    3. Good Morning from snowy Ohio! We just measured it and there's 8 inches on the ground. More tonight! This is for anyone who is not aware that you can search the GENTRY-L archives on Rootsweb. Just go to: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Type in GENTRY-L and hit the submit button. Here's mine, Darrell Gentry (1963 - present) Donald Ray Gentry (1938 - present) Percy Gentry (1912 - 1997) Sydney Anderson Gentry (1885 - 1966) Thomas Benton Gentry (1843 - 1900) Anderson Gentry (1806 - 1899) Thomas Gentry (1782 - 1849) Benajah Gentry (1733 - 1831) Nicholas Gentry II ( ? - 1799) Nicholas Gentry I (~1655 - 1755 (?) ) Samuel Gentry - Of course this is disputed by some on this list since there is no record in England of Nicolas I, but I'll put it in until someone proves otherwise. :-) I noticed in Meg's info that she has Nicholas I died in 1710. The info I have puts his death around 1755. Does anyone know which date is correct? Also, does anyone know the birth date of Nicholas II? I have that he was baptized on May 30, 1697 but I do not know when he was born. 1. My GENTRY line and HAGGARD line too
    2. Virginia Flesher
    3. For a number of years, I've had in my possession, about half a dozen copies of GENTRY FAMILY GAZETTE AND GENEALOGY, which were given to me by J.C. GENTRY, of Cabot, AR. As far as we knew then, we were not related. I have not been in contact with him, so I still don't know. In recent times, I have corresponded with Sheridan G. EVANS, of Kirkland, WA, as well as his sister, Joyce LINDSTROM, of Lewisville, ID, and they have supplied me with a lot of GENTRY information, and helped me connect back to Nicholas GENTRY I, the immigrant, and supposed brother of Samuel. They got a lot of help from Leland Homer GENTRY of Salt Lake City, and I also corresponded with Leland. The last I knew, Joyce's address is: [email protected] My GENTRYs migrated from Virginia to Kentucky to Missouri, then to Arkansas. Benjah Brooks GENTRY, b. 22 May, 1786, and his second wife, Rachel PHILLIPS, m. 19 Apr, 1809. George W. m Matilda ?(She was widowed, and later married Oscar ROBERTSON John W.,m Micah Elvira COOPER in Carroll Co MO) My grandfather, Elbert Marion GENTRY, b. 15 Mar, 1879 in Carroll Co. MO, d. Jackson Co. AR Micah "Mickey" COOPER) was the grandaughter of Benjah's brother, Robert GENTRY, b. 03 Apr 1784, and wife, Julia SIMPSON b. 1785, m. 03 Mar 1806 in Adair Co. KY. Micah's mother was Micah Mickey GENTRY, Robert and Benjah were sons of Nicholas III. That makes me doubly-descended, doesn't it? My only puzzle, as far as the GENTRY line is concerned, is what happened to Elbert's brother, Thomas. The last my mother (Essie Lee GENTRY HILL MOSS, deceased Aug 1998) saw of him, was at her father's funeral in Jackson Co AR. She knew he had several children, but didn't remember any of their names. It grieved her so that neither he nor his family kept up with her, especially since her father and mother died months apart, leaving Mother a young widow with a child, and also six younger siblings, one only a few weeks old. This was in 1927. Tom GENTRY supposedly lived at Eldorado, AR, at one time. Also, I have a friend who lives in Milan, and she is descended from Elizabeth GENTRY, (daughter of Nicholas II) b. 1731, who m. Nathaniel HAGGARD. They moved in 1788 to Clark Co. KY. She loaned me a book of the HAGGARD family, and I copied all pages dealing with GENTRY-HAGGARD ties. There was also a brother of Nathaniel HAGGARD, Edmund, who's grandson William, b. 05 Apr 1785, m. Polly GENTRY (b.in Madison Co, KY, and d. in Dubuque Co, IA). William's brother, David, b. 30 Jun 1789, married Elizabeth GENTRY, daughter of Jane Haggard GENTRY. This book is History of the HAGGARD family in England and America, 1433 to 1899 by David D. HAGGARD. 929.273 H122h On page 22 starts "Descendants of Nathaniel Haggard" "The records show that Nathaniel Haggard was born November 21, 1723, and that he married Elizabeth Gentry, a lady of English descent, and that they settled in Albemarle County, Virginia, near Charlottsbille. they were members of the Baptist church. they raised a family of seven sons and three daughters, as follows: Henry, born 1745: Baptist Preacher. Martin, born 1748; Baptist preacher. Elizabeth, born 1752, married Ned Kindred, a Baptist preacher. James, born 1759; Baptist preacher. Jane, born 1761; married a Mr. Gentry. (penciled in notes: Married Aug 7, 1785 to David Gentry. Also a date, Aug 1, 1841 death date for Jane, perhaps) Bartlett, born 1764 (Feb 4 penciled, also, May 18, 1847) carpenter and farmer (married Nov 17, 1785) David, born 1764, carpenter and farmer, twin to Bartlett. "Nathaniel Haggard family removed to Clark co Ky, and settled between