Ah, how true. In fact it is illegal in the State of Missouri for any courthouse to charge a veteran to file a copy of his DD-214. You think someday I may drag my tail up to Clayton and record mine?? Course, I have a keep a copy in the safe deposit box so I know where it is. Seriously though folks, if you are married to a veteran, ask him/her where that certificate is. Nag, henpeck, harp whatever, but find it, get it recorded at the courthouse or at minimum put it in a safe deposit box. For those who have prearranged funeral plans, give a copy to your funeral home. I don't know how many times I've seen during the past 400+ funerals I've attended where a certificate was not available. That piece of paper is probably the MOST IMPORTANT piece of paper that a veteran can own. I can hear the comments/flames now but it is true.
