Janet, Sorry for the delay in responding to your 11-4 query. My husband is another of the descendants of Tyree Gentry. He belongs to Mildred Clark Gentry that married James Ward. They had a son James F. Ward. We have never noted a middle initial for the elder James in any of his papers. The township is called Antoine. Mildred's middle name is said to be from her mother's family, but I have no documentation. One of William Gentry's sons was named Richard Clark Gentry, which is recorded in a Bible record. I have noted a Tyree Gentry in Lawrence County AR Territory in 1820, a James Ward is there also. (Morgan's Reconstructed 1820 Census) Tyree is listed at least twice more in Lawrence County on Tax lists, one in the late1830's. It might be helpful to see if this Tyree owned property there, if it is the same man, might indicate relatives there. MARTHA PATTY GENTRY m WILLIAM SALYERS, according to World Family Tree #12: William Salyers died 7 Aug 1849 in Saline County AR. Record of this should be in Will Book A-1 p. 140. Children: William J., Washington, Milla Jane, Derinda, Cordelia, Sarah Ann P., Samuel, King P., WFT has all the children born in Saline County but I know from court records that William Salyers was still in Clark County AR through at least 1833, so at least the 1st 3 children were born there. He and WILLIAM CORNELIUS (another of my husband's direct line groups in Clark County AR) must have filed charges against each other--the record is the State v William Cornelius and the State v William Saliers alias Salyers. I am looking for one J. Gentry who was in his early 20s in 1948 and lived in or around Deland, or Orange, Florida. He was a cab driver. His first name was either Jeff or Jessie E. Is there anyone out there that recognizes this person on their family tree?
Still trying to reconcile John C. "Jackson" Gentry, b. abt 1836. I have been through every 1850 Gentry census record from AL and GA. He died in 1862 (Civil War) but was listed in 1860 census from Newton Co., MS. I did find the following, all from 1850 census. Carroll Co., GA Richard Gentry, 44, blacksmith, b. SC Margarett, 34, GA John?, 17, GA Mary, 10, GA Phebe, 6, GA Jas? , 4, GA Permelia, 1, GA _______________________________________________________________ Cass Co., GA Jeremiah, 48, SC Sarah, 49, SC Allen, 22, GA Pinkney, 16, GA John, 13, GA Samuel, 12, GA William, 10, GA Elizabeth, 3, GA Mary, 1, GA ________________________________________________________________________ Paulding Co., GA John Gentry, 35, TN Jane, 35, TN Mary Ann, 17, GA John, 15, GA Elizia, 13, GA Jefferson, 11, GA Tass?, 9, GA Merrill, 7, GA Sarah E., 1, GA __________________________________________________________________________ If any of these John Gentry's ring a bell, please let me know. Will help narrow my search. And I hope that some of this will help you, too. Bill Gentry
I am not a history buff, but in the search for my Allen Gentry b. 1792 SC I find that studying the history of an area really helps to understand the why- when-where our people went. Since I was typing this all out to try and make sense of it, I thought I would share it. In 1790 - 1800 census the Georgia Territory stretched from S.C. to the Mississippi River. A narrow southern strip of what became AL and MS was claimed by both the U.S. and Spain. In 1800 census this was the Mississippi Territory. Not until the 1810 census was Georgia defined as a state. AL and MS were known as MS territory. A large portion of this land was Indian land and I think some of these pioneers in order to avoid the area went up and around through Tennessee and consequently appear there breifly or some of their children show that as a birthplace. It is hard to imagine these families moving in this territory as early as 1810-1820, but they did. In my search for information on the early GENTRY who moved out of SC into Georgia I found on the Jackson Co.,GA website, hosted by Sheila Forester, a wonderful history of the formation of that county from parent Franklin Co. in 1796. This information shows the other counties that formed out of Jackson and I then realized that . . 1. Jackson Co. court records for Cain and John Gentry dated 1796 . . . these men were probably already living there and previous records of them would be in Franklin Co. records! Jackson Co. records BEGAN in 1796. 2. Elisha, Elijah Gentry (prob sons of David & Sarah Brooks Gentry) appear early in Wilkes Co. (next to Jackson) which was an original Co. formed 1777. Elisha later lived Clarke Co. which was formed from Jackson in 1801, so had not moved. The tax records published in the Augusta Chronicle 1790-1797showing Elisha as delinquint in Wilkes Co, may merely indicate that he had moved to Clarke by that time. His will, naming his children, was filed in Clarke Co., GA 1803. Elijah may have been the brother or a son of Elisha. The son moved to Bledsoe Co., TN. There are no census records for GA or the land called Mississippi Territory that became Alabama and Mississippi before 1820, but there are some early tax lists which show on the LDS AIS index search. Franklin Co., GA - 1808 Tax List _ _ _ _ ? GENTRY 1800-1801 Tax list - Tyree GENTRY 1816 Tax List Reason GENTRY 1809 Petition - Washington Dist. Mississippi Terr. - James and Elijah Gentry sign 1810 TX List - Washington Dist in Alabama/Miss Territory - Simon and Jesse Gentry (Washington District in the SWcorner of AL) 1816 TX list - Alabama - James Gentry is in Clarke Co. and Elijah Gentry in Monroe Co. both which are in what was called Washington Dist. Miss.Terr in 1800. 1818 TX list - Alabama - Daniel Gentry is in Bibb Co. where on the 1820 census appear Daniel and Isaac Gentry (sons of Simon Gentry who was son of David and Sarah Brooks Gentry) In Dec 1818, Jackson Co. GA was again cut up to make 3 more counties . . Walton, Gwinnett and Hall. So now on the 1820 census we find these two sons of Elisha Sr. in Walton Co. . . Elisha Gentry - (?m. Elizabeth lived Fayette Co.) Martin Gentry ( ?m. Elizabeth - lived Caroll Co.) Other sons of Elisha - Cain, Micajah and David moved together to Rhea/McMinn Co.,TN by 1823 where Cain, Allen, William & Neoma, David, John and Shedrick are names that appear on tax records. Cain, Micjah and David later went to Benton Co,AR before 1840. Shedrick went to AL then AR. Allen stayed - who was he? Not all of the above men were brothers - Cain, Micajah, David were sons of Elisha Gentry. William Gentry died and left widow Neoma and possibly their son was the Shedrick who then appears and marries Rebecca Ballard in 1825 he was in War of 1812. There were 3 Allen Gentry on the 1830 census in McMinn TN - who were they, where did they come from and where did they go? By looking at all the other Gentry who moved out of SC and at their migration and their children's migration I hope to find the answer. Pamela Geisler Smith Gresham, OR