Winchester and Boonsborough." I am sending this to list also: These friends of mine, descendants of Elizabeth Gentry and Nathaniel Haggard, list their lineage thusly: Nicholas Gentry I (the immigrant) Nicholas Gentry II (1697) Elizabeth Gentry (1731) sp Nathaniel Haggard (1723) I know their research has been done by their eldest daughter, who has been very active in genealogy, and has edited a West TN genealogy paper, and was the spearhead behind getting our county history published. The Haggard book says also that a grandson of Edmund Haggard, William, married Polly Gentry Jan 12, 1809. "In an early day he moved to Iowa and raised a large family". His brother David Haggard, born Jun 30, 1789 married Elizabeth Gentry, daughter of Jane Haggard Gentry, Jan 12, 1809. He died in Dubuque co Ia, Dec 21, 1865. His wife was born in Madison Co, Ky, Jan 6, 1788. She d. in Dubuque co, Ia, Sep 10, 1846, 13 children, 7 sons , 6 dau. I would think this particular book was published some time ago, because, I quote, "Nancy Haggard Smith, b. march 6, 1817,-lived at Strawberry Point, IA- has the old family bible, and is still living." She was the daughter of David and Elizabeth, above. 3. Well here goes my husbands Gentry line: Elisha Gentry b. 31 Aug 1818 GA m. Martha ? c1836 (now know she was Martha Knot) She was born 12 Apr 1812 SC Their children were: 1. Louisa b. c1837 GA 2. George W. b. c1838 GA 3. Martha C. b. c1842 GA 4. William C. b. c1845 GA *5. David b. c1847 GA *6. Rudy(?) b. c1849 GA 7. Richard b. c1850 GA 8. Mary F. (Caroline?) b. c1852 GA 9. Elisha (John) b. c1855 GA (All of the above taken from the 1860 & 1870 census for Carroll Co., GA) I did not know until recently which child (either #5 David or #6 Rudy?)was my husbands ancestor and will post that info following what I did know. Either #5 David or #6 Rudy m. Rebecca ? b. 22 Jun 1848, d. 18 Mar 1919. She married a Dr. Craven in Roopville, Carroll Co., GA after her 1st husbands death. Their child: 1. She was born 13 Dec 1895 Carrollton, Carroll Co., GA d. 20 Aug 1995 Roopville, Carroll Co., GA. Their children: 1. Kermit (Pete) b. 4 Oct 1918 d. 23 Oct 1987 2. Myrtice Zell b. 26 Dec 1920 3. Frances (female) b. 7 Feb 1923 d. ? 4. Arthur John b. 12 Jul 1925 d. 18 Dec 1959 5. William Edward b. 8 May 1928 6. Martha Ann b. 19 Mar 1930 d. 22 Mar 1930 7. Marcella (Sally) b. ? *8. Sarah Mae b. 15 Nov 1935 #8 Sarah Mae m. John Adelburt Sutton 6 Aug 1960. John b. 1 Oct 1932 MO. Their children: *1. Stephen A. b. 19 Jul 1957 Carrollton, Carroll Co., GA(he was adopted by John in 1960) 2. Linda Kay b. 28 Oct 1961 #1 Stephen m. Terry Lynn Gross (me) 26 Apr 1980 Austin, Travis Co., TX. I was born 15 Nov 1955 Charleston, SC (notice same birthdate as mother-in-law Sarah #8 above). We have 2 children: 1. Brittany Nicole b. 25 Dec 1983 Walter Reed Army Med. Ctr., Washington D.C. (I spent Christmas & New Years in the hospital that year). 2. Anthony John (A.J.) b. 21 Aug 1991 Wilford Hall Air Force Hosp., San Antonio, Bexar Co., TX. So my husbands ancestors go something like this: Elisha Gentry to David or Rudy Gentry to Arthur Wade Hampton Gentry to Joseph Edward Gentry to Sarah Mae Gentry to Stephen Anthony Sutton. Now to the information I just received from W. T. (Bill) Dodd concerning the parentage of Elisha Gentry. He states that Elisha is descended this way: Samuel Gentry Nicholas(1) Gentry Samuel Gentry David (Long David) Gentry Elisha Gentry Martin Gentry Elisha (my husbands) Gentry David Gentry (#5 above under Elisha's children-my elusive ? who married Rebecca ?) He married Rebecca D. Thompson (now I have both names) Arthur Wade Hampton Gentry Joseph Gentry Sarah Gentry Sutton Stephen Anthony Sutton So now I have managed to fill in several gaps on this line for which I am forever grateful to Bill. Now all I need to do is get all the documentation on this line, then send it all to my mother-in-law who will be just "tickled pink" with it all. 2. LARRY GENTRY
    3. Unless one of the early Virginia Gentrys moved north, it appears that my New Jersey ancestors were a distinct minority among 18th century Gentrys: "Yankees!" The earliest was apparently JOHN GENTRY of Cumberland Co., NJ (ca 1730-1785. His grandson, HUDSON GENTRY (1781-1859), moved to Franklin Co. Indiana, before 1820. After Hudson, my line is: BATEMAN GENTRY, b. 1814 (NJ), d. 1894 (IN); JONATHAN GENTRY, b. 1847 (IN), d. 1920 (AL); EMMETT GENTRY, b. 1875 (IN), d. 1925 (MI); RAYMOND GENTRY, b. 1905 (IN), d. 1981 (CA); LARRY GENTRY, b. 1939 (MI) I would love to hear from anyone who can help me flesh out my New Jersey origins. ____________________________________________________________________ Get free e-mail and a permanent address at http://www.netaddress.com/?N=1
