Battey & Co., 1883) p. 440: CLARKSON L. CATE, son of John and Rachel (Pierce) Cate, was born in Wayne County, Ind., December 31, 1853; his parents were natives of Tennessee, and came to Howard County in October, 1854; his father located in Jackson Township, purchased a farm in its native state, and began, with the assistance of his sons, to clear the land. Clarkson commenced teaching school in 1872, and has engaged in this occupation ever since. He made his start by farming, and the fall of 1877 purchased his first piece of land. He has since added two other tracts and now owns 120 acres of good farm land, on which he has built a fine house, in which he resides. Mr. Cates' youthful experience at home in clearing and cultivating the farm has been greatly advantageous to him; he has taught seven terms in the schoolhouse where he received his education, and has been elected Township Assessor for three terms in succession. He was married, in 1877, to Miss Mary Alice Gentry. They have had two children, Nora and Maud (deceased October 5, 1880). Mr. Cate had three brothers in the late war, the eldest of whom was shot in the head and killed while with Gen. Sherman. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- GENTRY, Jonathan R. Posted by Fathers of the Ridge; Vol 1; George Rowland on Sun, 13 Dec 1998 Surnames: GENTRY, BULL, CRAWFORD, HOWARD, WOOD, DOVER, DALTON, MCWHIRTER, KAMINER, LUMPKINS Jonathan R. Gentry was born in Georgia in about 1805. His wife, Sarah J., was born in Virginia in 1811. In 1850 the Gentry family was living in Weakley County, Tennessee in Civil District 12. At this time, their children were: Parthena, 1830; Samuel, 1835; William, 1838; John, 1839; Gilbert L., 1841; Emily, 1843; Sophronia, 1846; N. Wilson, 1848; and Robert E., 1859. All these children were born in Tennessee. By 1860 this family had moved to Greene County and taken up residence in Union Township. At this time a child named Mary Johnson, born in Kentucky in 1857, was living in the same household. William Gentry married a woman named Mary J., born in Tennessee in 1835. In 1880 they lived in Union Township and their children at home at this time were: Sallie P. (Sarah), 1867; Willie, 1869; and James R., 1870. Sallie was born in Tennessee and Willie and James were born in Arkansas. A man named Richard P. Bull, born in Tennessee in 1859, a newspaper editor, was boarding with the family at this time. Others boarding with the family were: Joseph Crawford, born in Tennessee in 1854; and Claudia Howard, born in Georgia in 1868. Two servants in the household were: Cal Wood, born in Arkansas in 1859; and John Dover, born in Alabama in 1857. Frank Dalton, a printer born in Missouri in 1832, lived next to the William L. Gentry family at this time. There is reason to believe that Richard Bull and Frank Dalton were publishers of the newspaper in Gainesville at that time. Gilbert Gentry married Nancy A. McWhirter, born in Tennessee in 1847. Nancy was the daughter of John L. and Matilda McWhirter who were born in Tennessee in 1825 and 1828 respectively. In 1880 the children of Gilbert and Nancy were: Joseph W., 1872; Laurette A., 1874; Oney E., 1876; William G., 1878; and Albert, born in Dec. of 1879. After the death of his first wife, Gilbert married Frances Drollender, daughter of W. W. and Elizabeth Drollender who had moved to Greene County from Weakley County, Tennessee during the 1850's. Samuel Gentry, son of Jonathan and Sarah, married a woman named Julian, born in Tennessee in 1840. In 1870 they lived in Union Township and their children at home were: Adela E., 1861; Joseph E., 1863; Samuel C., 1867; and Walter W., 1869. Joseph Gentry, son of Samuel and Julian, married Mattie Kaminer on Dec. 15, 1883 in Greene County. Mattie was 17 years of age at the time. In 1880, Jonathan R. Gentry and his wife, Sarah J., were still living in Union Township. Their grandsons, Joseph E. and Orville Gentry, were living with them at this time. Martha Lumpkins, born in Virginia in 1860, was a servant in the household. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Bridwell, Susan Birth : 15 AUG 1830 ,Spencer Co,KY Death : 21 APR 1885 Gender: Female Parents: Father: Bridwell, Fielding Mother: Briscoe, Martha H. Mr Jefferson for more than a century was prominent in the business circles of Cadiz and Trigg county. Mr Jefferson was 84 years of age. Next week this publication will carry the complete obituary of this well known man. Funeral Services Held For John J Jefferson Here Friday Was Leading Figure in Church, Civic and Business Activities in Trigg County For Many Years John James JEFFERSON after three weeks of critical illness passed away last Thursday morning at 6:15 a.m. at the Magraw Clinic. Heart trouble was the contributing cause of his demise, an ailment he had suffered for many years. Mr Jefferson was born on April 18 1859 in Wallonia, Ky and was the son of Peterfield and Amoret BINGHAM JEFFERSON. He was a member of the famous family which gave to Americans the 3rd President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson. Mr Jefferson had been actively engaged in the mercantile business for more than 60 years and was well know throughout the western part of Kentucky. Last May he retired from business and sold his interest in the Jefferson Street firm to Mr E.R. Street his partner. His death closed a remarkable career in business