Looking for information on family of: Jesse GENTRY (ca1757-VA/ca1834-TN) who married Sarah -?- (1775/1855-TN). Jesse's parents were Robert and Judith (Joyner) GENTRY of Hanover Co.,VA and Jefferson Co.,TN.
Meg, I found my Shedrick Gentry pages - which I did not include with the other Bea Yates material I sent, because it was "misplaced" :-/. This guy has been a mystery and maybe someone else can place him in a known Gentry group. I am interested in him because he shows up on the 1829-1830 McMinn Co.TN tax lists with the Allen Gentry I am working on and I have always wondered where he fits. His name probably Shadrack, but seems to be called Shedrick, so it's easy to find him and I refer to him that way to separate him from the others of that name. Here is what I have on him. . . I went to the Nodaway County MO webpage, and found the 1850 census, all transcribed! The page below lists the GENTRY family, and in the household next door, the BRITTAIN family. This is Allen and Sally (BRITTAIN) GENTRY and I am assuming her brother's family next door. Thanks again Norma, for the info that steered me in this direction. Would those of you who have the tradition of Nicholas Gentry being married to Lucy Cornelious please share with the rest of us your source for this information? Also, I would like to make a comment on the Essex/Sussex tradition as to the Gentry family origin in England. I have researched in England on 5 different occasions. I have never yet found any 17th century mention of a Gentry in Sussex. I think the author of the Gentry book meant to say Suffolk, not Sussex. I did find many Gentrys in both counties in the 17th century, but never found the given name Nicholas. Emma Gene Gentry -- Emma Gene (Seale) Gentry <[email protected]> Austin, Texas
Hi Vida and list Thank you Vida for that very interesting information. You guys are miles and miles ahead of me - I have a lot of apparently very interesting reading to do. [email protected] was kind enough to send me a list of back volumes and addresses for Gentry Family Gazette and Genealogy Newsletter. The information I have I received in e-mail and don't know if the source was Richard Gentry's THE GENTRY FAMILY IN AMERICA or something else: From: Gary Flesher [[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, September 27, 1998 2:03 PM To: Morris Ryan Subject: RE: Nicholas GENTRY I Here is something on Nicholas I, that I recieved from Bobbye PHILLIPS....Virginia Nicholas GENTRY (I)was born 1657 in Essex/Sussex Co., England. He served in the military between DEC 3 1676 and 1683 as a British (Redcoat)soldier in the Bacon Rebellion During the period of the Roundhead Parliament under Oliver Cromwell, no new governors were sent to the Virginia colony. The people elected their own government and exercised rights of universal suffrage. They became accustomed to having equality as British subjects and enjoyed self-government. After the Restoration, King Charles II sent Lord Berkley to Virginia to restore the authority of the throne. Berkley was a tyrant and imposed harsh taxes and restrictions on commerce. Self-government was abolished. The people were aroused by the deprivation of their liberty, and in 1676 they rallied behind Nathaniel Bacon to overthrow the oppressive Berkley regime. This time to prevent Berkley's return, the burned Jamestown to the ground. The colonist enjoyed liberty for a short period under Bacon's leadership, but the man was taken ill and died. The colonist could find no one to replace him and Berkley once again regained control. He instituted vengeful reprisals against the rebels, hanging 22 of their leaders. King Charles recalled Berkley and replaced him with Lord Culpepper, who was as venal as Berkley. King Charles recalled Culpepper and declared Virginia a royal province. Nathaniel Bacon ( 1647 - 1676 ) was a Virginia colonial reformer and soldier who led " Bacon's Rebellion " in 1676. Dissatisfied with Governor Sir William Berkley's failure to protect the border population against Indian raids, Bacon led a successful expedition against them without the Governor's authorization. The Governor condemned the action and subsequent negotiations with Bacon, whose aim for reform of the colonial system of law, failed to bring a peaceful settlement. At the age of 19, Nicholas Gentry, a British soldier ( Redcoat ), set sail for the American colonies. He boarded either the " Rose " or the " Dartmouth" on 12/3/1676. He and his brother Samuel, being two of 1,130 men sent by the king to quell the " Bacon Rebellion " When the ships arrived in America, 2/11/1677, Nathaniel Bacon was dead and the rebellion over. Nicholas and Samuel were stationed at Mattapony Garrison and remained in service of the British throne for another 6 years before being paid and mustered out of the army of King Charles. They were in Jamestown, Virginia in the fall of 1683. He resided New Kent Co., Virginia in 1684 in Virginia. 