When my email is received, Outlook Express automatically sorts my genealogy email to various folders: Names, Locations (cities, states, immigration), General, etc. I am subscribed to almost 20 lists. Before scanning over my messages, I sort them in subject order. By doing this, I noticed that everyday I get two types of duplicate messages. Mostly I get messages that someone posted to multiple groups (SCRoots,NCSCRoots, MarionSCRoots, etc.) That is just someone expecting to find information on a person in South Carolina. However, occasionally, I receive exact duplicates of a message from the same group. I found two causes for that. One is that my isp server times out after a short while. When I receive a large number of messages, the ISP times out and does not delete the received messages. When I call back, I get a second copy of the same messages. (Why it doesn't time out the second time is a mystery to me.) However, last week I did get duplicates from one or more listservers, but only one day. This is not the norm. I seldom get duplicates from the list, but it occurred about the time this thread began or shortly thereafter. If you are having problems, check with your ISP and let them monitor the situation for a while and they can tell you if the problem is theirs or the listservers. Hope this helps, Buck -----Original Message----- From: Elaine Maddox <elainetm@worldnet.att.net> To: GenTips-L@rootsweb.com <GenTips-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Wednesday, June 17, 1998 11:22 PM Subject: Re: Repeated messages >> Ref: Receipt more than once >> >> I have also received a number of messages doubled and even once or thice >> tripled. All of us have seen the request about census readings, and other types of queries. So I thought add some info for everyone. You know of course ,that censuses were taken by the gov.every 10 years from1790 to the present;these head counts were called population schedules and that thats why we look for mircofilm but we also can have a bonus for some years in nonpopulation schedules One of these is a mortality schedule, which was taken along side the population schedules in 1850,1860,1870,1880.It is a listing of those people who died in the year preceding the begning of the census taking on1 June of these years that is for instancefrom1June 1849 to June1 1850 In the morality schedule the following info is stated name, age, sex, color, whether married or widowed, place of birth occuption, month of death, cause and even the number of days ill. The 1850 census is particulary intersting in that it is the second timthat anyone other than head of house was identified You can find these in the NA they have succeeded in getting copies of most of them. There are also agriculture, manufacturing also hope these help the newbies alittle. Paula
I had to be off line a couple of days and when I returned my mail box was full. Since that time, I have not gotten any mail from the several lists I am a subscriber to. Do I need to re-subscribe?? Jeanette
I did forget to mention that the rolodex works great! It takes up less space then a filing cabinet. I have several rolodex's. One for family, one for business, one for internet addresses, etc. Debby
I am with all of you that have paper work on top of the filing cabinet, on top of the desk, on top of the kitchen table, etc............. I am now up to 6, 3 drawer filing cabinets. What I did just start and is helping alot, is I got one of those catalog holders from the office supply store. In one of the catalog holders I have my maiden name family. And in the other I have my marriage name family. They are so easy to have at your finger tips. I did do the folder bit with a different folder for each surname, that worked until you start reaching over 100 folders, there is no room. I put all the odds and ends in the file cabinet, but keep the good info and documents on the family in the catalog holders. Well that is my 2 cents worth. Debby
I use Eudora Lite for my e-mail program. It's a freeware program you can get at <http://eudora.qualcomm.com/eudoralight/>http://eudora.qualcomm.com/eudorali ght/ Eudora lets me edit the e-mails I get, which is the main reason I chose it over some other e-mail programs, so if there's something I want to keep, I cut out the parts I don't want, and change the subject line to something descriptive. I can then file the e-mail in one of the folders I have set up. I've got one for each family line, plus one for each ethnic group I'm researching, one where I save all my listserv instructions, one named "Web Sites to Visit", etc, etc, etc. I don't work for Eudora or anything, but I like the flexibility it gives me on filing my e-mails so well I'm thinking about popping for the $40 Pro version, which is, I'm sure, why they give out the Lite version for free. You can also demo the Pro version (which I did and I liked it really well), but after the free trial period, you can't use the Pro address book with the lite version--in other words, it's easy to move up from Lite to Pro, but messy moving back from Pro to Lite. I've read that they are already selling a second Homespun cookbook. Whether this information is listed at the rootsweb site, I don't know. Hopefully, someone knows. Good luck. A most reputable group. You must already subscribe to some of their links to have gotten this. Myra is the genealogy columnist for the LOS ANGELES TIMES, and she also writes an excellent column for Ancestry.com, and heads one of their chat groups too. I have learned a lot from her. Their genealogy chat groups are excellent. Elizabeth theshadow wrote: > Hi Folks, > Did anyone else get this msg. along with a 10 pg. block of info > from these folks? Why is it that sometime the end of my Gentips letters say GENTIPS ect, and other times I am getting familyworkings tag line? It seems that when this happens, it has come through a different route. I wondered if the long message was what sometimes caused my mail to come to me twice. My ISP server said if there were many letters, and then said something about taglines, that I really didn't understand...the gist of it being tag lines and list messages. Is familyworkings the list owner? Marcia
HI Everyone I had a computer crash today when my isp went down, with me doing bookmarks, and of course I lost them all. I am lost now. What I really need it the site that had the census on it for most of the states. Someone posted it a few weeks ago and it has been a gold mine, can you please help me. Thank you so much. Rose Shiver
There are rules for submitting names for temple ordinances, most important "If the person you are submitting was born within the last 95 years, obtain permission from the person's closest living relative. In some instances the relative may wish to postpone the performance of the ordinances." Hopefully, these were adhered to for your relatives. One of the most important concepts of the LDS church is Free Agency. We all have it whether living here or in life after death. Thus, the ordinances performed can be accepted or rejected by the person. If they chose to reject, no matter, we have performed our duty by availing them of that opportunity. It may be a waste of our time but that is for us to decide. In any case the IGI is a LARGE index of people and can give many searching for their family clues to pursue their research further. I know I have found children missing in families on my lines, and can contact those submitting the information to share. That is a bit slower than the 'Net, tho! Use it as a good source. I came across some of my family in the IGI that were sealed by a Mormon relative back in the 1960's, even though they weren't of the Mormon faith. It sort of made me mad because I thought this very presumptuous of that .............
Hi Everyone: I found this interesting. My gr-grandfather's name was Michael. They named their 1st born (son) Mike, he died at and early age. They named their 5th son Mike and 6th son Mike both of which died less than 1 year of age. Then they named their 13th son Mike, he lived a long life. They also had 2 Irene's. The 1st Irene died the same year she was born. Claudia
Hello all, The help I have received from this list is immeasurable, I have met some of the kindest, and wittiest people here. I enjoy it immensely.! I have been able to knock down HUGE brick walls with y'alls help. I don't know how I can ever thank you enough.... However, I have now come to the place where It is in my best interest to have a professional help me. I am using Jeanette Prouse, and am very pleased , both with her kindness and her rates. She had made absolutely no promises that will ultimately disappoint me, she has simply said, I will do the best I can do...what more can I ask? She has much more experience than I , and has access to much larger store of information. She will be able to know where and what to look at and for. She was very clear on rates, and what to expect. SHE had helped me much before I inquired as to rate...in fact that is what led me to ask if she ever worked for hire. I had received so much from her for free, she did it for the sake of helping, that I would have been embarrassed to have asked yet one more thing. As I said, I have received SO MUCH from this list, both in terms of missing ancestors, and knowledge, that I just wanted to give credit where credit is due......The point being that if there is to be a charge, it most certainly should be clear prior to receiving a bill. I believe all responsible persons would do this. Marcia Moore Collins