Hello again, cousins, Most importantly: THANKS for the information that everyone sent to me and directed me toward about all the Nicholases and Elizabeths. You all have both confirmed and corrected my preliminary findings. As I said I was confused about the three Nicholases, and now find I am not descended from Nicholas III after all, but it was his half-sister Elizabeth who married Nathaniel Haggard (who was himself the son of Elizabeth's aunt Elizabeth.) Thanks for clearing that up for me. Just like everyone else, I come up with further questions the more I find. Here are my latest ones: Is there more about Jane Brown, second spouse of Nicholas II? I've also seen it as Jane Brown Austill. Does this indicate a second marriage for her as well, and that her maiden name was indeed Brown? I also am lacking dates and sources for her. And "sources" is my second question. While waiting for some possible sources to arrive by snail-mail, I am currently wondering about the mysterious Lucy Cornelius. Where can we find sources and/or documentation of her dates and marriage to Nicholas I? I've seen other postings on this question, but must have missed seeing the answer. Thanks again, cousins. It sure would be nice if all branches of my tree responded as quickly and helpfully as the Gentrys. Now if I can just assimilate fast enough myself....(I've been told I'm getting older...) This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --part0_911274986_boundary Content-ID: <[email protected]_out.mail.aol.com.1> Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII This may be of interest to those of you who would like to find out if they have "Unclaimed Property" being held at all 50 States and DC. Check out your living and deceased parents, siblings, grandparents, etc. You can prove yourself as heir of someone on their list. Some States are working with Genealogical and Historical Societies to locate some of these lost people!!! You would be surprised how many insurance policies do not list beneficiaries. Sometimes if there is a beneficiary, no additional information was supplied such as address or social security number. You may not even have known that your parents took out a loan and listed you as beneficiary on the insurance policy they took out! I think this is a great site for anyone working with genealogy. Knowing how to prove heirs comes in very handy when claiming property of a deceased family member. As for the site foundmoney site, it would be worth your while to check it out. Be careful that it is not a site where you have to pay them to claim this money for you. You can contact the State yourself and usually not pay anything depending on what State holds your money. They want to give you the money almost as much as you want it! If you are interested in finding if a State is holding Unclaimed Property for you, look at this website: http://www.unclaimed.org/ All 50 States and DC have representatives in this national organization of the above website, NAUPA [National Association of Unclaimed Property Association. I work for a Finance Company and have gone to 2 of thier conferences. My job is to maintain uncashed checks and filing State Reports for my employer. We pay out thousands of dollars a years to the State in checks that go uncashed [usually overpayment on loans]. Unclaimed Property is paid to the State of "last known residence" if known. Unfortunately, if no address is supplied, it is paid to the State of where the Business if incorporated. So you can have money in any State and never know it! Also, some States have reciprocal reporting with other States. A company can report all residences of those States to just one State. Actually, it would be best to search all States that have searchable databases. Unclaimed Property can be Uncashed Checks, Safety Deposit Box contents, Gift Certificates, Stocks, Saving Account Funds, Insurance Drafts etc... Access the website to read more. Please pass this along to anyone who would be interested. Let me know if you find anything! Along the lines of this request ... if anyone has info on Nancy Gentry m. Joseph Baugh on March 3, 1796 w/Martin Green posting the bond, plz send it along. I have scant info on Nancy and would appreciate being able to find her parents, etc. I have text from a letter written by a closer descendant of Nancy's that describes her family as being Heugenot from SC, thus she is not from the traditional Gentry line about which we know so much. Hi Cousins, I've seen a couple of inquires about the Gentry family Gazette recently. I have no idea if they are still in business or not. In November of 1997 I sent my money for a subscription. About 2 months later I got a welcome letter and some info. That is the last I heard from them. I wrote about not getting anything and asked for either the issues for this year, or a refund. I got neither. Nor did I get any kind of reply. I would not recommend anyone trying to subscribe. I would say they probably are not in business any longer. And they still have my $25. For those of you who may be descended through the Carroll Co MO GENTRYs, who earlier had been in Adair Co MO, you can get a reprint of the 1881 Carroll Co MO history book, minus the 200 odd pages of MO history. I just ordered it, can't wait to get it. I wasn't allowed to zerox pages of a copy of the original book, which I found in 1980, just had to take some notes from it. This is a great place also to get that copy of the 1909 "Gentry Family in America". http://www.higginsonbooks.com/ HOMEPAGE http://www.public.usit.net/gflesher *************************************** * * JOHN WAYNE * * * Genealogy, Surnames, Pictures * * Missing Children, Collectables, * * and other links. * * WEB PAGE DESIGN * *************************************** INTERESTED IN SONGWRITING? http://members.xoom.com/wtsongwriter/index.html ***************************************
