In Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina and surrounding states, when did obituaries begin to appear in the newspaper for ordinary people.

Tennessee has some going back to 1840. See http://www.state.tn.us/sos/statelib/pubsvs/tn-obits.htm I imagine there are similar collections for Virginia and North Carolina.
