    3. Jayme, I can help some. I speak a little German-not enough to translate the whole thing, but enough to get some more clues. I tried the Babelfish site, and it's awfully literal, translating words rather than phrases. It also can't guess at words that are misspelled due to worn stones. I'm pretty sure the crossbars are worn off of several t's, making them look like l's. You're right, geb. Is an abbreviation for geboren = BORN Gallin I think should be Gattin = WIFE. Von = from or of, so Gattin von = WIFE OF I think you're right about the names. It's not so much that Matter and Jonghans translate to Martin and Junkins, but that's the way names changed with emigration. The first phrase I can't get much out of. Aus des = from the Arme can be poor man/poor woman, or it can be ARMS. "In die Arme nehmen" means hug or embrace-maybe that's the idea. Und = AND Dem = a form of THE Kreis = CIRCLE or CYCLE (life & death, maybe?) Der = THE Kmdor-my best guess is Kinder, with the I and n squished together and the middle of the e worn away. Kinder = CHILDREN, but I can't make sense of that in context. Russ = SOOT (maybe something like "ashes to ashes?) Todes is a form of Tod = DEATH or maybe "the dead" Strenges = SEVERE, AUSTERE, STRICT, HARSH Grunder-Grund = GROUND, BASIS, FOUNDATION. I think Grunder is the plural form. Ach = OH Wir = WE Sund-could it be sind? Sind = ARE, as in "we are." Nichls I think is nichts = NOT Uns = US The second phrase I can do a bit better on. Ich = I Liege = LIE Und = AND Schlufe I think is schlafe = SLEEP, so "Ich liege und schlafe" = "I lie and sleep" Gan ??? Maybe a wrong letter in there. Or ganz = COMPLETELY, so maybe the z is worn off Mil I think is mit = WITH Frieden = Peace, so "mit frieden" = "with peace," "in peace" or "at peace" Denn = BECAUSE Allein = ALONE Du Herr = You, Lord (GOD) (Herr can also be gentleman, as Babelfish translates it) Hilfst = HELP Mir = ME, so "Denn allein Du Herr hilfst mir" = "Because You alone, Lord, help me" Dosz ???? Ich = I Sicher = SAFE, SECURE Wohne = LIVE (I live) German has different rules for capitalization than English. In German, all nouns are capitalized. If you copied the inscriptions with the capitals, please repost that way. Being able to tell the nouns from the verbs may give me or somebody else another clue. Also, knowing that many of the t's are worn and look like l's, is it possible you could go back and look again with that in mind? German is a highly dialectic language, so that may be part of the puzzle. Do you know what part of Germany these people came from? That may give us another clue. Or, if you don't know, it's possible some bit of dialect on the gravestones may give you a clue what region they came from! I currently live in Germany, and have friends who can probably translate what I can't, if we can figure out what the right letters and words are. To me, this is a challenging puzzle, and I love a good puzzle! Please don't hesitate to contact me. Good luck! Allison Baugh
