My great grandfather was listed in the 1889/90 Brooklyn, Directory as being a Shipjoiner. Could I have an explanation as to what type of work this would be? Thank you.
Wouldn't that be "Railway Man"?
Ry is an accepted abbreviation for railway. I don't remember who was asking about finding ships arrivals, but on another list I learned about Morton-Allen Directory of Ships' Arrivals in the US. This book is organized by year, shipping line, ports of departure and arrival, and ships' names, and the actual dates that the ships arrived into port. I haven't checked it out yet, but when I visit the Family History Center I plan to have a look at it. Hope it helps someone. On an ancestors birth certificate, the father's occupation is listed as "Ry man". Any idea what this is? He lived in Minnesota. Lea Ann _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Hi Kathy, Here's a link to a helpful site called "Archaic Medical Terms." http://www.paul_smith.doctors.org.uk/ArchaicMedicalTerms.htm Under "canker": Any skin ulcer or sore but as the derivation of the word is the same as that for cancer it may suggest skin cancer Under "Throat Fever": Probably diphtheria Good luck! ~Colleen
I have found an unusual cause of death while researching in MA. Does anyone know what the term, "throat canker," was? I take it, it was also contagious. Thanks. kathy

Celia, Try going to http://www.istg.rootsweb.com for lists of ships going to Jamaica in the 1700's from England. Good Hunting
Is there somewhere on the net I can find the names of ships that sailed from Scotland or Ireland about 1760-1770 and the list of passengers. The ship I am looking for was headed for Jamaica. Thanks! Celia

The WebWide Surname Locator has been updated. Thousands of surname pages have been indexed from across the web. It can help you with the surnames that are hard to research like PARKS, WOOD, BRIDGES, etc. These are not only surnames but also common English words that the normal search engine will give hundreds of irrelevent results for. Try it at http://www.obitcentral.com choosing "WebWide Surname Locator" from the menu. Hope this helps. Bill Cribbs
Phreyor, You need to give a little more information for us to help you. What surnames or ethnic groups are you looking for and from what country? The only links to ships arriving at those ports I know of off hand, would be Leo Baca's books that are found in many libraries, --at least in Texas. Hello everyone. My name is Rosalind, and I am interested in the names SMEETON and MILLWARD. Is anyone out there already doing research on either of these families. I believe them to be from Derbyshire UK originally. Perhaps we can share notes if you are. Best wishes. Rosalind.
