Having a good genealogy program makes this addictive hobby more enjoyable. I have used FAMILY ORIGINS for several years as my primary program, although I have also tried out most of the better known programs. It is excellent both in terms of ease of use, yet with many advanced features for the seasoned genealogist. For those of you looking for a good inexpensive genealogy program that is easy to use, yet with many powerful features, I suggest FAMILY ORIGINS VERSION 6 which is now available from SoftKey. The SoftKey company sells older versions of standard computer programs for approximately $10 at stores such as Staples and Office Max. If you like it, you can later upgrade. I have upgraded to the latest version, but I would be perfectly happy with version 6 if upgrades were not available. For those of you who do not have a genealogy program, don't have a lot of money to spend, can't recommend highly enough this program. Those of you with other programs may want to try it also. The price is right! FAMILY ORIGINS is the best program I have seen for entering sources. You can easily enter a source for every fact. The more one works at this hobby, the more the need for this feature becomes apparent. It is easy to add notes as well and the program has a variety of useful books and lists including a "to do" list. I have over 15,000 names in my database, so give any program hard use. Version 6 runs on both Windows 3.1 as well as Windows 95/98, so those of you who do not have the latest equipment, can use it. I am not discouraging anyone from buying the current version which has even more features; just letting you know this is an inexpensive way to try out a program which may be new to you. And no, I am not a representative of either the SoftKey or Parsons companies, just a SATISFIED user. I use FTM for reading the Broderbund genealogy cdroms, but FAMILY ORIGINS for everything else. Parsons Technology sells the current version. Margaret Scheffler
