    1. More organization ideas
    2. Another idea from my professional genealogist friend. Regarding families that are being researched: Have a file folder for each head of family being searched. Put in your working group sheets. (NEVER take the copies of the marriage certificates, etc. to the library with you...too many never get home again.) Carol recommends using a different group sheet for each source found, because sometimes sources conflict. Then one can spread the six (or however many group sheets) out around you and evaluate the possible reliability of each source. When you prove something to your personal satisfaction, then put it on a separate group sheet that is done in a different color, perhaps red. {Remember these are all work group sheets, not the final pretty copy} The different color will help show up holes that need to be filled in yet. If using a microfilm of marriage records and the marriages of Mom & Dad and all 10 kids is in that one film, it isn't necessary to put in 11 group sheets, since all the marriage data is from one source: Microfilm #______, FHC, Marriage records of Knox co TN. Put all the marriage info on the same working group sheet. If you've made xerox copies, they can either go into the work folder, or into your marriage documents folder with appropriate notation on the working group sheet where you can find those copies in a hurry if you need to find them...but always saying where the copy came from. Anyway, the system helps when weeding through bits & pieces, especially with those families where data comes in very slowly. Karen

    1. Re: Organization
    2. A friend who is a professional genealogist made these suggestions to me for keeping things organized that may not be connected. They're called enclosure files and you develop them according to your needs. It becomes relatively easy to find things, and your own family copies can be included, or not, as you wish. Get a box of file folders. Folders should be labeled according to the type of document you're keeping inside: Census records, marriage records, wills, etc. You can, depending on how many copies you're getting, break that down further into more specific categories: Census records, PA 1870, PA 1880, NE 1885. Each file folder has a sheet that summarizes why you made the copy that you put in. A piece of notebook paper will do fine. Each copy gets a number chronologically as it gets put in, and that number corresponds to the number on the summary sheet. Example: copy #3 in the NE 1885 folder has Sides, John (It also has other folks on it, but "John" is the reason I copied it.) copy #4 has Sides, Alexander, copy #5 Ebersole, Benjamin. If you're looking for a particular person, you can glance at the summary sheet and quickly see if you have them on the list. You can also scan each sheet to see if someone you hadn't been looking for previously got copied when you copied John or Alexander or Anna, but since this new one isn't who you were originally looking for, their name doesn't appear on the summary sheet. This can be adapted to families if you prefer. John Sides: copies inside could include: #1 1870 PA census, #2 marriage certificate, #3 1880 NE census, #4 1885 NE census. (I DON'T put duplicate copies in each folder, which is why I separate documents into types...rather than putting all documents into a family folder. I also collect data on people I don't know a relationship to on my families, since most of my families don't have extrememly common names [although I do have a Miller line in PA]. John's marriage certificate could conceivably appear in three folders: his as head of household, his as a child, his wife Mary Gish's as a child) On my working group sheets, I make my notations for reference that John was x# of years old in 1885, NE 1885 census, Zero twp, Adams Co, line#__, page___. See census folder NE 1885, enclosure #3. That way, I can quickly refer to the correct file folder if needed in a hurry. (I do not put the enclosure # on final finished group sheets, just the reference data for documentation.) It's taking effort to regroup my years' worth of stacks of copies into this useable form, but I'm finding it worthwhile. No more pawing through piles--well of the ones I've gotten organized that is. I wish I had known about this system when I started. And yes, I computerize known relatives, but then do a printout for a worksheet, I can add more data as I find it. Karen

    3. the IGI does not contain ALL people of the world, It is a file of those names submitted to the LDS Church to be included. True, there are millions of names there, but maybe no one ever submitted names for your family. It is a good index, but you could also try the Ancestral File at an LDS FHC which may contain names that the IGI does not. 3. Marcia, I think that F868114 is a microfilm number in the LDS collection. If you are near and LDS FHC go look that person up in the IGI files and it will list the film number, names of person submitting infomation, etc. I would guess that 1984 refers to the year it was submitted to the IGI. Hopes this helps. Pam J ---------- From: marcia collins[SMTP:mcollins@sfths.sft434.k12.ks.us] Sent: Tuesday, June 16, 1998 5:15 PM To: GenTips-L@rootsweb.com Subject: IGI FILES ? While it is an excellent index to locate people in an area, at least part of the data on it would have minimal interest to non-LDS. Names show up there because names have been submitted to temple work either by members or done as part of a project to do extraction of data from original sources to provide names for the temple. If your people aren't there, either no member is doing temple work on the family, or the area was not on the list to have been extracted. It does NOT mean that your people weren't where you thought they were from. It just means a little more work to get into the original records yourself to locate your family. If you have questions about temple work & what it means to an LDS person, e- mail me privately. It would have no significance to someone who is not LDS. . . except that to be on the list as having had temple work done will help relatives find them. Karen

