Hello Gentry researchers, I, and many others, have been working on the following family for eons it seems and just can't seem to tie this family to one of the known GENTRY lines of South Carolina . . . maybe someone on the list has a clue that will help. Allen GENTRY, Sr. b. abt. 1792 SC - d. 1848 Taney Co., MO (later Stone Co.) He married in SC to Margaret _______? b. 1797 SC - d. 1872 Stone Co., MO. The Goodspeeds book, "Rem. Hist. of the Ozark Region" on pg. 601-602, in a bio on their son, Allen GENTRY jr., states there were 11 children - 7 boys and 4 girls. Allen Sr. migrated from TN to MO 1836-1837. He is on the 1840 census in Taney Co., MO with only 3 children. 1. Allen GENTRY jr. - b. 1814 SC - d. 1907 Stone Co., MO - m. #1 Sarah Jane ANDERSON, #2 her sister, Martha Ellen ANDERSON, Nancy MARTIN. 2. David GENTRY - b. 1825-1828 TN - d. abt. 1857 Stone Co., MO m. Elizabeth ANDERSON (these Anderson all dau of Samuel Anderson and Mary Mckensie) 3. Elizabeth GENTRY - b. abt. 1832 TN - d. May 1880 Stone Co., MO m. Jabez JONES A check of the Tennessee census for 1830 shows only 2 Allen GENTRY, both living in McMinn Co.,TN. One is called Allen GENTRY Sr. and is 40-50 years old b. 1780-1790 He has 9 children. The other is just Allen GENTRY and is 20-30 b. 1800-1810 and has 3 sons and 1 dau. I believe though that the older man has a son Allen living in his household and so he is referred to as Allen Sr. Checking the early McMinn/Rhea Co. court records, tax lists, etc. shows several more GENTRY living here that NEVER show up on the census there!! So, who were the 2 Allen GENTRY living in McMinn and Rhea Co., TN 1820-1832??? Was one Allen GENTRY who m. Sarah KING in Rhea Co. 1825? I believe he is the one who appears on court records and road building teams there and he probably had a son Allen. He is probably the one who is the older Allen GENTRY Sr. on the 1830 census in McMinn Co. Did he then move to Bledsoe Co. by 1850 census? Was he originally from Hall Co., GA? This man obviously not my Allen Sr. of SW MO. The other Allen GENTRY only had 4 children, so was Goodspeed's book wrong?? . . . or did Allen and Margaret have more children that died before 1840?? If someone can help sort out these Allen GENTRY families in McMinn Co./Rhea Co.,TN it might shed some light on my Allen GENTRY Sr. of SW MO.
