1. [Gentry] Revolutionary War Pension Records
2. Dear Gentry searchers, After much mucking around on the Family History Library Catalog (FHLC) at www.familysearch.org, I found the *probable* film number for the Rev War pension record for Meshack Gentry. (Do you think it is cataloged under Revolutionary War pensions? Wrong!) I say *probable* film number because Gentry's name, if he did get a pension, falls between the surnames of Geesler (John) and Geohegan (Anthony). The film number you want for Gentry is *probably* 971061. It will cost you in the neighborhood of about $3.00 plus some probable shipping charges, etc. to borrow the film from Salt Lake City for about three weeks through your LDS center--and a few public libraries which have agreements with Salt Lake City. It takes weeks for some of these films to get to your LDS center, but the wait is probably cheaper than ordering a costly pension record from NARA (National Archives). You may still want to order the record from NARA, but do a preview first. Be mindful that there are nearly 3,000 reels of film pertaining to the Rev War pension records of servicemen and their widows, an act passed by Congress ca 1832. There were other pension acts, but I assume the pension you are referring to for Gentry is under the act of 1832. Now--if you are near an LDS center, telephone and found out the days and hours of opening. Call the church on a Sunday, when someone is probably around to answer the phone, if you don't get an answer on a weekday. If it is a widow's pension, there is LOTS of genealogical information in the pension record. And you will want to acquire the pension in that case. If you want to view the online FHL catalog for these pension records, use this topic: United States, Veterans Administration And be patient--the list is long for nearly 3,000 reels of film. (Don't print out the list, unless you have a ream of paper.) For those of you near large libraries, city or county or State or University, try to find an online catalog for any or all those libraries, and call up the author Virgil D. White. Mr. White loves to compile indexes of all kinds of US military pensions, and if you see his books on shelves at your library, you certainly want to take a look. I had a missing German ancestor, whom, rumor had it, was in the US Army and floated around the country, apparently abandoning wife and four children. I picked up one of Virgil D. White's indexes of Old War pension claims, and found two men by that surname. At that time, the photocopies from NARA were less expensive, and I ordered both of the pensions. Lo, and behold, one of them was my missing ancestor, who had joined the US Army ca 1852 in New Orleans (Army register on film). And the pension file was full of information--divorce from first wife, death certificate for first wife, affidavit of second husband of first wife, etc. A gold mine!!! But, there are NO guarantees in genealogy. You may not be so lucky! Happy hunting! E.W.Wallace interested in the Gentrys and Harrises of Albemarle Co., VA & Madison Co., KY

3. Hi Jennifer! Meshack is my ancestor, too. He's my 4th great grandfather. I don't have his pension record, but have seen references to it. I would be interested if you find a copy. How do you descend from Meshack? Meg Gentry Bookout BOOTSYBUD@aol.com wrote: > Meshack Gentry is my 5th great grandfather. Is there anyone who has a copy of > his pension file. He was in Monroe. Co. 3. My Gentry's are from Salem, Cumberland, & Gloucester Co's, NJ. And, so far, are NOT related to the southern families,(NC,SC,VA etc)or any other Gentry line. I've tried for years to connect to the 1909 book without luck. William & Thomas Gentry of NJ were mentioned, but not connected. I (at this time) think that my (NJ) Gentry's are German not English. I read that William (below)had brothers Moses, Ebenezer, 2 others & some sisters. I haven't found anything out about Moses, Ebenezer or the other siblings so I check all leads. As of 11/20/02, Moses Gentry, of Cumberland Co., NJ, Letters of administration granted by Joseph Moore, Surrogate, on 6 Dec 1854, to William Gentry. There is also mention of a Moses Gentry serving in the war of 1812. WILLIAM GENTRY & MARGARET HECTOR were married in Salem Co., NJ, 8 Dec 1803. 2. I cannot locate your Gentry-Dollar (or vice versa) family. However, recently I was told about the search engine www.google.com as a useful tool for genealogy. Put the name "James Dollar" or whatever name in quotation marks, and perhaps you will find a genealogy-linked URL to help you find some fellow (or girl) searchers. Sometimes you strike out--I put in the name of a person I was searching and found a like-named person was on Death Row. And you will find several living persons by that name, perhaps. However, by quickly searching not only the headline but also the URL, you can determine whether it is genealogy-linked. James Dollar brought up ten screens of hits. Needless to say, I did not scan them all. I have too much uncompleted genealogy myself. How about a search for Lumpkin Dollar? E.W.Wallace

3. My father, Eldred Gentry, Sr., served in the Navy in WWI. He was an Aviation Machinist Mate, 1st Class, stationed at Pensacola, FL. He was orphaned at one year of age, but later learned his family was from Boonville, Warrick County, Indiana. There are also many Gentrys from a neighbouring county, Spencer County. I don't see many references to the Indiana Gentrys in the messages at this address. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has any knowledge about them. I have a small amount of information, but I am new at genealogy. Eldred Gentry, Jr.

3. My father (Ernest Clifton Shelton) is not a Gentry, my mother is, but I am so proud of him and wanted to share. He served in WWll as an engineer after working in the CCC for a few years. He was in England for two years, then joined the Normandy invasion on D-4. He marched through Paris and on to Liege, Belgium where he joined Patton's third army. He took pictures the entire length of his service and we have a wonderful pictorial documentation of the European phase of the war from protecting England, the Normandy invasion, marching through Germany and even a picture of Patton telling the men that the war was over. I have managed to document the date and place of that because it was the one time that Patton did not wear his pearl handled pistols according to Pattons own diary. The last picture my father took was on the ship looking over the men's heads as they looked toward the Statue of Liberty, it still makes me cry. On this day in 1944 my Granny Shelton was praying that my Dad, another son General, a prisoner of Bataan, and another son Louis, in the Pacific on a ship, would all be home for Thanksgiving. They made it. Thanks for letting me share. Debra Lisenbee daughter of Alice Gentry Shelton, daughter of George Franklin Gentry, son of John William Gentry, son of William Gentry who died in the Civil War (also stepson of Bate Barry a great war hero of Texas) grandson of Raleigh (Rolly) of Mason County Texas.
