These were on KYROOTS mail list by Cindy Crawford.Posted with her permission It's all Gentry clips. I thought it interesting to see how much or how little it took to get your name in the paper back then.Some are serious, some are funny. These are from the late 1800's. Enjoy! Norma Nov. 24, 1887 -H. C. Gentry has a twin turnip, or twin turnips, the two growing on the same stem, or root, one above the other. Nov. 24, 1897 - Jacob, eight year old son of H. C. GENTRY, of this place while out in the yard playing with his dog, had the animal to run between his legs and throw him to the ground with such violence as to break his collar bone. A physician was called and reset the bone and the little fellow is doing nicely. Dec. 23, 1887 - DAVID GENTRY closed his school last Friday night with an exhibition. Dec. ?, 1887 - A womans Christian Temperance Union was organized here last week instead of a Good Templars lodge. THe following are the officers: President Mrs. Rosalind Nesbitt; Vice President MRS. REBECCA E. GENTRY. Dec. 23, 1887 - THOMAS GENTRY of Maretburg is down with an inflamation of the bowels. Thomas Gentry of Maretburg has weatherboraded and painted his house to pleas his young wife. H. G. GENTRY has the thanks of this office for some gratutious blacksmithing. Dec. 11, 1896 - Mrs W. H. GENTRY, daughter of ? O. Cable, died at her home near Brodhead on Friday night, Dec. 4. She leaves a host of friends and relatives who mourn the loss of a friend and sister who could excell in kindness.
