    1. Re: [GenWisconsin] Sarah Jane Wallace Marriage
    2. Dear Janice: With regard to your ancestor, Sarah Jane Wallace in the WI marriage index...I have been haunted by why I could not find her husband! And finally, I got a bright idea to just search using the County (Dane) and the date of the marriage (20 Oct 1861). The search results were for eight individuals...a nice round number for four marriages, I thought. As I paired the eight people up into four couples and discovered that the sequence numbers in each case are 38 numbers apart (with the bride's number always the larger), I was left with Sarah Jane Wallace, sequence #06336 and James J. Heldridge, sequence #06298. The couples all married in Dane County on 20 Oct 1861 are: Salome Rickenbaugh #15884 & Henry Windler #15846 John F. Vincent #15374 & Mary Jane Jones #15412 Nancy Wallace #07533 & Alvin Jones #07495 Sarah Jane Wallace #06336 & James J. Heldridge #06298 The most interesting part of this, to me, is that I'd be willing to bet that Mary Jane Jones and Alvin Jones are siblings, and that Nancy Wallace and Sarah Jane Wallace are siblings, thus making it a double double wedding!! What fun! I hope this helps you. Norma

I am, however, getting better at using various search techniques. About time, too, as I've been at this family research for more than 30 years. I've worn out alot of pencils and light bulbs in that time, too, not to mention the cases of paper!! Keep searching and good luck to you, Norma > > Thank you ever so much. > > Melville in Tokyo

Freeman is given in the index as Royal OLOVER and he is found on the previous page from Mary -- page 0126, sequence 18207. So, either this Mary J. Freeman is not yours, or she married someone named Royal OLOVER or perhaps OLIVER. There are many misspellings in this WI Marriage index. I have found that sometimes the groom and the bride are listed on seperate pages -- just the way the spacing came our, I presume. But, it seems customary for the groom's name to be put into the marriage record FIRST and the bride's name SECOND, so I have learned to look at the previous page if the groom is missing and the following page if the bride seems to be missing. I have found what I'm looking for nearly every time. Happy hunting and great success to you, Norma

    3. I want to thank everyone for all the help with finding my ancestors marriage dates. I found 4 of them. One had the name spelled so bad that I would have never found it. The other three has the date 1800 instead of 1900. I thought the names were right but the wrong date. I had no idea what the spouse's names were. So by putting in the info from one spouse I found the other every time. Thelma

    1. [GenWisconsin] Marriage Dates pre-1907
    2. If you find a date that doesn't seem right, check the volume number. The volumes are chronological. In Milwaukee County an 1863 date is in volume 1, and an 1899 date is volume 32. When I found an 1833 date listed in volume 16, I knew it was wrong, and yes, it turned out to be 1883. Ditto for 1800, listed as volume 32--obviously that should be 1900. So OK, the list isn't perfect--still, I have found some info that I missed when I was studying the microfilms in person. Blanche Schulz Chicago

Is the only solution to go to the county courthouse or to the > state? Hi Ashley: I had that happen on one of MY dates, too. I carefully analyzed the SEQUENCE numbers. Now most of the time the man's sequence number will be ONE digit ahead of his wife's number -- but... (always an exception, isn't there??) for some of the counties they sort of got "out of sync" if you know what I mean. But if you really ANALYZE the people all married in the SAME county on the SAME day, recorded in the SAME volume on the SAME page, you ought to be able to figure out the pattern of the "sync" numbers (otherwise known as SEQUENCE numbers.) I found that I could then easily figure out which man went with which woman. Now, Ashley, I'm NOT saying this is fool-proof -- only that it worked for me in several instances. I hope it will work for you. If you want to send me your information, I will see what I can do to figure it out for you. But try it for yourself first....you'll be so pleased when you master this thing. Then, last resort -- visit the county or the state and get the actual certificate! Best wishes and never give up. 3. Norma Jean, Thank you so much. An excellent suggestion and most of the days I checked, just 2 people. However 27 July 1895 in Milwaukee County produced 5 women and 5 men, in no particular order, not as pairs and not even alphabetical. 3. I am searching for any information on my gggrandfather, James Wells of NY and WI. He married Marinda Clark in NY about 1853. They had Chauncey M. and Lillie in NY and James in Fond du Lac WI. I found them in the 1860 census for WI. Chauncey was 7, and Lillie was 3. James was 6 mo. the parents were 26 and 23. It was said that he had real estate valued at $1000. I was not able to find the elder James and Marinda again. I found Chauncey in the 1880 census of Walworth County and James in the 1898 directory of Berlin Green Lake County. He and Milford(Chauncey had started using his middle name) were in business together. I would so like to find James and Marinda. Can anyone help? I would be most grateful for any assistance. Sincerely, Jacqueline rae-sack@worldnet.att.net

    3. Just utilized the tip about putting the date and county in the search field. I pulled up the record and found my great-grandfather's name in the marriage record. Then I put the date and the county in the search field and his wife's name came up as Louisa Waeng. Her last name was actually "Huni." So much for spelling! Nancy

    2. What you see is what you get, clicking on Click to view full context does not provide you anything more. However, if you search on the date and the county you may be able to narrow the list down and if you have a first name it can further eliminate people. I used this method and found what I believe was the maiden name of a distant relative. With further digging on that madien name, I was able to confirm my findings.

    3. If you find the groom in the index, you should be able to find the bride by typing in her name. Notice I said "should!" Sometimes one partner is listed and the other is not. My great-grandfather is listed, but his bride is not. This index was derived from records that were handwritten and oftentimes the names have been transcribed incorrectly. To obtain a copy of the marriage record, you can contact the Register of Deeds in the county of the marriage and they will send you a copy of the record. Marriage records costs $7.00. You can also obtain a copy of the record from the Area Research Centers at the various state university campuses. Some of the ARC's will do the work for free and others require various payment amounts. Check the following website about the Area Research Network: www.shsw.wisc.edu/archives/arcnet/index.html The Pre-1907 Birth, Marriage (at present only through Racine County alphabetically), & Death Indices are just that, an index. To obtain the record you must contact either of the above places. Vital events in Wisconsin were not required to be filed until 1916, so consider it a stroke of "good luck" if you can find records in the index. Nancy
