Does anyone have any knowledge of how you go about finding an ancestor that came from Holland or Germany around the 1800s. It has been passed down in the family that my gggrandmother was from one of these countries. She died in GA, I believe in Richmond Co. but did live in Columbia Co., GA for a while. I only know the last name and don't have her father or mothers names. They may have live at some time in SC but She and my gggrandfather were married in Augusta, GA in 1830 and I believe she was quite young. Would appreciate any tips that would help me over this brick wall. Beulah
In Reply to message #4 from Margie: Have you tried the Ellis Island site for his arrival? It is a start. Also check with the National Archives, they have naturalization information. If you can give them a start and the fact that he was in a particular state, maybe they can narrow down his place of naturalization You know when he died, do you have a death certificate? If so, check the certificate for the cemetery and see if it is still an active cemetery, check on what records they may still have. Also if you know when, do you know where? Check with the local Historical Society, you will be surprised at what they have. Hope this helps, Diane Eaton Hacker famlygeni@aol.com
I have no idea how far you want to go back, but there is the surname POPE found in early Elbert County Ga which ajoins SC. The travel route south from VA was thru both of these mentioned areas. The Courthouse in Elbert Co. is staffed with people who might could give you some ointers on the OPOE family in Elberton GA who miagrated to Atlanta and points west Good luck.. I sent this site to Sue off list and thought if I posted it to the list, it might help someone. I have it printed and keep it handy. Granted, it is for the US but it might help someone. http://www.censusresearch.com/gensrcs.htm Marge ----- Original Message ----- > I am hoping some kind soul can make a suggestion on how to get past a > block. I am hoping some kind soul can make a suggestion on how to get past a block. I know my great grandfather's name was James Pope. He came from England to the US but I have no idea when or where from or where he landed on arrival. I don't know if he came alone as a young man or with family as a child? I find him in a Mo 1870 census listed as age 45, so I am estimating he was born around 1825. Now looking for James Pope has not been easy, and can anyone suggest any other records that might contain any information? I have his marriage record, and I know when he died although I do not know many other details. Any ideas? Thanks, Sue
Can anyone tell me how I would find what DAR group a relative belonged to? She was from Littleton, NH. This lady was my grandfather's cousin. Thank you. kathy campbell
Darla: Post what you do know... Do you have a family Bible? Are your parents , grand parents, or aunts or Uncles still alive? If not, where are they buried? Check with the cemetery...there is some information there If there is a mortuary listed, are they still in business? If so, ask for the information from the funeral. Is there a local history society in the area that your family is from? Check with them, they are a great source of information, very helpful, and usually will help for a small donation. ( and I much prefer to give them a donation than to pay a government agency for the information) Does your local public library have a Genealogy or Local history section? They usually archive newspapers and such. They are a terrific source also. I hope that these are helpful hints on how to search for "free" and that they will help you get started. Happy Hunting Diane Eaton Hacker famlygeni@aol.com
Darla - If your parents are living, ask them questions as to the names of their parents, grandparents, etc. If not, check your parents' death certificates. Their parents' names should be listed on them - usually the father's name and the mother's maiden name, and the place of their birth. If you know when and where your parents were born, you can also check the first federal census after their birth for their families. There are other avenues to search, but this is a start. Barbara
Darla, You came to the right mail list. All the people on this list are very knowledgeable and helpful. a good starting place is Cyndi's list. www.cyndislist.com and while your at it post who you are searching for on this list, and add some names to your signature so that all of the mail you send will have names you are searching for each time you send mail. check this list every day. Does anyone know approximately when the average person began to have his/her wedding announced in the newspaper? Was it done first in cities? When was the practice of putting wedding license applications in the paper? Thanks, Celia
I am researching the McCorkles in East Tennessee. The story line is they are from Ireland. With the "Mac" in front of their name, would they have originally come from Scotland. Thanks! Celia
I have enough to keep me busy in January it seems. Will post again later. If you have sent a lookup, please be patient. I only am at the library on Wednesdays and every other Sunday. Helene
Please remove me from the list. I could not find the correct place to e-mail for removal so forgive me for sending this to the whole list. I really do not want to read the rude bantering back and forth between certain members. If you have a beef with someone you really should e-mail them personally and not show your aggravation or disdain to the whole list. Thank you, Penny Cole __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send your FREE holiday greetings online! http://greetings.yahoo.com

Seems to me i recall something being posted on this list one time that said; "Raise both hands and repeat after me: We will not initiate or participate in any discussions about any kind of virus on this list. To do so will result in your removal from the list." ============================================ -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Fw: Re: [GEN~TIPS] Salt Lake City Genealogy Service Resent-Date: Mon, 24 Dec 2001 14:48:46 -0700 Resent-From: GenTips-L@rootsweb.com Date: Mon, 24 Dec 2001 14:49:18 -0700 From: "RESmith" <resmith@cableone.net> To: GenTips-L@rootsweb.com David and Key Sly... Well Ron, then i believe it's much more involved than my supposition that i put forth. if, as you presume, they have acess to the total database (for free ??!! That you would normally have to subscribe to !!) and they are then selling that data to you for a fee--WOW !! Sounds like a conflict of interest has also been injected into the equation ? -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: [GEN~TIPS] Salt Lake City Genealogy Service]] Resent-Date: Mon, 24 Dec 2001 14:15:49 -0700 Resent-From: GenTips-L@rootsweb.com Date: Mon, 24 Dec 2001 14:15:11 -0700 From: "RESmith" <resmith@cableone.net> To: GenTips-L@rootsweb.com References: <3C2791F5.5BB8B96@noxnix.com> > This is what i think is happeneing here. While you were close, IMHO you didn't grab the magic ring this go around. Had you visited the web page listed you would have read that they are in Salt Lake City and have access to the LDS records and archives. > I really wonder what Ancestry.com would have to > say about a "professional" genealogist taking info from their database > and reselling it to you. Probably not much -- but their attorneys might have a lot to say. > Sounds like a copyright issue to me ?! Let's not bring that copyright stuff to this list! > "Raise both hands and repeat after me: > We will not initiate or participate in any discussions about any kind of > virus on this list. > To do so will result in your removal from the list." And you are probably correct. Let's hope, then, that the list administrator will be man or woman enough to tell me when they remove me from this list so I can delete the folder from my hard drive.
This is what i think is happeneing here. The individual that posted the message soliciting your business is subscribed to the Ancestry data base so that they can access the information in that database and then charge you for looking it up--which, in some parts of that database, you can get the same info free. I really wonder what Ancestry.com would have to say about a "professional" genealogist taking info from their database and reselling it to you.
