I, too, would be interested in people arriving about 1830s from the Lower Alsace area of Germany/Belgium. My relatives named Birschbach and Petri(e) all came from that area. Has anyone answered you with information?

I've spent the better part of the last 20 years studying the Strangite Mormons (my family was prominent in that faith) and I'm not surprised that no mention was made in Jackson County, WI regarding the association of the people. After Strang's death in 1856, many of the Strangites abandoned their faith and lived quiet lives -- not even talking about the past within their families. To say they lost their faith would be untrue, I believe, but it would be correct to say they were no longer affiliated. Many of this group joined the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints which was organized in about 1860 with Joseph Smith III as Prophet and President and headquartered in Independence, MO. Others did not join any organized religious group and simply taught and lived their beliefs in their homes. To say that the Strangite Mormon Church died when James Jesse Strang died is not correct. The Church still exists today in Burlington, WI and other places. Their membership, however, is small. Anything else? Beaver Island, MI?? That would take alot of time and space. Go to <http://www.beaverisland.net> and visit the website there. They do have some history on the web, but the Strangite history is only superficially given. If you want more from me, just ask. Best regards, Norma
No one answered me directly. The only replies I got were those that were posted to the list. It seems from books I have checked that most people who emigrated at that time from that area came through LeHavre and Antwerp. I really don't have any other information.

It has photos. I can not send attachments to the mailing list. We have Lars Olsen Onsrud, age 24, son of Ole Jensen and Marie Larsdtr. Onsrud. The went to Dane Co. first and then to Coon Praire in 1853. (My grandfather's brother was there at the time.) It states he married Tonette Olsdtr. Hagestuen from Vardal. Their children were Oluf, Lewis, Henry, Otto, Carl, Nellie, Clara and Ella. It say Oluf was "Jernbanefullmektig i Westby." Ole O. Onsrud, born 1836, lived in Frenchville. There is more detailed information on his family. Information and photos of the above are on pages 140-142. Lars is also mentioned on page 397 in the information on his wife's family. That information, including photos, begins on page 395 with information about the family of Ole Thomsen Hagestuen (1814-1872) and his wife Oline (1814-1893) had six children and farmed in Ettrick.
