Battey & Co., 1883) p. 440: CLARKSON L. CATE, son of John and Rachel (Pierce) Cate, was born in Wayne County, Ind., December 31, 1853; his parents were natives of Tennessee, and came to Howard County in October, 1854; his father located in Jackson Township, purchased a farm in its native state, and began, with the assistance of his sons, to clear the land. Clarkson commenced teaching school in 1872, and has engaged in this occupation ever since. He made his start by farming, and the fall of 1877 purchased his first piece of land. He has since added two other tracts and now owns 120 acres of good farm land, on which he has built a fine house, in which he resides. Mr. Cates' youthful experience at home in clearing and cultivating the farm has been greatly advantageous to him; he has taught seven terms in the schoolhouse where he received his education, and has been elected Township Assessor for three terms in succession. He was married, in 1877, to Miss Mary Alice Gentry. They have had two children, Nora and Maud (deceased October 5, 1880). Mr. Cate had three brothers in the late war, the eldest of whom was shot in the head and killed while with Gen. Sherman. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- GENTRY, Jonathan R. Mr Jefferson for more than a century was prominent in the business circles of Cadiz and Trigg county. Mr Jefferson was 84 years of age. Next week this publication will carry the complete obituary of this well known man. Funeral Services Held For John J Jefferson Here Friday Was Leading Figure in Church, Civic and Business Activities in Trigg County For Many Years John James JEFFERSON after three weeks of critical illness passed away last Thursday morning at 6:15 a.m. at the Magraw Clinic. Heart trouble was the contributing cause of his demise, an ailment he had suffered for many years. Mr Jefferson was born on April 18 1859 in Wallonia, Ky and was the son of Peterfield and Amoret BINGHAM JEFFERSON. He was a member of the famous family which gave to Americans the 3rd President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson. Mr Jefferson had been actively engaged in the mercantile business for more than 60 years and was well know throughout the western part of Kentucky. Last May he retired from business and sold his interest in the Jefferson Street firm to Mr E.R. Street his partner. His death closed a remarkable career in business annals of the county, for way back in 1882 Mr Jefferson, a young man of 23 entered the firm of John L. Street and Sons as a clerk. He rose rapidly as the years passed and during his service with the company it progressed and succeeded remarkably. Intensely interested in Masonry, Mr Jefferson was outstanding in the lodges activities. He was a member of the Cadiz Lodge 121 and was the grand Worthy Patron of the Ophelia Chapter of the Easter Star for many years, and was intensely interested in the organizations work. Next to his church, he held Masonry and its ideals, highest in his heart and deeds for he lived and acted his Masonic beliefs to the letter. Sincere loyalty and devotion to his church, was probably his outstanding characteristic for he was known and loved throughout the Louisville Methodist Conference for his diligent service and devotion to his church the Cadiz Methodist Church of which he was a lifetime member. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Chappell of Chappell Hill, Texas in 1890 and to this union was born one daughter. His wife preceded him to the grave several years ago. Because of his tolerance and good judgment his love of fellow man his inherent trail to calmly think things thru to a logical conclusion and his knowledge, he was without a doubt the best beloved man in the county, for it was to him that everyone rich and poor, relative or friend came for advise and consolation when it was needed. His life was an example that Trigg contians can hold up to their sons and their sons, for everyone who knew him was the better for his acquaintance. Funeral services were conducted from Mr Jefferson's home at 3:00 o'clock Friday afternoon, March 17. Services were conducted by his pastor, Rev T.C. Morrison, assisted by two former pastors, Rev E.M. Kellor now of Irvington, Ky and Rev. E.R. Noland now of Marion, Ky. Burial was made at East End Cemetery by the side of his beloved wife. During the service, Mrs E.T. McCarty and Mrs P.A. Blane who had been closely associated with Mr Jefferson in the Methodist Church Choir, sang one of his favorite hymns, "Close to Thee" Mrs Karle Glenn accompanies Mrs McCarty and Mrs Blane.
