    1. Re: Doctor's records
    2. Being adopted, in searching for my birth mother, A friend of mine called the doctor that was on my original birth certificate. He was retired and his daughter went through her fathers records and found my birth mothers file. They told me some information in them. So some doctors keep their records. I was born in1956, so he has kept his records since then and it was just 2 years ago that they gave the information.

    1. DIFFERENT SS problem/question
    2. bthomas
    3. Since the SSDI does not have records of deaths prior to the 1960s, QUESTION: IF a person died in the 1950s and does NOT show up in the SSDI, is it possible that his SS# can be traced (if he indeed had one) and I can get his SS application information? Are these records available? I have gone to a couple of webpages and looked at several books, and I can't find an answer to this question or find anyone else who has done it. I know the procedure for writing for this information, and the cost for writing if you don't know the SS#. I just don't want to pay the price and later find out that the information was never available to me in the first place. Thanks for any help. Barb Thomas bthomas@wport.com

Judith, It appears you are using Eudora 4.0 for email, if that is so, and if there are not too many changes from 3 to 4, then try this: Single Click the word TOOLS up at the top Single click on OPTIONS at the bottom of that drop menu In the left portion of the window that opens, slide down till you see SENDING MAIL Single click on it Near the bottom you will see a line that says DEFAULT SIGNATURE with a box to the right Single click the little down arrow, and you will get a drop down box Single click on <NO DEFAULT> Single click OK If you ever occasionally want to add your signature file back for a specific message, here is what should work (again providing 4 is same as 3): When you are typing an email, above all the buttons for formatting your text (which you should never do for a list) but below the buttons for the program (like reply and such) there will now be a box towards the left side (should be 2nd from the left) which says <none> It used to say the name of your sig file. Click the little drop down arrow, and select your sig file and it will be attached to that message. To see, change, add a sig file: Single click on the word TOOLS Single click on the word Signatures Select DELETE to remove a file NEW to make another or your first THE-NAME of an existing file to look at or modify it. If you have any questions, please feel free to send them to me. Hope these got you thru, Sherry Lynn (BOUSE) NISLY

    2. In todays Orange County [CA] REGISTER, 6-5-98 Pg Metro 9, is a column by James H Glassman titled: "Al Gore's Internet fiasco will cost us plenty. Mr Glassman is a columnist for the Washington Post and US News and World Report also a Director of the Reason Foundation". The article is approx a 1/4 pg in size, too much to quote or pass on; I'll give a couple items for you to get a little of that going on. Otherwise do a search in Newspapers for REGISTER, or Washington Post to find article. "The Internet project was part of the big 1996 telecom act, but Tauzin [Rep, R-LA] said on the PBS program TechnoPolitics that the FCC isn't interpreting the law as intended. Now, it 'smells like an unlimited tax upon unlimited entitlement'". ". . . few schools really know how to use technology well and 80% are already connected to the Internet". ". . .by running the whole show through a complicated array of boards in a system recently declared illegal by the General Acctg Office." "Scandals. Shenanigans are inevitable when Washington tries to administer the allocation of billions to 30,000 separate schools and libraries." "Salaries. Members of Congress are just now learning that Ira Fishman, a former White House aide who once raised campaign funds for Gore, is being paid $200,000 a yr to head the schools and libraries internet program." Rep John Dingell, D-MI: "We did not vote to have the FCC set up a giant bureaucracy headed by someone paid as much as the President."

    1. Re: Question?? ANSWER!!!!!!!!
    2. Hi Joyce, Sorry, no one would answer your plea concerning a signature file. One of our friends, George, saved the day. Thanks George!!!!!!!!! If you are talking about your signature block for your e-mail, just go up ti the top of your screen where you see Mail, click on that and go to Options and then click on Options. When that you should see several tabs and one says Signature. Just click on that and you can turn on/off your signature there. I am using Microsoft IE so my instructions are based on that. I also have Cybermedia Uninstall and it won't turn on/off your signature block so be careful. I only use that program to REMOVE unwanted programs from my system. Hope this helps. george George gebasden@worldnet.att.net http://www.basden.com

    1. States Mail List
    2. I noticed that some people are asking questions about surnames or geographic areas. Have you ever tried the mail list from rootsweb that are for geographic areas? I belong to several and while some are not as active as others you have people who are asking questions about that state or county in a state or groups of counties such as the Kentuckiana List and people who live in that area who know the area and are able to give advice or help. There is also a biography program in some states that you can subscribe to. Kentucky, I know, has a genealogy tips list for that area. You can't send queries to the biography or tip mail list but there is valuable information. Toni Gorman rockall@aol.com

You can find the solution at the following address (copy and paste it for now <g>): http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q177/0/54.asp If you can't access the site let me know and I'll email you a copy of the procedure. My interpretation of this is that they didn't even find what this individual found 4 years ago -- in their own records. Anyone have any suggestions? Four years ago, he was even able to tell me what ship he was on. Maureen O'Brien>> Maureen, While I do not work for the National Archives I can say that they try real hard to do a great job. Over the last few years they have faced several budget cut-backs resulting in fewer people attempting to do the work previously assigned to many more employees. There is little to do except to try again or possible address a letter to "Civil War Military specialist", stating all the information you have. My questions are, What did you request (exactly)? This is important because they usually will not do research for you. Did you request the information on one of their forms? Which one? Secondly, military service records for the Civil War are contained in several large categories. 1. Volenteers, troops raised by the states. 2. Regulars, US military raised by the federal government. 3. Some Navy records and some Marine records (these not often used). I suspect that your previous researcher found your sailor in "Indexes to Rendezvous Reports, Civil War, 1861-1865. T1099, 31 rolls." This index is on film but the records to which they refer are not on microfilm. These actual records are available at the National Archives in Washington DC. I also suggest that you should also explore the possibility of a pension application. These are indexed comprehensively. 3. Mary, good luck with that one. Each state is different. When I returned from Vietnam and was stationed in Oklahoma City, I ended up seeing a private doctor for skin diseases, especially on my feet from Vietnam which I still fight with today. About four years ago after undergoing Agent Orange testing I tried to locate that doctor so I could get a copy of my file for the VA. Unfortunately he lost his license due to Alcohol and his records where destroyed as Oklahoma did not establish any procedures for patient records. I checked with the State AMA which is where I discovered this info. So you might many to check with the AMA for the state that is involved. Hope you are luckier than I was!!
