    1. DAR
    2. I found where one of my relatives joined the DAR (I think that is the right phrasing). I would like to get copies of the papers she filed. 1. Is that possible. 2. does someone have the address/know that they can share with me. A second questions - she filed on her husbands side of the family from what I find in the Nation Society of the DAR V 107 pg 302. 1. Can I still get copies even though it wasn't actually my family. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Juno offers FREE or PREMIUM Internet access for less! 3. Hi Diane Something at Ancestry is screwed up. I am a member and I tried it before & after signing in, same results as you. The regular databases (older ones) worked fine. I tried two other of the new ones and they did the same thing as the Licking Co database, no info after registering hits. 2. Hello: Does anyone out there receive daily updates on what Ancestry has available for the 15 day free trial? Currently there is a data base entitled " Licking County Ohio Farm Directory 1915 - 1920" .I checked it out and found 18 hits for my Long surname, and I know these are family members. But when I click on " view search results" it says that I am viewing the first 10 of 18 documents, but shows no results. I had someone else try from their computer, and the same results apply. I e-mailed Ancestry, and they told me to clean out my cache file ( which I did), and to sign off and try again ( which I did) but to no avail. They also told me that a server could be down ( which signing off and signing back on would fix) and after two days I still cannot view the search results. Any other suggestions??? 3. Go to the site for SLC/FHC online at: www.familysearch.com there is FREE info on how to prepare for your trip , what to bring and where to stay. I've been there several times and the staff is great, one tip is to remember that the Library closes early on Mondays. If you have any questions, let me know. Diane Diane L. 1. [GT] Re: Preservation Materials
    2. mnark
    3. Hello Nancy and Listers, I'm a pack-rat, and like most of us, have collected file drawers and boxes full of materials related to the various families in my tree. I picked up used 3 ring binders at garage sales for about 25 cents each. I buy boxes of archivally safe plastic sleeves (250/box) at a discount chain (Sam's Club), and archivally safe paper and photo corners at a local office supply. I use a safe glue to fasten (lightly) articles, documents, etc. to pages and insert in a plastic sleeve. The adhesive allows items to be removed and re-arranged. By using the plastic sleeve for each page, you can re-arrange your books as you find items that need to be inserted as you go. I keep a family together until a child marries and then begin a book for them. I decopaged fabric to the outside of each binder to "dress" it up a bit. (Also helps me locate the book I want)Do use clear fingernail polish or some kind of sealer to cover the brads that hold the binder spine or they may rust over time and leak thru the fabric. I've included a history of the state/province, county/Kreis/township, village/city where each family came from and where they lived. I also developed a time-line for each family including events such as births, baptisms, confirmations, marriages, deaths, movements of the family, celebrations, etc.....any important event in the life of a family. (Old diaries really help if you're lucky enough to have them). Hope this helps a bit. Audrey

    1. [GT] Preservation materials
    2. I have decided to organize my bulging genealogy files by creating three-ring binders for each main family line. I want to get some plastic inserts that can hold materials such as documents (birth/death certificates, for example), clippings, photos, etc. Are there such items specifically made for preservation, or can I use whatever I can find at an office supply store? Nancy G.

    1. [GT] Personal Ancestral File (software); Ancestral File (database) (fwd)
    2. Dolly Ziegler
    3. Hello to the lists. This message, following on an earlier post, may interest some people. (If you already know all this terminology, just delete.) Happy new year to all. Cheers, Dolly in Maryland ~~~~~~~~~~ Personal Ancestral File is software; Ancestral File is a database. The names are so similar it can be confusing. PERSONAL ANCESTRAL FILE (PAF) is *software* distributed and supported by the Mormon Church's Genealogical Department. (No data in it until you type in your own data.) Free download at <www.familysearch.org>, or buy the CD for ($5? $10?) Ver. 4.xxx is the standard now; Ver. 5.x was recently released, but many people are reporting "bugs" and advising others to wait a while. ANCESTRAL FILE (AF) is a *database* compiled and supported by the Mormon Church's Genealogical Department. More than 20 million people in it the last I remember; there are probably more now. Almost all the data is patron-submitted, that is, submitted by individuals. Some were more careful about the *accuracy* of their information than others! Contact information on many submitters is part of the program. An AFN (Ancestral File number) is randomly computer-assigned to every entry. If someone refers to Joe Doakes by an AFN, it just means that Great-uncle Joe is included in the AF -- but the information has not been verified by the Genealogical Department. You cannot buy the AF database to use at home, but it is available (free) on the <www.familysearch.org> website, and every Family History Center has the information on CDs. ~~~~~~~~
