Hi All, I had to get this on the web for all those WALKERs searching out there. I had an uncle whose name was Heinrich Leonhardt Niederwohrmann who was born in Geestemunde, Germany, about 1895. He entered this country (sometime before 1915) and they wrote the correct name. He changed his name legally, sometime between 1916 and 1919, because he was tired of people saying, "Niederwhaaaat?". Even the judge said it and he responded that was exactly why he wanted it changed. When he was asked what he wanted it to be he said he did not care as long as it could be pronounced easily. The judge rattled off some names like, Smith, Jones, Green and finally he said Walker and that is when Heinrich said that name was ok with him. The judge changed the spelling and gave him the new name. If I do not tell anyone, they will not know where to search, thinking he came to this country with the name and will keep looking for Henry Leonard WALKER. These lists are archived so now he is on the web, just in case someone is looking for a lost relative with a name like Neiderwohrmann from Geestemunde, Germany. A long time ago I looked on a map and Geestemunde was about 100 miles from Frankfort. (sp) His mother's name was Anna Loring and his father was Fritz Niederewohrmann.
