My mother died in 1996 and she is listed on the SSDI. No one received a final death benefit but she was receiving a social security check monthly prior to her death. The funeral home was kind enough to notify SSA of her death for us. (We, the family, a couple of weeks later, confirmed that SSA got the correct information -- and discontinued her monthly checks.)