10/21/1684 Land Books of the Colony of Virginia lists a patent of land in favor of Samuel Gentry and describes as being situated in New Kent County, adjacent to the lands of Nicholas Gentry. Nicholas I was appointed Road Overseer on JAN 8 1709 in New Kent Co., Virginia. He died in 1736 in Hanover Co., Virginia. He was given a in 1736 in Hanover/New Kent Co., Virginia. In 1736 Nicholas was registered a land grant of 400 acres in Hanover or New Kent county, Virginia. Hanover County was cut from the western part of New Kent County in 1720, and St. Paul's Parish was in that part of New Kent which was made Hanover County, Virginia. In 1742 Louisa County was created from the part of Hanover County where the Gentry homestead was located. Nicholas Gentry I " There is a tradition in the Gentry family that the first Gentry's to settle in America were two young men, brothers, who came from England as British soldiers and settled in Virginia in about 1677. In support of this tradition, we find that the first Gentry's to settle in America were Nicholas and Samuel Gentry, who entered land in New Kent County, Virginia in 1684. A further fact tends to confirm this tradition; that British soldiers sent over to Virginia by King Charles II, with commissiners to Virginia at the time of the Bacon Rebellion in January,1677, were not paid off and discharged until the fall of 1683, and many of them remained and settled in Virginia. " ' Mr. Charles W. Gentry of Harrodsburg, Kentucky, now deceased, said that he often heard his father, Richard Gentry, a Revolutionary War soldier, boast of his English blood, and at the same time speak of his first American ancestor and his brother as " Two old Red Coats". ' " Some of the earliest authentic records that have been found of the Gentry's in America are St. Peter's Parish of New Kent County, Virginia and in old land books of Virginia which contain the records of the early land grants. " A search has not been made in England to trace the ancestors of the American Gentry's; a cursory examination seems to indicate that the name of Gentry is a local one in England and occurs mainly in Essex and Sussex Counties as far back as the middle of the 16th century The Vestry of the Parish before the Revolutionary War acted in the capacity of our County Courts. They, in addition to handling spiritual affairs, supervised land boundary disputes, saw to the poor, the roads and etc. St. Peter's Parish Vestry book has Nicholas Gentry's name mentioned on a number of occasions. 1689 Nicholas Gentry was one called to ' remark ye bounds of each man's land'. ( review land boundaries.) 1701 Nicholas Gentry was paid for having helped with the clothes and funeral charges of Mable Wood. 1709 Nicholas Gentry appointed Overseer in keeping roads in order. 1709 Complaint lodged by Nicholas Gentry There are entries about local business for the years 1723, 1734,1735,1739, 1743, 1755, 1759, 1763 and 1767. " St. Peter's Register lists three children born to Nicholas. They were Nicholas II Elizabeth and Mable. Old land books of Virginia speak of Nicholas owning land in 1684 near Totopotomoy's Creek. In 1736 Nicholas was registered a land grant of 400 acres in Hanover or New Kent county, Virginia. St. Peter's Registar lists three children born to Nicholas. They were Nicholas II Elizabeth and Mable. Old land books of Virginia speak of Nicholas owning land in 1684 near Totopotomoy's Creek. In 1736 Nicholas was registered a land grant of 400 acres in Hanover or New Kent county, Virginia. There seems to be no record as to the name of his wife. He was married to Lucy CORNELIUS about 1684. Lucy CORNELIUS was born between 1660 and 1674. Nicholas GENTRY (I) and Lucy CORNELIUS had the following children: +4 i. Joseph GENTRY,b. 1685,m. Agness ? +5 ii. Elizabeth GENTRY, b.1687 m. James Haggard +6 iii. Nicholas GENTRY II b. 1697 m. 1 Mary Brooks 2. Jane Brown / Austill? ( my line) +7 iv. Mable GENTRY, b.1702 m. James Haggard +8 v. Samuel GENTRY, b. 1704 m. Ann 9 vi. James GENTRY was born in 1706 in New Kent Co., Virginia. +10 vii. David GENTRY.b.1708 m. Sarah Brooks ( Parent's of Nicholas killed at Fort Nashboro, TN.) Does anyone know if the dob's of Elizabeth & Nicholas are correct? I wonder why we have a 10 year difference when the first 2 were so close, then a 10 yr span to the last 5 and they all seem to be 2 yrs. apart.? Is there maybe a possiblity of 2 families here? I show one marriage to Lucy Cornelus. Also I have that Samuel Gentry b.cir. 1630-35 Eng. m.1650 Eng., Margaret Draper b. abt 1635 as a possibility for Nichlas & Samuel's parents. Hello Sara, I have NC census info for George and Elendor (Nellie) GENTRY and their children for 1850 and 1860, and for some of the children for 1870 and 1880. George is the son of Elias and Mary Ann GENTRY. They had three known children (Sarah, George, and William), and one possible child (Thomas). Their daughter, Sarah, is my GGG-Grandmother. Would be happy to trade my early family info for your later info on William and his family. I look forward to hearing from you, Sally T. BAUGHN [email protected]

