    1. World War I web site
    2. Below is a post I received from Gilles Lagin, because I had somehow lost his web site and needed to contact him. This man is wonderful; I was trying to find out about my grandmother's brother who was killed at Chateau-Thierry in WWI, found this man's site, and e-mailed him. He found out what unit her brother was in, how and when he was killed, and is going to send me a small history of the unit, and photos of the area where he was killed! He apparently also leads tours for people, and has a small museum he is putting together. (He asked for a photo of my soldier, which I gladly sent him, and his obituary, to put in the museum). I recommend him highly if you're looking for WWI relatives in that area of France. Ellis is now ending, i will made a copy and will send you this. I was very busy during the last month , because I organized an exhibition and a historical conference at Belleau Wood for the 80th anniversary of the battle, there were 500 US Marines, and French Marines, and many people. It was on two days corresponding with the Memorial Day, on 30 & 31 May. It was great days. My exhibition and conference was about the American participation in this battle, and now many French people have learn a part of the history of the young american boys who crossed the Atlantic to fight for the liberty of France. I will made an other exhibiton in july for the anniversary of the battle of the Marne . Also, i led some Americans on the battlefield during last month, two veterans from the 3rd division veteran association, and menbers >from an historical society which work about the great War, and an LT. Col. US Marine retired ( his father was in the AEF and also a Marine in World war One) we have made a pilgrim to each place crossed by his father in 1918, from my area to the Meuse river where he fought the last day before the Armisitce, it was mervellous days for him. I think that he will never forget his travel in France! In some weeks i will include a page with photos from the events of Belleau Wood memorial day in my web site. Sincerely, Gilles Lagin >

    2. <I Aunt had stuck her pictures in a paper album. Some pictures are stuck real good. They are old, so I need to be save. Does any one know a way to get them off.> I'm sure you will receive suggestions on how to remove these pictures, but before you try, Please take your paper album to Kinko's or some other coping business and make copies of the pages, or even scan your pages into your computer. Just in case your removal methods are not successful. These pictures are too valuable to take a chance with. Perkalong

    2. Desperate situations often call for desperate answers. Try steaming up the bathroom & leaving a couple of pages in there to absorb some of the moisture...without getting the paper or pictures really damp themselves. This might loosen some of them without a lot of damage. If it works with a couple of them, you can try more of the book. Karen

    1. advice needed - GALLAGHER
    2. Bonnie M. Gilson
    3. Hello all, I have been searching for the parentage of my 3rd Great Grandfather, Gibson G. "Yankee John" GALLAGHER, for almost 20 years. He was born c1831 in White Pigeon, St. Josephs County, MI. He was married (1st) to Elizabeth LOCKWOOD, 26 June 1855 in Laporte County, IN. He was married (2nd) to Mary A. LEONARD, 14 Aug 1861 in Glandorf, Putnam, OH He died 10 Nov 1890 in Dickens, Clay County, IA. I have both marriage records, the birth records of his children, his death record, his obituary and his probate record. I have him on census records from 1850 through 1880 (I cannot find him on 1840 census nor could I find a Gallagher family in 1830 St. Josephs County, MI). He did not serve in the Civil War according to the National Archives. I cannot find his birth record in Michigan. Now, my question: A letter written by his grandson (who was born 1899) to his son, states "I guess the Gallaghers originated in Dennygol, Ireland but I know the closest they were to Ireland, Dad's grandfather [this would be Gibson's father] was born in New York harbor while the parents were coming to America." Any ideas on what I can do with the quote above? It's just about the only information on my Gibson G. Gallagher that I have not persued because I really don't know what CAN be done with it...I don't even know the name of the child born in NY harbour nor his parents names! Considering that Gibson was born c1831, my assumption is that his father was likley born in NY harbour circa 1800-1810... Any hints from you tipsters on where I can go with this last tidbit of info??? I'm about to finally give up... Regards and thanks, Bonnie (Gallagher) Gilson bgilson@home.com http://www.members.home.net/bgilson/

    3. Its funny you should mention this because there has been a discussion about the use of scanner technology in conjunction with Optical Character Recognition software to do exactly this. We haven't worked it out yet but it would really be something if it could work. Joe de la Poer Power corbet@ix.netcom.com wrote: > Hi there. 2. hi everyone, the only problem with receiving the military records, is that due to a fire they dont have WWII records any longer, I wrote for my grandfathers records, and that is the answer that came back to me. they may still have about 5% of the records, but that is all. Just wanted to pass this on .... Dianne wrote:>>>>>>> You can write for their military records to : National Personnel Records Center 9700 Page Boulevard St. Louis MO 63132 This is a free service and takes approximately 2 months to fill a request.

They plane to help with computer questions regarding genealogy along with all other aspects of research. I see it is still under construction, But these guys have helped me out BUNCHES in the past. The chat room is one of the most friendly and helpful I have ever been on. Take it from someone who uses the net almost totally for my research. This is going to be a one stop site! Marcia

I know locally I can just go and ask if I can look at their Book Sale books. Like last week, I got 3 books on civil war, ea. $4. One book is 102 yrs old, the other 2 or 87 yrs. So check it out. Gail

    1. Save a Portion of Roots
    2. Shirley Hornbeck
    3. How to Save a Portion of ROOTS: Highlight the portion of ROOTS you want to print or save using the Edit feature on the tool bar. To do this, place the mouse cursor at the beginning of the text you wish to save, and old down the right button as you move the cursor to the end of the text. Copy the highlighted portion to the clipboard to do this, press <CTL>C, or on the menu bar click on EDIT|COPY). (The clipboard is an unseen portion of memory that stores information to be copied elsewhere.) Go to Message or whatever it is called in your mail application. This is where you reply to, or send an e-mail. In Eudora, it's called MESSAGE, then go to NEW. Don't put any ADDRESS in as you are not going to send this but do put in a SUBJECT. Ten drop down to the body of the message and hit PASTE. The portion you want should now be there. You can either go to File and Print it out.... or Save AS.... (wherever you want) or transfer it to one of your Mailboxes. I have a ROOTS mailbox and I save all these little tidbits there. 1. Re: Headstone Inscriptions
    2. George Basden
    3. Susan the TEC5 is probably his rank which would have been a Tech Sergeant pay grade E5. The 580 AAA AW BN sounds like the name of his unit with such as 580th. The BN probably stood for Battalion. I am not sure about the CAC. Obviously the WWII is World War II so based on the TEC5 it sounds as if he was in the Army Air Corps. If memory serves me right, the Air Force wasn't officially the USAF until 1945. By they way, the Department of the Army was official established at the same time the Department of the Air Force was established. Prior to that it was known as the War Department.
