking about the same state here? A couple years ago I made an appointment and drove to Madison, Wisconsin, to the vital records office. The clerk helping me explained everything most especially how to take the microfilm over to the copy machine to do a copy from the microfilm that I could take home. In Wisconsin. Is this the state you meant to write in your posting? Because the clerk was very, very helpful about every other part of the process too. I looked up family and friends of the family and got lots of genealogy information cleared up the two times I went. The copies from microfilm cost about 25 cents. If Wisconsin is in fact what you meant to write in your posting, I'm sorry your own experience wasn't cheap and helpful. Ashley ----- Original Message ----- From: KurtKathKels@aol.com Subject: [GenWisc] Wisconsin death certificates 1907+ Hello, I was wondering whether there was any way to obtain post-1907 Wisconsin death certificates at a cheaper rate than the state rate. Is there someone in Madison, for instance, that makes copies from microfilm? I have several certificates that I would love to order, but the cost is so prohibitive. Any ideas? Sincerely, Katherine Bellingham, WA *************************** I am in the same boat... the only thing that I have heard is if you can get some one from the list that is going there themselves to look something up for you... or pay a genealogist which would not be cheaper than just ordering the thing.. Wisconsin does not allow you to make copies, take pictures or even be in there with out an appointment... I haven't dealt with a lot of states, but they for sure are one of the least "user freinly" ones that I have dealt with... I was in the records in Milwaukee. No place to sit down, no clock, and a good yelling at if you go over your time... Iris
