Can anyone explain the marriage bonds to me? I've gotten copies and am staggered by the money-$500 & $1000 not unusual. Did common folks really have that much money back in 1800s? That would be a fortune back then, when often inheritances were $5. Also, one of the marriage bonds in NC in 1829 was for 500 POUNDS!! Why is this? Weren't they using dollars by this date?? So much to learn, so little time. Thanks in advance for any enlightenment. Linda