annals of the county, for way back in 1882 Mr Jefferson, a young man of 23 entered the firm of John L. Street and Sons as a clerk. He rose rapidly as the years passed and during his service with the company it progressed and succeeded remarkably. Intensely interested in Masonry, Mr Jefferson was outstanding in the lodges activities. He was a member of the Cadiz Lodge 121 and was the grand Worthy Patron of the Ophelia Chapter of the Easter Star for many years, and was intensely interested in the organizations work. Next to his church, he held Masonry and its ideals, highest in his heart and deeds for he lived and acted his Masonic beliefs to the letter. Sincere loyalty and devotion to his church, was probably his outstanding characteristic for he was known and loved throughout the Louisville Methodist Conference for his diligent service and devotion to his church the Cadiz Methodist Church of which he was a lifetime member. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Chappell of Chappell Hill, Texas in 1890 and to this union was born one daughter. His wife preceded him to the grave several years ago. Because of his tolerance and good judgment his love of fellow man his inherent trail to calmly think things thru to a logical conclusion and his knowledge, he was without a doubt the best beloved man in the county, for it was to him that everyone rich and poor, relative or friend came for advise and consolation when it was needed. His life was an example that Trigg contians can hold up to their sons and their sons, for everyone who knew him was the better for his acquaintance. Funeral services were conducted from Mr Jefferson's home at 3:00 o'clock Friday afternoon, March 17. Services were conducted by his pastor, Rev T.C. Morrison, assisted by two former pastors, Rev E.M. Kellor now of Irvington, Ky and Rev. E.R. Noland now of Marion, Ky. Burial was made at East End Cemetery by the side of his beloved wife. During the service, Mrs E.T. McCarty and Mrs P.A. Blane who had been closely associated with Mr Jefferson in the Methodist Church Choir, sang one of his favorite hymns, "Close to Thee" Mrs Karle Glenn accompanies Mrs McCarty and Mrs Blane. Those in charge of the flowers were : Mrs Graham Egerton, Mrs E.W. Malone, Mrs Stanley White, Mrs Edward C. Headley, Mrs John F White, Miss Edna Cunningham and Miss Lurline Humphries. The pallbearers were: Edward Street, James Gentry, Karle Glenn, Arthur Banister, Lexie Bush and W.H. Rawls. Total Confederate Killed or Mortally Wounded .... 148 DIED IN HOSPITALS AFTER THE BATTLE (not including those named above as mortally wounded; not necessarily battle casualties - some of these died of disease; these do not have memorial markers in the Zollicoffer Confederate Cemetery) 28th Tenn. Inf. GENTRY Jesse Co. B died Jan. 28, 1862 7 (Foot-note obtaining to these records fromZollicoffer Confederate Cemetery.) INTRODUCTION -- This listing is a compilation of Confederate States Army casualties suffered during the campaign and battle of Mill Springs, Kentucky, 19 January 1862 (also called the battle of Fishing Creek, or Logan's Crossroads). Those who were killed in action were (with the following exceptions) buried in unmarked mass graves on the battlefield. In addition, those who were mortally wounded were buried at the sites of various field hospitals in the area. In May 1997, the Sons of Confederate Veterans Gen. Ben Hardin Helm Camp 1703, along with the Mill Springs Battlefield Assn., erected memorial grave markers near the location of one of the mass graves on the battlefield. These markers were for all of those casualties noted as having been killed or mortally wounded during the battle (whether buried on the battlefield or at field hospital sites). This Zollicoffer Confederate Cemetery includes markers for Gen. Zollicoffer (command and staff) and Lt. Bailie Peyton, Jr. (20th Tenn. Inf.), although their bodies were removed to Nashville for burial after the battle. Markers were not erected for those listed below who died in the area either before or after the battle, but who were probably not actual battle casualties. NOTES General -- Names, ranks, and dates differ from source to source. For the purposes of this listing, the data found in the Compiled Service Records or unit histories are considered to be the most correct. Significant differences have been shown in parentheses or in these notes. Refer to GR Walden's Mill Springs bibliography for complete citations. (Notes for missing numbers below belong to a separate compilation.) 4. The bodies of Gen. Zollicoffer and Lt. Peyton were removed to Nashville for burial. Gen. Zollicoffer is buried in the Old City Cemetery. There is some evidence that Capt. Fogg's body may also have been removed, but this is not certain. 5. OR I,7, page 109. Fogg's rank is variously given as Lt., Capt., and Maj. (listed as Capt. in Tennesseans in the Civil War, Part 2). Fogg's initials confirmed by entries in Zollicoffer (1861-62). Saunders (1982), page 188, says he was mortally wounded and died in a Federal hospital in Somerset. 28. Simpson (1910), page 336. 29. Worsham (1902), page 26. 30. McMurray (1904), pages 98, 180. 31. No Compiled Service Record in microfilm rolls. 44. "Sketch of the Water Valley Rifles, Co. F, 15th Regt.," Mississippi Dept. Archives & Hist. James Womack is listed as "Jesse." 