One possibility--were you able to discover from the 1850 census exactly where she was living in Wisconsin? Do you know whether she was a church member and, if so, what denomination? And is there a church of that denomination in the community? If so, do its records go back to 1850? That's lots of "ifs." Just a thought. Good luck! I know she was living in Walworth county in 1850 and I know where she is buried. I hadn't thought about churches ... I'll have to find which ones are the oldest in Whitewater and start there. I get back to Wisc every couple of years or so. Most of my family still lives there. I also started checking Knapp's in Walworth County and found one family that is a possible match. The oldest child is age 28 in 1850 and the next one is age 18. My Amanda, at age 25, would fit. Since she married in 1846, she wouldn't appear in the household. It's a long shot and I'm not quite sure how to confirm it. I also haven't checked probate, tho I doubt I'll find anything. Thanks for the help. Maybe some mistakes were meant to be. My Amanda Knapp was b. 1825 in New York but family tradition has listed has as from Ohio. She is my brick wall, as she died in 1858 in Wisconsin -- too early for obits or death index. And the 1850 census doesn't list parents' birthplaces. So I have no idea who her parents were. Any help would be greatly appreciated on where I should look next. BTW, Sue, I live in Colorado Springs. Marilyn, Do you live in Wisconsin?
Barron County also had a HUGE influx of Norwegians.
Thanks, Cami! That's very helpful and will give me a focused place to start. Rosemary, I disagree. Though the fire subject is of no use to me genealogically as I haven't anyone involved, I find the link fascinating and very helpful, and isn't that what this list is for?
Hi Marilyn! I haven't seen this suggested yet, so I thought I'd throw this out in case it helps. I don't know how big the lumbering industry was in Jackson County, but I know Jackson County had a very large Norwegian immigrant population. I have two Norwegian families, HANSON (who were STUBRUD before emigrating) and BENSON (who were IVERSON before emigrating). In the BENSON family, Simon BENSON (my gr-great grandmother's brother) became a giant in the lumber industry out in the Pacific Northwest, and his father Berger IVERSON/BENSON, worked in lumber camps in the Black River Falls, Jackson Co., area after emigrating in 1867, according to a book on Simon BENSON. I also have a GREEN family in the area who owned a mill. The Black River Falls library has an excellent history section, and the history librarian is very helpful. Good luck! Cami <<I looking for a needle in a haystack. I am seeking information about Abraham Olson/Olsen Mjeld, who immigrated from Norway in 1882 and, according to family information, died in a logging accident in Wisconsin in 1885. I am particularly interested in learning where in Wisconsin he lived. Does anyone have any suggestions for finding him? Does anyone have information on which Wisconsin counties had logging industries in 1885? Thanks. Marilyn>>

The Peshtigo Fire was so huge that flames came here to Door County over the bay! Yes all the way over the bay. At the same time as the Peshtigo Fire was the great Chicago Fire. Have a great day!
