As to the scanning of microfische to CD; the appliance part and repair industry is already doing this. As possibly many others are too. They are not doing OCR just CDing the illustrations. AS to OCRing the text; the text should be 'inlarged' to about 10 points. A resolution in excess of 300 per inch of this size text is over kill.  However a good OCR program is worth the expense. So the service is avalable if one can ferret out the provider. And the resultant images should lend themselves to OCRing. Hugh Broesamle hughbro_3@juno.com

    3. Being a Creative Memories consultant, I'm biased, but here's my opinion. Find a CM consultant in your area! The albums are the absolute best! I've been a CM consultant since 1990, and I would use nothing else for my photos. The album pages are nice and thick, acid-free, lignin-free, and buffered (even if you put an acidic postcard on the page, the paper won't soak up the acid and change the composition of the paper page). The binding of the album is patented and is the absolute best. Unlike a 3-ring binder that will tear the pages and eventually get "sprung" so that the rings don't match up anymore, the flex-hinge binding from CM stays together. You should be able to find a CM consultant in your local telephone book. If not, check out the website. If you're in CA or in the mid-Atlantic states, I know of a ton of consultants who would love to talk to you and any other genealogist who knows the importance of "archival" materials! :) Jackie researching REED, YINGLING, CUSHING, DELL, MORRIS, LAY, BALDWIN, JOSENHANS, SAGLE

    3. Jim, funny you asked about DNA. I also was wondering the same thing as I have found an "ancestor" who claims to be related in h is oral history to one of my ancestors and the family has been trying to document that claim since the 1800's. I think it can prove or disprove a relationship. And, I also was wondering how costly it would be. Ella in Michigan

    2. A few days ago, I was visiting my parents and my mom and I went thru an old cedar chest. This is an old chest that was at her grandparents house. There were treasured items such as old letters, postcards, lace, souvineers in it. (My mother had put some of the items in it 30 years ago). Everything seemed to be in excellant shape. 3. Century is one company that sells archival photo supplies. Their number is 1-800-786-7939. There is another company called Light Impression who I believe carries more photo storage supplies than anyone else I have seen. I believe they are located in Connecticut. I will find their 1-800 number and e-mail it to you. By the way, don't place photographs in wooden boxes. 1. Old Photos
    2. Bette Rodey
    3. I have hundreds of old photos that I want to use in my family tree. Becase many are on some type of hard material and in album format I took the photos I wanted to use and had them copied at Staples and Office Max. The cost is less than a dollar a page the quality is photo quality and I have put the originals (including tin-types) back into safe storage. My scanner does ok but the quality I get from Photo Copies are great. Try just one to see if you like it. They can also lighten and darken your photo. You are charged only for the one you want. By the time I use all the ink and wear on my printer by doing them on the scanner, Staples is just as cost effective. Bette
