    2. M. B. O'Brien
    3. You would probably have the most success if you know the diocese they were ordained for (if they were diocesan priests) or the order they were in (if they were priests who were members of a religious order, e.g, Jesuit, Dominican, etc.). In the latter case, contacting the orders headquarters would be the place to start. 3. Doodle and others, You can write for their military records to : National Personnel Records Center 9700 Page Boulevard St. Louis MO 63132 This is a free service and takes approximately 2 months to fill a request. If you don't hear from them by then, write or call them. (I had the phone # but can't find it now). I wrote for my G-grandfather's records (he served from 1913 til his death in 1936) . Good Luck !!!! 1. Re: Catholic Priests & Nuns
    2. Hello Tipsters, It is beneficial if you know which order with which the priest was associated (Franciscan, Dominican, Jesuit, etc.). If not, the best bet is to contact the Diocese or Archdiocese where he had served. In the USA, MOST (not all) parish priests are from the Dominican order (Order of St. Dominick) or the Jesuits. If you DO know the "order" he studied for, contact the local RC parish & ask where the main "headquarters" (can't think of the proper term for it right now) for that order is located---they should be able to help. Keep in mind that there are priests, brothers & monks in the RC Church---so you may have to do a bit of digging. The same holds true for nuns---there are many different orders (Franciscan, Dominicans, Felicians, Carmalites, Sisters of Mercy, etc.). Their "headquarters" are known as the "Mother House". (The Dominican's is in Newburgh, NY; the Felician's is in Lodi, NJ.) It used to be rather easy to know which order a nun belonged to by the habit she wore---today that isn't so---at least for most of the orders. Many wear "street clothes" rather than a habit & now, most use their given names instead of changing their names. Hope that is a bit of a help to you folks. Sally Huntley

    1. Catholic Priests - or Protestant Priests
    2. I have a similar question, but regarding Protestant Priests of Norway in the 1500s and 1600s. I have an 8-ggrandfather and his father, a 9-ggrandfather, who were (protestant) priests in Norway...and a 10-ggrandfather (the latter's father-in-law) who was a (protestant) Bishop of Bergen, Norway. The 9-ggrandfather had several other sons who also were priests in Norway. I would love to find some history on these individuals, and so far no luck. I've done a fair amount of searching but think I must not be asking the right people/places, as I find it hard to believe there wouldn't be some written history...especially on the Bishop. I'm not even sure who to ask anymore. ANY suggestions would be most welcome! Thanks, Lois

    3. Hi Suz, I have to agree that I doubt there is any secrecy about this but how far records go beyond the local parish/diocese/archdiocese, I just don't know. I think perhaps calling the Archdiocese office and asking how to do this might result in a quick answer. Good luck to you and the other searcher. 1. marriage bonds
    2. L.S..Miller
    3. Can anyone explain the marriage bonds to me? I've gotten copies and am staggered by the money-$500 & $1000 not unusual. Did common folks really have that much money back in 1800s? That would be a fortune back then, when often inheritances were $5. Also, one of the marriage bonds in NC in 1829 was for 500 POUNDS!! Why is this? Weren't they using dollars by this date?? So much to learn, so little time. Thanks in advance for any enlightenment. Linda

    1. Re: Re: Civil War - Another Question
    2. To complete the thread about Civil War Naval records for sailors I will try to respond to Maureen's questions and answers. ***SNIP I did send the request in on a form. I don't have a copy in front of me, but it is the one where you can choose either military records or pension application records. I chose the former. SNIP****** Sounds like you used the correct form. Veterans Records, use NATF Form 80 Certain military records, pension files and bounty-land applications can be requested with this form. One file for one person will cost about $10.00. You must provide them with as much information as possible. The minimum is: name, branch of service, state from which he served, war, whether union or confederate. Additional information: such as unit in which he served and place and date of birth, certainly would insure a favorable result. If your soldier was named Jones or Smith you should have very detailed information before requesting the file. They, in general, will not do research for you. Often they will not photo copies the entirety of a large file unless you make a specific request. If there were several with the same name or not enough information you will simply not get the requested information. ********SNIP Sometime after the Civil War, he was killed "by Indians" while going out west. I have assumed, perhaps wrongly, that he never lived long enough to apply for a pension. SNIP****** Yes, It is always possible that a parent, wife or child applied for a pension based on a soldiers or sailors service. They didn't always get a pension but the denied applications are on file. Had a soldier once with two wives, it was a huge folder. *******SNIP All I know is that he was in the Union Navy and, if memory serves correctly, was an Ass't Paymaster on a vessel that was involved in the Battle of Charleston[?]. SNIP********** The navy file that I spoke of ("Indexes to Rendezvous Reports, Civil War, 1861-1865") are not often used. > > I suspect that your previous researcher found your sailor in > "Indexes to Rendezvous Reports, Civil War, 1861-1865. T1099, 31 rolls." > This index is on film but the records to which they refer are not on > microfilm. These actual records are available at the National Archives in > Washington DC. *******SNIP So, if someone shows up in the index, it is likely that there *are* surviving records? SNIP*********** As a rule yes, there are some exceptions or instances where there is little or no useful information but generally if they are in the Index, there is a file. ********SNIP What kind of application? Pension? (see above)>> SNIP******** The same form can be used for either Military Records or Pension Records, but NOT BOTH on the same form. If you want "William Sternhagen's" military record and his pension application you must submit 2 (two) form 80's. One form must have the Military record box checked and the other form must have the pension application box checked. The information you supply the more likely you will get the correct information. 1. Catholic priests
    2. Does anyone know if there is an archive or web site somewhere that has lists of Catholic priests through history? I think I have one - in Italy - in my ancestors, and tried looking for archive sites under "Vatican" (their sites are rather dated, using older search methods) and there was nothing but touristy stuff; nothing of substance. Are there any Catholic archives that can be accessed, or are they secretive about that stuff? Francesca Sutton
