    1. [GenWisconsin] Book - History of Northern Wisonsin
    2. Paula Vaughan
    3. The complete 157 Waupaca County biogrphies have been posted to the website at http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Wi/WaupacaBios Most of these bios detail the many places these subjects had lived before coming to WI before 1881. Many of them give dates, marriages, spouses names and birth dates/places, check them out and see if you ancestor is there. Even if your ancestor isn't the main subject of one of the bios-he or she may be mentioned within someone else's bio. Also for the County Coordinators that have not seen or used this book. It is GREAT. This book is divided by county into each county's townships, etc. It gives a short history of the township/area and then usuually following the history are biographies of some of the people living in that township. I do not have the book or else I would list the counties it covers. (I photo copied the pages I needed.) But you most likely could get this book through inter-library loan. The name again is "History of Northern Wisconsin" and it was published by Chicago: Western Historical Company in 1881 Hope you find your ancestor here! The Lat is 423833N The Long. is 0891840W Springvalley was established 4 June 1846 Springvalley was discontinued 27 July 1866 If you look at a map of ROCK county.. Do you see Ordfordville, that is near the boarder of Green and Rock counties? Springvalley was just above Ordfordville. Janesville, the county seat is in the middle of the county, if you will go west from Janesville, almost to the boarder of Green county you will see Magnolia, below Magnolia is where Springvalley once was, below Springvalley you will see Ordfordville and below Ordford- ville you will see Avon. I had family there, my 3rd gr grandmother Lucinda (BUNTING) DIMICK was buried there 8 April 1870, along with three of her children, Jesse b there 30 May 1856 buried there 13 oct 1861, John L. born there 22 Sep 1862 buried there 22 Nov 1872 and Charles born there 7 Dec 1866 buried there 30 March 1867.. 2. Hi Leonora, I have information on one extended Heiden family in Milwaukee. Unfortunately there were several. The family was Catholic and came to Wisconsin about 1855. Does this sound familiar? Barb Vander Leest PhD

    2. Paula Vaughan
    3. I received an email reply from the US Copyright Office today, but will have to email them back. I had emailed two questions and they weren't clear on what I was asking in the one so will email them tonight. The second question I had asked was "I have a book copyright date 1881. Can I publish some of the information from this book on my website without breaking the copyright law? Answer-Any work published prior to 1923 is no longer protected by copyright in the United States and is therefore free to use. I will email them back with a clearer question on the other item we had discussed through the mail list and see what they say. I thought they were pretty fast with answer-I emailed over the weekend and got the answer this am. If any one wants to email with questions their email addres is: COPYINFO@loc.gov. I'll pass along what they have to say to my next email. 2. Lynne Bliss
    3. I understand the term "Fair use" and it makes sense. The problem is that many genealogists put their work "out there" for the purpose of assisting others with their research. I can understand how someone would not want to spend 20 years putting together a comprehensive GEDCOM only to have someone else download it, print it and SELL it. But if there is no mechanism in place to provide monetary compensation to that author and/or none is expected, the law says that copyright is still being violated. I think our laws have simply not caught up with technology. Lynne Bliss Colorado

    1. Re: [GenWisconsin] Re: copyright questions
    2. If one does not want to have their work sold, but wants to share it, the best way to do that is post it at every free place on the web... Those that put a tree on a pay site should not be shocked when it has value enough to sell... If it is posted everywhere on the web for free, who would pay for a copy?? Now, If one researched and compiled for the purpose of selling it, it would be down right discouraging to see their work all over the place on free sites, for the same reason... no one would pay them for the work they did... Catch 22, unless we observe just common sense laws... information is free as long as credit is given... Copies and reproductions are not... Iris

    3. Sorry I didn't catch your name, but, I would recommend that you try the Wisconsin State Historical Society: WSGS at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wsgs/cemetery.htm They will send you a copy of the cemetery at a "small" fee... They are great and worth the few dollars... and you will get it within a week of mailing your check!!! I don't know who you were talking with but it sounds like the same old garbage, CONTROL is power... not worth wasting your effort arguing with them. I went to the county and got a bunch of grief, so I just ordered them through WSGS and got a GREAT deal for my money... Just my thoughts... R/S MAK YOU WROTE: I seem to have run into a situation - very new to me where an individual is in control of a cemetery's records. This is in Wisconsin. In a telephone visit she indicated a willingness to find my records and headstones but after a 2 month wait (and a postcard of followup) no reply seems to be forthcoming. She said "their attorney told the Board the records should only be given out thru her." I may have offended her in discussing the situation and mentioning the WI Cemetery Association and the fine work they are doing "reading" the cemeteries and the records. I would like replies to this situation but please reply to me directly so we don't fill up the List such as we have just gone thru on copyrights. There may be some situation here that I just don't understand. ===== ===== TheStorm http://www.rootsweb.com/TheStorm MAK = "Mar sea ah Ann Keel" ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
