Unless one of the early Virginia Gentrys moved north, it appears that my New Jersey ancestors were a distinct minority among 18th century Gentrys: "Yankees!" The earliest was apparently JOHN GENTRY of Cumberland Co., NJ (ca 1730-1785. His grandson, HUDSON GENTRY (1781-1859), moved to Franklin Co. Indiana, before 1820.
