    3. That is a great idea and what makes it hard is not seeing someone's adress in the look up request. So if people decide to do as you mentioned, then let's make sure to include a email address so it makes it easier on the person helping! ;) Sincerely, Tonya Cowling Bales SC On Sat, 10 Jun 2000 16:28:30 -0500 Margit Bakke <mbakke@eot.com> writes: > Hello All, > Whenever I offer to do lookups "to see if someone is in a book", I > always > insist that they ask offlist, or I do not do the lookup. > What information we exchange, is then between us! > Margit > > IrisLillie@aol.com wrote: > > > You know the thought just crossed my mind.... 3. Yes, I would really like to know myself. That way I can decide what to do next as to sharing information. It is funny since most of the information on one of my lines, I read in a book that was written. Whenever I share information to others (since that is how I was taught to do it), I acknowledge the author and give the name of book. My email address is Mcbecca2@juno.com Thanks!! 3. Hello All, Whenever I offer to do lookups "to see if someone is in a book", I always insist that they ask offlist, or I do not do the lookup. What information we exchange, is then between us! 2. If you noticed that letter was written by an author... so far I liked the info from the guy that actually ran afoul of the copywrite laws.. He seem to know the most and what he seem to say is the info is there for all.... duplicating it is illegal... so no photocopies without permission.. passing on the info... is OK... Iris

    3. you hit the nail on the head, it seems to me that if you don't want the information used then why in the name of god did the morons put it on paper then into PUBLIC LIBRARIES, and the idiot that complained about the use of her book about the Cemeteries, wonder did she get permission from the families to screw around with the head stones and trod at will over our dead????? She dam sure didn't ask any of the STRAIGHT or PRICE family, wonder if she would like to be sued.???? I would be most happy to oblige her.so much for the information HY-WAY I reckon you have noticed the lack of flowing information on this sight now! Helen STRAIGHT aka Kitty Rose auntie@netins.net

    2. I seem to have run into a situation - very new to me where an individual is in control of a cemetery's records. This is in Wisconsin. In a telephone visit she indicated a willingness to find my records and headstones but after a 2 month wait (and a postcard of followup) no reply seems to be forthcoming. She said "their attorney told the Board the records should only be given out thru her." I may have offended her in discussing the situation and mentioning the WI Cemetery Association and the fine work they are doing "reading" the cemeteries and the records. I would like replies to this situation but please reply to me directly so we don't fill up the List such as we have just gone thru on copyrights. There may be some situation here that I just don't understand.

(Or travel world-wide to see with our own eyes.) Why do you collect and publish the info if you don't want anyone to use it? It doesn't seem to me that this is the kind of publication that a person would just read for the pleasure of reading. Until I read this, "Some have contended that by just writing down a name and plot number they are not in violation" I thought you just were referring to posting the information. Am I all confused here? I can't be the only one asking theses questions, am I? Lita - wondering, too then, about the info we get from other "private" individuals. If we unknowingly get copyrighted info from them are we still liable? We are knowingly putting ourselves at risk. I'm getting mightily confused. And losing a lot of the fun of researching my family trees! People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. 3. I would guess the best bet for any of us to do in regards to the Copyright laws is check the Official US Copyright page at http://lcweb.loc.gov/copyright or to contact this agency directly.(Since each of us as an individual would be responsible for what you do individually.) I have read through some of this above site and can get "confusiing", so I have just emailed the office to see what kind of a response I get. If anyone would like me to share any information I receive-just send me your email and I'll be glad to pass it on when I hear anything. 1. [GenWisconsin] Copyright
    2. Hi, All: Please excuse me for piping up on this issue. I've been on this list a while, though I haven't participated as of yet. I saw the discussion over the question of copyright, and thought I would chime in, though Deb Christensen's email was very good. This website might be helpful. It mainly talks about copyright as it pertains to genealogy, but could clear up a few questions. http://www.genealogy.com/genealogy/14_cpyrt.html I always find myself a little torn on this issue. I'm a writer (fiction novels) and have had my work stolen, altered, and reproduced for distribution ... not on a grand scale, but enough to appreciate that we have copyright laws. Yet when it comes to genealogical research, or other research that I do, I appreciate being able to easily share source information. One thing I don't recall if it was mentioned, that while an author's work is copyrighted as soon as the 'ink hits the paper' you cannot copyright facts. In a genealogical work, the author of the work's copyright extends to how the facts are presented, not to the facts themselves. So, doing look-ups and passing along factual information is perfectly acceptable, but technically, reproducing the pages for distribution is not. However, in my opinion, it's doubtful if anyone would be horribly upset if copies of pages were made and sent to others. But if those same pages were shared in a manner that made them publicly accessible; such as, posted on a website, or on a mail list that kept archives (as this one does) -- it could be a different story. That puts the reproduction in the public domain. And just as a disclaimer, I'm not a legal authority on this subject. 2. You know the thought just crossed my mind.... (I know it is rare) That who ever complained and sited the "violation" of law, was in fact just plain irritated about all the letters that were crossing in the open newsforum, about something that obviously didn't interest them... Perhaps, the lesson to be learned here is that on inquirers that really deserve a private response, maybe we ought to take the time and effort to make our personal questions personal..... I really think if Sally's gracious offer was the only POSTED letter that the scoundrel had seen, he wouldn't have thought to complain.... Again, just a thought for the future... Iris
