Hello, Does anyone know, or can anyone direct me to a site where I might find out, the origin of the given name Ida? That was my great grandmother's name. But it puzzles me why at the age of 10 she was listed in the 1880 Census as Sarah E. P. WHITLEY. She was known as Ida in her adulthood, and that name is on her tombstone, death certificate, obituary, her second marriage certificate, and later Census records. It occurred to me that either the E. or the P. could stand for a longer name that was later shortened to Ida (as, for example, Elizabeth becomes Beth or Rebecca become Becky. Her mother, who was Marilsa in 1880 but Rilsa in 1900, provides another example.) I would appreciate any information or comments anyone can provide on this matter! Thanks a lot! LouDean