45. Sketch of Co. G, 15th Miss., Mississippi Dept. Archives & Hist. Land is listed as "Laud" in Binford MS; Black is not listed elsewhere, and may have simply been wounded instead of killed. 46. Binford MS "Recollections." Harrington is listed as a Lt. A Jack McKey is listed by Rietti, p. 192; probably same as Thom. J. McKey. 47. This may be the Cox noted as having died near Mill Springs about Jan. 29, 1862 - no other Cox in the microfilm CSRs fits. See Note 28. 48. Brister was wounded, captured, and later died. His CSR does not actually state that his death was due to his wound. 49. Spencer may not actually be a casualty of the battle. His CSR says he "died Mill Spring Ky. Jan. 19/62." Most of the muster roll entries for the other casualties say "killed at Fishing Creek, Jan. 19, 1862." 50. "Final Statements of Deceased Soldiers," Mississippi Dept. of Archives & Hist. Probably the same as Pvt. Juekson G. Davis, Co. B - listed as having died at Mill Springs on Dec. 31, 1861 (CSR) (listed by Watkins as G. Jackson Davis, died Dec. 31, 1861). 51. Waters (1992), page 139, lists him as "Ensign, Killed at Fishing Creek." The rank of Ensign did not exist in the Confederate Army until 1864; this rank was held by regimental color-bearers.52. Waters (1992), page 127 53. Listed by Raymond Watkins, Falls Church, VA, from information in the Compiled Service Records, National Archives 54. Question mark appears on Watkins' list; Zollicoffer's forces were not in the vicinity of Mill Springs until late November 1861. 55. Hi Cousins, I've added a little more tonight. Some Military records for the civil war, some South Carolina Records and changed the North Carolina section and added a cemetery, from Ashe Co., NC, thanks to Warren Houck who gave his permission to use it. He had it on the NC GENWEB page and I found it and asked if I could use it. Have a nice Sunday! My Grandfather was in the Civil War. His name was William Christian Gentry. He was in The 29th Mississippi Regiment, Company B, Infantry, Walthall' Brigade. Lois
I found this on another genealogy list. I hope that you all enjoy these. DEB Murphy's Law for Genealogists *The public ceremony in which your distinguished ancestor participated and at which the platform collapsed under him turned out to be a hanging. *When at last after much hard work you have solved the mystery you have been working on for two years, your aunt says, "I could have told you that". *Your grandmother's maiden name that you have searched for, for four years, was on a letter in a box in the attic all the time. *You never asked your father about his family when he was alive because you weren't interested in genealogy then. *The will you need is in the safe on board the Titanic. *Copies of old newspapers have holes occurring only on the surnames. *John, son of Thomas, the immigrant whom your relatives claim as the family progenitor, died on board ship at age 10. *Your great grandfather's newspaper obituary states that he died leaving no issue of record. *The keeper of the vital records you need has just been insulted by a another genealogist. *The relative who had all the family photographs gave them all to her daughter who has no interest in genealogy and no inclination to share. *The only record you find for your great grandfather is that his property was sold at a sheriff's sale for insolvency. *The one document that would supply the missing link in your dead-end line has been lost due to fire, flood, or war. *The town clerk to whom you wrote for the information sends you a long handwritten letter which is totally illegible. *The spelling of your European ancestor's name bears no relationship to its current spelling or pronunciation. *None of the pictures in your recently deceased grandmother's photo album have names written on them. *No one in your family tree ever did anything noteworthy, owned property, was sued, or was named in wills. *You learn that your great aunt's executor just sold her life's collection of family genealogical materials to a flea market dealer "somewhere in New York City." *Ink fades and paper deteriorates at a rate inversely proportional to the value of the data recorded. *The 37-volume, 16,000-page history of your county of origin isn't indexed. *You finally find your great grandparent's wedding records and discover that the brides' father was named John Smith. I'll add one more from personal experience: Your aunt's new husband thought that the family photographs grandma collected for over 90 years were only fit for a bonfire. Your uncle saved the last 20 lb box out of three. They haven't spoken since.
Sorry, I guess I didn't give the Mt Pleasant Church link. Please go to Granny's Genealogy page, listed below, you will want to also read Tanglewood Park history, as this is where the cemetery is. Looking for the parents of William J. GENTRY born in AL of unknown parents and moved to Mississippi where he married the widow of G.G. Hunt in about 1855. Temperance M. Gentry had two children by her first marriage: James Jefferson HUNT and John J. HUNT born 1852 and 1854 respsectively. Then she had the following GENTRY children: Amanda GENTRY (b. 1857), Allen GENTRY (b. 1858), Mary Alice GENTRY (b. 1859), Thomas GENTRY (b. 1866), Elizabeth L. GENTRY(b. 1868 in LA). The family were farmers and lumbermen. By 1900 this family had moved to Angelina Co, TX near Lufkin. Reply to [email protected] Barb in Baltimore.
