There was a whole series of books written about individual county histories in 1881. I have one of Layfayette co. That I bought from E-Bay auction, it`s an original and not a copy, cost me $100.05, but It is full of info and names. Theres another listed on e-Bay in history books and it is the same book publisher for a northern county. Does anyone have easy access to the State Historical society of Wisconsin Library? I did a check on PERSI and found reference to the Henry Kastner Bible 1824-1858 that was in the periodical Hawkeye Heritage in 1991. A copy of it is supposed to be in the SHS library. Any help would be appreciated! My g-g-grandmother was Sophia Hubbard. She was married to a Kastner in Wisconsin. He supposedly died in about 1858/1859. In about 1859 she gave birth to Henry K. Kastner in Beaver Dam, Dodge Co., WI. Sophia then married Jacob Holzhauser in 1859 and had the following children all in Dodge County: Amelia Holzhauser b: January 31, 1860 in Fox Lake, Dodge Co., WI Katherine Sophia Holzhauser b: August 06, 1862 in Beaver Dam, Dodge Co.,WI John Holzhauser b: November 30, 1863 in Beaver Dam, Dodge Co., WI Frances Holzhauser b: March 04, 1865 in Beaver Dam, Dodge Co.,WI Lena Holzhauser b: December 17, 1866 in Beaver Dam, Dodge Co., WI Thanks, Becky

<< The History of Northern Wisconsin, published in 1881. >> Do you know the author? I will be at our library today and see if I can come up with that title in our computer. Jacqueline jacroing67@aol.com
Hello everyone! I'm hoping someone can tell me where I might find a copy of the book, The History of Northern Wisconsin, published in 1881. I don't see it on any lookup list, and I'm in California. I'd be happy to write and pay a library or historical society for a copy of the material I need from it. But I'm pretty clueless where to even start asking about it. deb (Atwood) Christensen - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - deb Christensen (deb_msn@msn.com) Graphics Connection Forum http://www.computingcentral.com/topics/graphics/

Why not try www.geocities.com/cribbswh/obit/ - and research the county your family lived in? Might help. Hi Alan, Welcome to U.S. genealogy research! It sounds like you live in England and are seeking info on how to research in U.S. One of the LDS Family Research Centers in England (near you, hopefully) should be able to "order" Census microfiche for Wood Co.,WI. -Website: http://www.ldscatalog.com Unfortunatly, the 1890 Federal Census was distroyed, most people use voting registration records (which lists heads of households only), tax records, land records, and State Censuses for that decade. Area Research Centers in WI have history and genealogy records pertaining to several counties in that particular area. ARC information: http://www.shsw.wisc.edu/archives/arcnet/counties.html Each State is catagorized by county on USGenweb: http://www.usgenweb.org/ And of course Rootsweb, obviously you've found the Wisconsin mail-list. You may want to subscribe to the (more specific) Wood Co., WI . http://www.rootsweb.com/ scroll down to find the Mail-lists Catagory. Or just subscribe to: WIWOOD-L-request@rootsweb.com For Digest Mode: WIWOOD-D-request@rootsweb.com Good luck in your persuit of U.S. genealogy, Ellen - --------------------------------------------------- From: SturgessAG@cs.com To: GenWisconsin-L@rootsweb.com Date: Mon, 3 Jul 2000 16:40:50 EDT Hi all, I have just subscribed to this group and would like some help in tracing the parents of George Champley, born 1891 in Wisconsin. He married Louise (Lizzie) Rohde (also from Wisconsin). They had a son named Alvin Bernard Champley in 1915 born at Nekoosa, Wood County. It is believed that George's parents went to America from England, but I have not been able to find any details in England. Can anyone advise me where I can obtain bdm information for Wisconsin or possibly census records that might help. Also if anyone has these names in their tree, I'd love to hear from them. Hi Geoff, Had to chuckle when I read this one -- I'd bet the farm that it is supposed to be CHETEK, which is a town in Barron County, Wisconsin. Chetek is a small resort town about 50 miles north of Eau Claire WI, and probably about 100+ miles northeast of Minneapolis-St. Paul. It is quite popular in the summer as many tourists go there for great fishing. Many lakes around surround the area and it is really a beautiful place. Nancy

Using the book "Wisconsin, Its Counties, Townships & Villages" (published in 1994 by Origins, Janesville, WI) as my reference, I'd say there is nothing even close to the name *if* it had been based on a written primary source. But a birth place given in a death record might well be based only on a spoken reference. There is a Schaack in Rib Lake Township, Taylor County. Does any list member with an interest in Taylor County know how this name is pronounced? That is, upon only *hearing* the name, could one think there was a hard consonant in the middle of the name. Hello list, I've come across a place name in a funeral home record which I cannot identify. Nora Josephine (Poole) BROWN was born in Schatach, Wisconsin. Can anyone tell me anything about this place - the correct spelling, the county, etc? Thanks, Geoff Rasmussen Provo, Utah
Hey, Dan, I don't have a picture -- BUT, you might want to keep an eye out for old postcards. School buildings were one of the favorite subjects of that era. (I scour eBay for post cards relevant to the locales where family lived every week or so, in fact. It is a relatively inexpensive way to gain a picture of a slice of life of the area.) There are gadzillions of old postcards being sold and traded. I was utterly amazed when I stumbled across it. deb (Atwood) Christensen - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - deb Christensen (deb_msn@msn.com) Graphics Connection Forum http://www.computingcentral.com/topics/graphics/ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dan Patnode" <danpatnode@hotmail.com> To: <GenWisconsin-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 03, 2000 11:29 AM Subject: [GenWisconsin] Woodlawn school near Crandon > I recently learned that my grandmother, Ethel Ada JONES, taught at the > Woodlawn School in the Crandon rural school district from 1918-20. I recently learned that my grandmother, Ethel Ada JONES, taught at the Woodlawn School in the Crandon rural school district from 1918-20. Might someone be able to tell me exactly where the Woodlawn School is/was located? Kingston, Wisconsin is located in Green Lake County. The southwest corner of the county. Just west of Kingston is Dalton and then Portage. Many people go to Portage to shop and there is a hospital there. Kingston is a very small town with only a post office , restrauants and store. Wonderful food at the Kingston House and is home of a very large Amish settlement. Hope this helps. You said you were blocked by Java? Does that mean your email and/or connecting server does not handle java? Or that you have the ability to handle Java and the chat room doesn't? Sorry, I missed the chat. We use netscape which has java so if the chat blocks java I will not be able to participate in the future. Weren't java ability and java changes some of the Microsoft monopoly trial? Joyce
