    1. TIP: 3 versions of IGI on fiche/CD/website (fwd)
    2. Dolly Ziegler
    3. Hello, fellow searchers. This weekend I was trying to explain the differences in the three versions of the International Genealogical Index that are widely available now. In digging to be precise, I learned a couple of points, too! Thought this may be of interest to others. PLEASE, if you see an error, correct me! (Nicely, of course. ;D) * IGI on microfiche, available at Family History Centers: If you have photocopies, the entries are lined up in columns, names in the first column, several columns of numbers at the right side. At the top, it says "International Genealogical Index" and a date, about 1992. For instance, the IGI for GRIMES in the U.S. is dated March 1992 -- really quite "old" as databases go. If you use only the fiche, you are *missing out* on submissions and extractions during the past eight years. If you don't know the difference between patron submissions and controlled extractions in the IGI, ask at your FHC for a copy of the Resource Guide, "International Genealogical Index (IGI): Finding a Source." Just now I was looking for this on <www.familysearch.org> under search>research helps>Resource Guides, and wasn't able to find it; it is publication #31024. * IGI on CDs, also in Family History Centers: This is considerably larger because it has about four more years of submissions and extractions. The "main" IGI is dated March 1993, the "addendum" February 1997. A NEW IGI ADDENDUM IS WIDELY EXPECTED TO BE RELEASED THIS YEAR, but I can't quote you an authoritative source. * IGI on the website, <www.familysearch.org>: of course this is the most up-to-date version. You may know that the Family History Department has announced they are making very large uploads of information to the website, starting this month, February 2001. I don't have details but when the FHD says that, I expect LOTS of new data. Cheers, Dolly Ziegler in Maryland

    1. Re: GenTips-D Digest V01 #4
    2. Dear Jean: You have his name and service unit, send to the National Archives for his military records. It will list where he died, and possibly where he was buried. The only other suggestion is to check local burial sites in and around German town Tennessee. You might check with the local historical society, they could better direct you to sites that were used to bury the dead during the war. If he died in a hospital, check with the historical society for the names of military hospitals in the area at that time. If he died of typhoid, he was probably buried immediately and near by. I do not think that they would let the body travel home with an infectious disease. Diane Eaton Hacker famlygeni@aol.com

    1. Re: Civil War Burial List
    2. MScheffler
    3. Our local library has some older volumes with civil war burials -- obviously not complete, and somewhat difficult to interpret because there are so many common names. Some of the lists I have seen only have names without other information to help you determine if you have found the right person. You might try historical societies in the areas of interest to see what they have. I would try the areas in which the person lived before enlisting as frequently area histories summarize the people from their towns who died in the various wars. Margaret Scheffler

    1. Census Programs
    2. Kathy Brown
    3. I'm behind on my e-mail and just read this November/December thread. There's a wonderful census program available as freeware: GACP, the Great American Census Program. It includes templates for 1790-1920 censuses. The only disadvantage is that it's a DOS program, last updated in 1996. Output goes to a text file and you have to figure out how to print it with your word processing software. The link to download GACP is at: http://www.users.ticnet.com/stevem/ Look in the "Files" section about half-way down the page for GACP220.ZIP. Just above the download link there's a link to "Text Files With Strange Characters." That will help you print the census output. Kathy

    1. Re: Locating Someone in the Military
    2. Jan and GenTippers, Start with what you know which is her death year and probable place of residence. Go to ancestry.com and do a Social Security Death Index search (this area is free). There you will find that Wilma lived in Arnold, Maryland and her SS# was 223-66-2158. While at the results page click on the "request information" link and you will find a form letter that you can copy and print and send for her SS information. Decide your next step after you get the information. Good luck in your research, one step at a time, backwards.
