    2. Anna M. Langley
    3. Sue, I submit our town's local obits here and get to search them and have the entire obit typed and sent indtead of just the title line , just for being a contributor. I feel a sense of accomplishment when someone requests one of the obits I submit and then writes back that they found a loved one. Hope this will lead you to at least look at our site. http://www.rootsweb.com/~obituary/ Good Luck !!! Anna M. (ORY) Langley alangley@hiwaay.net

His 1880 census for Clark Co. shows he was born in Nov. 1853 his wifes name is Martha ( Stewart) Hill. If anyone has access to the voter regiseration records, would you do a look-up for me. 1. My Chin Scratcher for the Day...
    2. Dale Warren
    3. Hello Friends: I came across something last night that still has me scratching my beard in puzzlement. I was going through FTM Family Tree CD#5, researching the name CRADER. Following the name back on Tree #6021 I came to the patriarch whose name was Samuel James CARUTHERS (1792-1855). That's right; all his offspring had the name CRADER, including his grandson Jean Neville (Neuville) Crader (1849-1939). Then I get to Tree #1283, follow the CRADER name back to the patriarch who is Jean Neville CARUTHERS! Yes, the grandson of Samuel James. I know there must be a simple reason for the different surnames being used interchangeably but I can't see what it is. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks... Dale

    1. IGI-Why non Mormons named
    2. I am not 100% sure about this, but I seem to remember one of my grandmother's sisters becoming a Mormon years ago. I remember overhearing a conversation between my mother and grandmother saying that they had received a letter from this aunt (no one had seen or heard from her for many years). Anyway, the gist of the conversation was that this woman was trying to gather information from the family to include in her family tree when she joined the Mormon church. My mother seemed to think that the Mormons believed that they could pray dead relatives into heaven, and that's why they put all of their relatives in the IGI even the ones that were not Mormon. I don't know if this is right, but it seems logical to me that if you are a Mormon, and you are putting together your family tree, you would list all of your relatives. Even the Baptists and Lutherans, or else they would have big gaps in their family trees. Bob

    3. Hello all, Here I go, going to open my mouth again, hope I don't get in trouble. :) I surprisingly observed a few yrs. back, with my first experience at the FHC, that my deceased mother-in-law and many members of her family were listed in the IGI. What was more surprising was that she/they had been included in the "Mormon" traditional manner. This was in spite of the fact that the family was long-time, traditional German Lutherans, and many of her descendants still are, My best wishes to all of you, Gloria Daum

    3. I volunteer in my local FHC where we cut out all obituaries, births, marriages, anniversaries, etc. from our local newspaper and paste them in a binder under the different catagories for each year. It really isn't such a big job when it is done weekly. We also take the book and using a word processing or data base program index the names. This book is then sent to the main Family History Center in Salt Lake City where they microfilm it and return the original book to the library. There is no charge for the microfilming. This film is then available to libraries that order the film for temporary or permanent usage. It is a great genealogical tool--no matter where you live. 1. Re: IGI files
    2. It is not my idea to turn the answer to IGI question into a religious discussion, except the IGI represents a record that is very important to those of the LDS faith. If you are not LDS and found your ancestors there, please do not get angry with me, just read through to the end and take what I'm saying for whatever it may be worth. It is offered as explanation, not as challenge to anyone's religious beliefs or defense of LDS beliefs. Many of the people on the IGI were not born Mormon--may not have been Mormon while alive. (If you note the dates in the baptism, endowment, sealing column--they are often many, many years after the individual's death.) Latter-day Saints believe that Jesus Christ set the example for us in being baptized by immersion, that it must be done by proper authority (hence going to John the Baptist). LDS believe that baptism is essential to enter the Kingdom of God, but that because not everybody has opportunity to hear the fulness of the gospel in this life & be baptized that God, being no respecter of persons, allows people to be baptized by proxy for others...hence baptism for the dead. (See Corinthians where the subject of baptism for the dead is raised...it isn't the question of the act of baptism for the dead being discussed, but the lack of belief in a literal resurrection.) LDS also believe that marriage and the family were meant to be eternal--hence the sealing of families into eternal units. LDS believe in the principle of free agency, that when people hear the fullness of the gospel on the other side they may accept it, or not, as they choose. If they accept it, they will need baptism by the proper authority. It is done on their behalf, by proxy in the temples. If they don't want it, even though it may have been done, they don't have to accept it in their behalf. Now, comes the question that many raise because they want their ancestors to be whatever they were when they were alive. IF the LDS Church IS true, then their work on behalf of deceased relatives in the temple is one of the greatest humanitarian efforts on the face of this earth because it makes the benefits of baptism and family sealings available to those who didn't have the chance while on the earth...and those individuals have the opportunity to accept that effort on their behalf--or say, "no thank you, I don't believe I will." IF the LDS Church is NOT true, then the time spent in the temples is just time spent in an activity that is meaningless in the eternities--no more important that someone spending hours watching television, reading, or any similar pasttime--but nevertheless, provides those who avail themselves of the IGI a wonderful resource to locating ancestors if they happen to find their people on it. . . and not important enough to get upset to find a Baptist, Catholic, Buddist, athiest, or whatever--ancestor on it that may have been baptized after his death by someone who wanted to share what (s)he believed with someone they loved. If it isn't the true church, it has no efficacy. Karen

    3. You might also try looking in the Family history Library Catalog - which is also on the LDS Library computers (and on fiche). You can search this for surnames (in case you have published information regarding that particular surname), but you can also search it for your locality. This can provide you with records/books/microfilm/fiche that may be available to search in your area (Taverniti) that may lead you further down your search path. Please do ask one of the librarians for help in your search. They are always willing to help and full of information. Good luck.
