I believe this is going to be the correct cemetery. The record of Death and Intrerment state: Name: John Gentry # and Locality of the grave: 14343 City Cemetery Hospital # of deceased: 19449 Cumberland Genl Regiment, rank & company: Private-Co B-10' Tenn Cavl Residence before enlistment: Bridgeport Hamilton Co Tenn Conjugal condition (and if married): Married Cause of Death: Chronic Diarrhoea Age: 37 Years Nativity: Tenn Reference & remarks: Mrs Ellen Gentry (wife, Bridgeport, Hamilton Co. Tenn Date of death and burial: August 27' 1856 Duplicates sent to the Adjutant General of the United States Army, and to the Sexton of the Cemetery. Page 2 is the same except it states that a duplicate remains at this Hospital and: To: Brig genl L Thomas Ascpt genl USA Sir: It becomes my duty to inform you that the person above described died at thes Hospitas as herein stated; and that his remains should be interred eith the usual military honors. Respectfully, B Clow/Surgeon U. S. Vol (may not be correct spelling) Military Hospital, Cummberland USA genl. (A duplicate of thes record remains at this Hospital) If the gates to the City Cemetery are locked, some one has to have a key, and who ever these people are, would also have a list of the people buried there. The old sexton records may be on file somewhere. Can any one tell me: Is there a Historical Society in Chattanooga, that might have copies of the records? Or perhaps the city of Chattanooga. Are the cemetery records for Hamilton Co. Tn. on line anywhere? I think the little place called Bridgeport in 1865 has been wiped out by the expansion of Chattanooga. Thanks so much. Vetta is out of town, so I am replying for her. Kathleen Georgia wrote--- I'm from Chattanooga but I don't know of a Bridgeport, TN there. There is Bridgeport, ALA I believe that's Jackson County. There is an old City Cemetery in downtown Chattanooga. It is locked and I was told was only available with an appointment. I don't live in Chattanooga now and I've never been to the cemetery. I do plan to check on it the next time I'm back in town. Hope this helps, Georgia Mathis Cummons Jacksonville, FL On Wed, 17 Jun 98 15:23:57 PDT [email protected] (KATHLEEN O'KELLEY) writes: >Looking for records on the John Gentry family in Bridgeport, Hamilton >Co.
