Recently someone posted a url for a site which contained a roster of known Wisconsinites who served during the Civil War. I'm afraid I've misplaced it. Could someone send it to me again, please? When you are posting the BIOS if you come across one for MCCORMICK/MACK I would be interested. I am still trying to locate the parents of my great great grandfather who according to the 1910 Oregon census was born in Wisconsin as were both of his parent whose names I do not know. Jackie in Oregon

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazzette is part of http://www.newslibrary.com/ These are the same people who archive off our local newspaper. Prices might vary, but an article is only $1.95 from our paper though this service. I don't know about you, but I think it costs more than $1.95 to drive to my OWN local library and spin the microfilm machine, get a crummy copy, and drive home. ::grin:: The best part of this is that the search is free, you only order up the article you want. A display of the headline and the first few sentences shows up in the search. For obituaries in our paper, they're gathered together and called one article -- so you'd see only the first one, but it searches the entire "article". If it's the right date, VOILA, the name you searched for will be down there towards the bottom. I hope that helps. deb - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - deb Christensen (deb_msn@msn.com) Graphics Connection Forum http://www.computingcentral.com/topics/graphics/ ----- Original Message ----- From: "Farm Products, Inc." <farmprod@internetwis.com> To: <GenWisconsin-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 10, 2000 12:16 PM Subject: [GenWisconsin] Pittsburgh, PA obit??? > > > Does anyone know of a link where I can get a newspaper archive for an obit > online for a death that occurred on May 27 in Pittsburgh, PA? Area research centers, (branch centers associated with State Historical Society of Wisconsin) maintain vital records pre-1907. If your know the county, inquire from the appropriate center if the record exists. Also the LDS library has an index to pre-1907 vital records. I have had great luck, lots of support and help from these centers, as well as any local historical society. Good Luck. Side note--My g-g-g-grandmother married at 16, Fond du lac, the record exists. The web site for State Historical Society of Wisconsin is www.shsw.wisc.edu Click on Archives, then Area Research Centers. deb Christensen wrote: > I suppose I am wondering about this for two reasons... > > First, to find out if there's more likely to be a record of the marriage because of > a requirement for consent at that age, > > and second, to find out if this was fairly common. > > *very* few of the families in our family history during this period of time have > brides under 18, let alone 14 years old. > > deb > > - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - > deb Christensen (deb_msn@msn.com) > Graphics Connection Forum > http://www.computingcentral.com/topics/graphics/ > ----- Original Message ----- > From: <DWilso147@aol.com> > To: <GenWisconsin-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Monday, July 10, 2000 8:37 AM > Subject: Re: [GenWisconsin] Age of Majority for Marriage in Mid 19th Century WI > > > I have Ruth Emma THAYER b. 1837 m. 1851 Samuel A. I suppose I am wondering about this for two reasons... First, to find out if there's more likely to be a record of the marriage because of a requirement for consent at that age, and second, to find out if this was fairly common. *very* few of the families in our family history during this period of time have brides under 18, let alone 14 years old. deb - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - deb Christensen (deb_msn@msn.com) Graphics Connection Forum http://www.computingcentral.com/topics/graphics/ ----- Original Message ----- From: <DWilso147@aol.com> To: <GenWisconsin-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 10, 2000 8:37 AM Subject: Re: [GenWisconsin] Age of Majority for Marriage in Mid 19th Century WI > I have Ruth Emma THAYER b. 1837 m. 1851 Samuel A. Hey, folks, I just had a thought. Would a girl of 14 have been able to get married without her parent's consent/permission in 1858 or so in Wisconsin? Would the county have required registration or er, whatever, in such a case? Or is 14 an entirely unremarkable age for this period of time? deb - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - deb Christensen (deb_msn@msn.com) Graphics Connection Forum http://www.computingcentral.com/topics/graphics/
Hi, I don't know about Wisconsin laws pertaining to age of consent, but when I did research in Iowa, the IGS (Iowa Genealogical Society) told me that if my g-grandparents were not of age, they would need parental consent. They were both of age unfortunately. That marriage was in 1885, So I would speculate that they would need consent at 14. Hope that helps. Kathy Duncan Cawley
