New delimma, Allen GENTRY b 7 May 1820 Surry Co., NC married Mahala SOUTHARD in Surry Co., NC One researcher tells me that Allen GENTRY was son of another Allen GENTRY. Another researcher shows that Allen GENTRY was son of Joseph GENTRY and Mary HODGES. Neither offered documentation. Has anyone else researched this person? If so, what did you find? I really am looking for the parents of Sarah GENTRY b: Feb 1824 Surry Co., NC. I believe Allen GENTRY to be a possible sibling of Sarah's as they both married SOUTHARD's about the same time. Any little tidbit will help in my search. Sammie Leap
I'm searching for information on my great grandmother, Mary Ann GENTRY. She was born August 27, 1841 in MO, d. July 20, 1917 in Moore, OK. She is buried in Norman, OK at Blackburn Cemetery. She married David WADE, born in VA. Two of their children were Lula V. WADE and Bird Gentry WADE. Both born in MO. I have more information if they sound familiar to anyone. Also, I received an email from another GENTRY researcher, Joyce Underwood Reams, but have been unable to contact them. The mail comes back undeliverable. Joyce please get back to me, I would love to have the information you offered to share. Thanks, Shirley Anderson [email protected]

Hi Pam- There is ANOTHER Allen Gentry in the 1830 TN census-Allen D. Gentry, of Monroe County. Allen D. was b abt 1791 in VA, the s/o Meshack Gentry. Allen D. was married 1st to Nancy Gentry (his cousin) and 2nd to Susan Ivey. He had 9 ch with Nancy between 1810 and 1834-Pleasant, David, James Riley, John A., Nancy V., Benjamin Franklin, Mary W.,Sarah Margaret, and Malinda Jane. He had 4 ch with Susan between 1838 and 1845-Emeline, Wm.H.H., Pinkney Burton (my great great grandfather), and Arabecca. Allen D. Gentry lived in Monroe County TN after 1810, and died there 18 Aug 1853. To the best of my knowledge, my TN Gentrys are not linked to the SC Gentrys. My line seems to have travelled from VA>NC>TN. Wish I could help you with YOUR Allen! Hi Meg, Thanks for the reminder, I did forget about that rascal Allen D. GENTRY over there in Monroe Co., TN. I've always known who he was. Son of Meshak GENTRY, right? I checked out all those lines in "The Gentry Family in America" 1909 book by Richard Gentry. One time I was in the main library in Madisonville, TN where a very helpful library assistant found a folder on Allen D. Gentry. Quite a guy. Read Monroe Co., TN Chancery Court records for 1854 - file #524. Pamela Geisler Smith Gresham, OR
Hello Gentry researchers, I, and many others, have been working on the following family for eons it seems and just can't seem to tie this family to one of the known GENTRY lines of South Carolina . . . maybe someone on the list has a clue that will help. Allen GENTRY, Sr. b. abt. 1792 SC - d. 1848 Taney Co., MO (later Stone Co.) He married in SC to Margaret _______? b. 1797 SC - d. 1872 Stone Co., MO. The Goodspeeds book, "Rem. Hist. of the Ozark Region" on pg. 601-602, in a bio on their son, Allen GENTRY jr., states there were 11 children - 7 boys and 4 girls. Allen Sr. migrated from TN to MO 1836-1837. He is on the 1840 census in Taney Co., MO with only 3 children. 1. Allen GENTRY jr. - b. 1814 SC - d. 1907 Stone Co., MO - m. #1 Sarah Jane ANDERSON, #2 her sister, Martha Ellen ANDERSON, Nancy MARTIN. 2. David GENTRY - b. 1825-1828 TN - d. abt. 1857 Stone Co., MO m. Elizabeth ANDERSON (these Anderson all dau of Samuel Anderson and Mary Mckensie) 3. Elizabeth GENTRY - b. abt. 1832 TN - d. May 1880 Stone Co., MO m. Jabez JONES A check of the Tennessee census for 1830 shows only 2 Allen GENTRY, both living in McMinn Co.,TN. One is called Allen GENTRY Sr. and is 40-50 years old b. 1780-1790 He has 9 children. The other is just Allen GENTRY and is 20-30 b. 1800-1810 and has 3 sons and 1 dau. I believe though that the older man has a son Allen living in his household and so he is referred to as Allen Sr. Checking the early McMinn/Rhea Co. court records, tax lists, etc. shows several more GENTRY living here that NEVER show up on the census there!! So, who were the 2 Allen GENTRY living in McMinn and Rhea Co., TN 1820-1832??? Was one Allen GENTRY who m. Sarah KING in Rhea Co. 1825? I believe he is the one who appears on court records and road building teams there and he probably had a son Allen. He is probably the one who is the older Allen GENTRY Sr. on the 1830 census in McMinn Co. Did he then move to Bledsoe Co. by 1850 census? Was he originally from Hall Co., GA? This man obviously not my Allen Sr. of SW MO. The other Allen GENTRY only had 4 children, so was Goodspeed's book wrong?? . . . or did Allen and Margaret have more children that died before 1840?? If someone can help sort out these Allen GENTRY families in McMinn Co./Rhea Co.,TN it might shed some light on my Allen GENTRY Sr. of SW MO. If anyone is interested in the other GENTRY on the Tax Lists 1820-1832 of McMinn/Rhea I would be glad to type and post to the list. Pamela Geisler Smith Gresham, OR

I have an Atlas Pinkney "Pink" Gentry, b. 1858 in Union Co MS (very north MS, almost TN). He's a brother to *my* great grandfather, Dunbar Fanning Gentry, son of Levi F. Gentry and Elizabeth Jane Hunter. I have some unsupported research from another person with Levi's parentage, but I'm still in the process of checking it out.