Hi to Morris and the list, If your information came form Richard Gentry's THE GENTRY FAMILY IN AMERICA, the part about Nicholas and Samuel being redcoats have been proven to be suspect. The latest opinion is that Nicholas was an indentured servant or apprentice sent to guard the Micanopy Garrison in place of his master. If Samuel was with Nicholas in guarding the garrison, he apparently was later able to accumulate the money as a soldier or after his discharge to pay for the transportation of others to the colony. (See below) Danny Ellerman in his article pub. in the Gentry Family Gazette and Genealogy Newsletter, p. 58 issue 16. states that a land patent of George Alves indicates that Nicholas Gentry was transported to the colonies by Alves and not as a British soldier. George Alves granted 1014 acres in New Kent Co., Sst. Peters Parish, on both sides of Totopotomays Creek, 24 Apr 1700, p. 268, for transportation of (21 persons, among whom is to found Nicholas Gentry, George Alves and an Alice Alves). This kind of grant was called a headright grant. Some colonies, in order to attract settlers, granted land to those who paid the passage fare for someone to come to the colony from the mother country. One man would pay the passage for several persons (often hid indentured servants) and would be granted a certain amount of land (usually 50 acres) per head. ......This grant was made long after the transportation took place which was not unusual or it could have been a reconfirmation of an earlier grant for which no record is now and perhaps then available. In Samuel's case he owned the 300 acres he took out in a grant in 1684 for only a short time. It seems that soon after he received the grant (a headright grant for transporting 6 persons to the colony) He sold the land patent to David Crawford. He apparently continued to live in St. Peter's Parish after he sold the land. His son Peter was baptised there on April 10, 1687. There is no record of Samuel afterthat. He is thought by some researchers to have either returned with his son to England or both died early. Having had the money to buy passage for 6 people it is quite probable that he arrived in this county not as an indentured servant or a soldier but on his own. Most likely Nicholas I and Samuel were related. Samuel and Nicholas Gentry had adjacent lands indicating that they were related. Samuell Gentrey, 300 acres, New Kent Co., S. side of York River; Betw. brs. of same and bes. of Tottapottamoys Cr., 21 Oct. 1684, p. 405 (of Patent Book 7) Adj. Col. Hi A part of Jeff Weaver's Upper New River Valley page, has Dr. Aras B. Cox's "Footprints on the Sands of Time" reprinted. http://www.ls.net/~newriver/nrv/foot.htm The chapters on Allegheny and Ashe Co. NC have numerous mentions of the Gentry family and mariages. Be prepared to read a lot! It's very interesting. The rest of Jeff's pages have information that will take a week to go through. Gentry in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars I, being both curious and inquisitive, am looking for stories and sources of information concerning the Gentry family in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. The little bit I have learned: Nicholas, I and his brother Samuel were both British Red-coats, sent over by King Charles to quell the Bacon uprising in VA. GEORGE GENTRY ALBEMARLE COUNTY PRIVATE VIRGINIA MILITIA, JAMES GENTRY ALBEMARLE COUNTY CAPTAIN OF ARTILLERY VIRGINIA, WILLIAM GENTRY HANOVER COUNTY PRIVATE VIRGINIA all fought on the Yankee side of the war. 1864, William S. Gentry and two of his sons, John N. and Stephen M., were taken prisoner by rebel soldiers, at their farm on the Hanging Dog Creek ... tied to a mulberry tree and shot to death. http://www.flex.net/users/golden/nc-state/cherokee/gentry.htm Where can a person find more information (Web and other) on Gentry family members involved in these wars? My great grandfather, William M. Gentry, served as a private, Co. C, 2nd Regiment, North Carolina Volunteer Infantry (Union), according to his tombstone. My mother's family has his discharge papers, but I have not seen them. I do know that they were a source of great embarrassment to my uncle when he was a little boy in a small Tennessee town. He wanted to take them to school until he found out that his grandfather was not a Confederate! (The small town was Franklin, site of one of the Civil War's bloodiest albeit indecisive battles.) I have had scant luck tracing this Gentry family. William was born in 1842 in Marshall, Madison Co., NC, although I believe that Madison Co. had not actually been formed yet. According to his death certificate, his parents were George Gentry, born TN, and Nellie ?, born ?. However, in 1880 William reported both his parents as being born in NC. William died in Asheville, Buncombe County, NC on Jan. 18, 1926. He may have had a sister named Ruth. He married Mary Margaret "Polly" Brooks, a widow, maiden name Baley, mother Elizabeth ?, father ? Baley, on Feb. 11, 1866, in Madison Co. I have been able to find this family only in the 1880 Census but not earlier, and the TN State Library and Archives does not have NC censuses after 1880. Although my family and his death certificate indicate his middle initial was "M.", he is shown in the 1880 census as "W. R. Gentery." William and Polly's children were Wyatt, born abt. 1872; Jefferson, born abt. 1873; my grandfather Zebulon Beard, born 1875; Christopher Columbus (also shown as Crisley), born abt. 1877; Emma, born after 1880; Henry, born after 1880 or possibly the same person as Jefferson above; and Jessie May, dates unknown, died in early childhood. Polly also had two children from a previous marriage. A son, James R. Brooks, b. abt 1863, is shown with them in the 1880 Madison Co. census. Also listed in the 1880 census with William's family were Molley Gentry, 8, a niece, another Crisley Gentry, 18, no relationship shown, and C. Seigs, 17, no relationship shown. Not only can I not find this Gentry family in any other census, I cannot find the correct Baley or Brooks family. Any help appreciated. Sara Binkley Tarpley
