My understanding of the "nth" cousin "so many times" removed is that the "nth" refers to how far back the common ancestor is, and the "so many times" refers to the generation. So the child of my first cousin is my first cousin once removed, because s/he is not the same generation as I (the common ancestor is my grandparent). But my first cousin's child and my child are 2nd cousins. I have a wonderful diagram I made to explain this, but have yet to scan it and put it anywhere. Someday... Alice J. Ramsay Lombard, IL USA
