Phil, this is just a thought that came to mind when reading your query. I wonder if Mary Jane could have been the illegitimate daughter of one of the older Gentry daughters. Maybe they were raising her and thus she was called Gentry even though her father may have had a different name. Of course I'm only guessing. Would the ages of the children fit this supposition?