    3. Edith, You have written: I have notebooks for each family's family group sheets. I keep the documents in a notebook by family. I use the plastic page holders for the documents. As I'm accumulating more paper, I am thinking about just putting them in file folders by type of document (Ex. census) and by family. This is my weak spot. I guess one problem is that it is more fun to play on the computer than to do the actual filing. Maybe I need to print out a list of the subfolders in my genealogy folder and use that as a guide for filing the actual papers. How do the rest of you deal with the paper? --------------- Let me tell you a trick I learned - I have made a pedigree chart and numbered each name on the chart according to rule. Then I made a file folder for each number. Men are always even numbers and women are always odd. I only have folders for men at this point. My father is 2, his father 4, his father 8, etc. If you have trouble on the numbering system let me know. Then for the information I gather for that man's family I file within that folder. If the folder becomes too full I split it up as such: #4 folder would be split up by his children in order of birth - #4-1, #4-2, #4-3 etc. This will keep you going for quite a while. Then all you must remember to recoup the information is the family surname and approximate generation. Of course on the label I write the # of the folder and the name of the party - #4 Smith, Michael. You could even go so far as the add 1875-1945. Hope this helps someone. I started out with the notebook too but became overwhelmed with papers in no time. Patsy patsy@penn.com

    3. The IGI lists several hundred million names of deceased persons throughout the world. The index does notc ontain records of living people. Many names in the index come from vital records from the early 1500s to about 1885 (extracted from microfilmed records). Others have been submitted by members of the LDS Church. I don't think there are too many records from Italy that have been extracted yet, but there are more all the time. Remember there are two separate parts to the IGI--the original and an addendum containing additional records--make sure you check BOTH. There is a leaflet called "Using the INternation Genealogical Index on compact disc" that is available at your local FHC for just a few cents. Also make sure you run the different kinds of searches -- Individual, Marriage and Parent-- You can find children of a set of parents grouped together in a Parent search--wonderful for connecting entire families. The Ancestral file is submissions from all over the world creating a great linked family tree. However, remember that these are submissions from people and there are many mistakes. Be sure to do further research to verify the information. There is also a leaflet on "Using Ancestral File" available at ther FHC. Included in both the IGI and Ancestral File is information on how to track down the source of the records. 3. Hi All, I had to get this on the web for all those WALKERs searching out there. I had an uncle whose name was Heinrich Leonhardt Niederwohrmann who was born in Geestemunde, Germany, about 1895. He entered this country (sometime before 1915) and they wrote the correct name. He changed his name legally, sometime between 1916 and 1919, because he was tired of people saying, "Niederwhaaaat?". Even the judge said it and he responded that was exactly why he wanted it changed. When he was asked what he wanted it to be he said he did not care as long as it could be pronounced easily. The judge rattled off some names like, Smith, Jones, Green and finally he said Walker and that is when Heinrich said that name was ok with him. The judge changed the spelling and gave him the new name. If I do not tell anyone, they will not know where to search, thinking he came to this country with the name and will keep looking for Henry Leonard WALKER. These lists are archived so now he is on the web, just in case someone is looking for a lost relative with a name like Neiderwohrmann from Geestemunde, Germany. A long time ago I looked on a map and Geestemunde was about 100 miles from Frankfort. (sp) His mother's name was Anna Loring and his father was Fritz Niederewohrmann. 3. Hi All, Once I worked with someone who's name was (shall I call her Smith). Everyone told her she did not look like a Smith. When her dad died, they had trouble collecting his insurance because his name was not Smith. His name was hard to pronounce there for he decided (not legally) to change his name. When he married he did so under his "new name" and his wife did not know it. I am sure this has happened more than once.
