The stream was named for Raleigh Gentry, who settled in the area in the 1850's. Hi Raleigh Gentry is my Grandfather's Great Grandfather. I have noted this discrepancy in the spelling for years but my Grandfather used this spelling. It has been quite a mystery and have never been able to prove the other spellings are correct. I know that census takers could have spelled the name wrong and our traditional spelling could be wrong but I tend to think Raleigh is right and we just haven't made the right connection yet. This has been a difficult journey. The Raleigh spelling is also used in the book "It Occurred in Kimble". She has always believed the correct spelling was Raleigh. Also, mother's cousin, Paul Gould was raised in a home which included Grandma Berry and Grandma (Ann Nichols) Gentry, he paid for and had the markers placed at Gentry Creek Cemetary and at Grit Cemetary. They always had this spelling. Paul is still living also. I have several pictures of both cemetaries if you are interested. Not really any help, just some family history and tradition.
