1. [GenWisc] slow loading Wisconsin State Journal
2. Ashley Tiwara
3. If you do not have a DSL connection, this site takes perhaps 15 seconds to load. You have to sit there and wait, while it comes up with the screens you want. 1. [GenWisc] Wisconsin Newspapers (library site)
2. I haven't even tried to really use the site, but with all this commotion on our newsletters, it seems to me that the library system is in desperate need of an overhaul..... Way too many people are having way too much trouble.... Somethings wrong. But that is just my opinon and no one really asked. Iris

1. [GenWisc] Thanks for Wisconsin State Journal-Step by step
2. Judy Groh
3. Thanks Susan for the information. Had no problems following your directions or accessing the site by the direct link you provided. Just found an important obit. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: 05 December, 2002 12:50 PM Subject: Re: [GenWisc] Wisconsin State Journal-Step by step start here http://www.scls.lib.wi.us/ click on the link entitled "Databases: Literature, Magazine, Newspaper, Business Investment, Health & Other" Scroll down to "Connect to WorldCat" BUT DO NOT CLICK ON IT. Scroll down to "From the Internet with LINKcat Web" and I click on http://linkcat.scls.lib.wi.us/linkcatweb, but you may need to click on another selection because of the type of connection you have, I don't know. In the gray box on the left click "Wisc. Newspapers" In the gray box on the left select the newspaper you want to check. I personally would check all of them. I have been surprised at what I have found in each paper because I didn't realize a death in Baraboo might also be reported in Reedsburg's or Madison's paper, too. When you find an article you can write to the city's library. The WI Historical Society has the WI Journal. I just called them and because I live in CA they want $15 to make these copies or I can ILL the microfilm for the same price. You might want to call them. They didn't seem very helpful to me. A bit abrupt in my opinion. 2. I had no problem with the Wis. Journal site. You have to have patience. It is in Java so it takes a little while for it to upload. You will get a blank screen at first. But just hang in there and let it do its thing. It is slo-0-0-0-0w. "M"

1. [GenWisc] family from Thorp (Clark County)
2. I have a 1947 photo of a family from Thorp...7 men and 5 women who are probably brothers and sisters. No surname given, but a list of first names, ages, and where each lived at that time. They probably got together for a family reunion, maybe in Thorp. I hope that someone will recognize this family. I'd love to return this wonderful photo and would be glad to e-mail it for review if you e-mail me directly at [email protected] Thanks. Fred, age 76, Thorp Will, age 70, Thorp Otto, age 66, Thorp George, age 61, Calif Irene, age 56, Calif Josephine, age 63, Calif Henrietta, age 75, Calif Pearl, age 77, Calif Henry, age 68, New York Emma, age 80, New York Oscar, age 65, Minneapolis John, age 73, Minneapolis Clara, age 59, Seattle Thanks. Carol AWE from Waukegan IL ([email protected])

1. [GenWisc] Clark County "unknown" photos
2. I have acquired 3 photo postcards that were given to Gertha AWE of Greenwood previous to 1925 when Gertha moved to Calif (she married John STOWELL and died in 1992 at age 95). I'd appreciate any help to locate descendants of those in the photos so these treasures can be returned (all predate 1925). 1. LILLIAN SIMONS of Owen. Young woman in white dress and large hat standing next to a plain wooden chair. SIMONS is likely her maiden name. 2. META MILLER. Young girl in white dress holding hand of toddler, standing outside in front of small tree. MILLER is likely her maiden name. Photographer: Walter L. Hake of Curtiss. 3. LOTTIE. Two young women in nurses uniforms. No surnames given. Please respond to me directly at [email protected] and I'd be glad to e-mail the photos for review. I'd love to return these treasures. Thanks! Carol AWE from Waukegan IL

2. Susan, Thank you for sharing. I have found some information that I have looking for in 1858. Do you know where to write to get copies of the newspaper articles? You are right about the site being temperamental. It seems like it took forever and going back was also a challenge but I did finally find a lot of old information I had been looking for. Thank you again, Sharon

3. Susan, If we start here http://www.scls.lib.wi.us/ do we then click on the link entitled "Databases: Literature, Magazine, Newspaper, Business Investment, Health & Other"? If we click on that link, the site then asks us for our library card number. Since you said no library card is needed, could you point out what link you are clicking on the main page at http://www.scls.lib.wi.us/ Thanks in advance, Shari

2. Janice, I don't have a library card and I use the site all the time. I think you need a card for the books on line and a few features, but the access to the newspaper index does not require a card. Susan in Northern CA
