    3. Hi Folks, I have bought and used Broderbund products many times and I was grateful to get the information. I use FTM for my data base. However, I am a little hard headed when it comes to "giving" the fruits of my hard work to a company who then turns around and sells that same information for a profit. I will gladly and readily share it, for free---do not even charge copying or postage fee. Paradoxical to say the least! However, when a company advertises a product, I make the free choice to buy. I do resent Broderbund not paying for information or at least offering a gift certificate as a small compensation for work done. I commend their product and marvel at their ingeniousness in producing the program which makes the end-product possible. So, what do I do about having information which could be made available to others? I make a copy of my family group pages, the notes I've gathered, and an alphabetical index of the names within the group sheets; put it into a binder; and, donate it to my local library's genealogical section. I also donate a copy to libraries in the area from which my ancestors migrated as there may be relatives of sibling ancestors still living in the area. This costs very little and I am able to share with a large group of people. It may not have the "global" effect of publishing with Broderbund, but it serves the same purpose---sharing with others. Sometimes it has a residual effect of catching the attention of a "satellite" family and I get a whole wealth of information I never knew existed because I did not know the married name of a relative. Just my two cents worth. LCranston Remember: Today is the Future of your Ancestors and the Past of your Decendants.

    3. Information submitted to the Ancestral File is added to that file for anyone to use, no LDS temple ordinances are done for anyone submitted that way. It is a tool for bringing together those researching the same lines. Temple work is only done on files submitted to the Church by a totally different method. ---------- From: marcia collins[SMTP:mcollins@sfths.sft434.k12.ks.us] Sent: Thursday, June 18, 1998 6:04 PM To: GenTips-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: Ancestral File (was: Re: FTM vs. Copyright) Well folks, at the risk of asking a dumb question, IF you submit a GEDCOM to LDS, Does this, or does this not then allow for them to be baptized or sealed? into the Mormon church. now, the reason I ask this is..I found an ancestral file via the LSD church. There is a date of Baptism into the Church, and the name of the submitted. I have made contact with the submittor, she is NOT Mormon, and had no idea how the sealed, baptized thing happened. ( the ancestor was a Baptist minister) While I am not unduly upset by this, and I do not want this to be a religious debate, the question remains? Who decides when or if a group of ancestors become sealed into the Mormon Church? 3. I have read all the many responses on this question also. I triled to personally thank each and every one who did - but may have missed some with this too. I really wanted to thank Kay Pacheco for forwarding my message to the Texahoma list for help. Many of those responses helped a great deal. Thank you all so very much. By way of update: I tried the 1910 Census Soundex already - with no luck. I need to check the 1900. Grandpa would not be on there - but maybe his parents would be. I contacted the Western Heritage Ranch Museum and they told me that all the brands are registered by county - there is no state agency which keeps a list of all of them. There may be a listing for Big O in many - or all - of the counties in Texas. The person at the Museum I spoke with took my name and telephone number and stated that if he came across any information in the normal course of his research - he would let me know. I also contacted the Department of Agriculture and they verified that counties are the ones who keep brand registers. The person I spoke with here said maybe Bigo meant Odessa - well maybe - no way to know for sure. I do not have a birth or death certificate for him. The record I have is documents from the Washington State Department of Corrections. Something just struck me. I will contact the County in which he was arrested and see if they can provide me with a copy of his case. Maybe this has more information. I do not believe he died in Texas and anyway - do not have a death date for him. I tried to search for a SS# - no luck. Thank you all so very much. Please keep me in mind should you have any other insights. I will keep you all updated. Deborah Donegan info@buyersmarketplace.com

    1. Re: Organization
    2. I don't like to keep info in my e-mail.  It only makes my e-mail too cumbersome. So,  if I have info in e-mail or mailing list, from web page or whatever, I use my edit feature and copy to the notebook or word pad ( if larger).  Then I go to my Genealogy folder and open the appropriate folder and paste.  This allows all my genealogy to be together. Within the large Genealogy folder, I have many folders.  Each family has a folder for info I am pretty certain about.  I have a Research folder  within each family for things I need to look into later. I also use Legacy to keep all my certain info together.  Each person has an info part that allows me to tell a story about a certain highlight of their life. I also have a folder that is for urls to look into later.  I use the same notebook feature to copy and paste.  Anytime I am searching or reading my mail, I open the notebook for easy access.  I just keep it minimized at the bottom of the screen.  That way I don't have to rely on my writing it down. If I want to go to it, I copy it and paste it in the web search area. I do house clean occasionally by deleting info in the folders if it is in Legacy. Paperwork is kept in a file cabinet.  It is organized like the computer for easy finding. Hope this helps. Karen Layus

    3. Dear George and List readers... One of the neat features that I really enjoy as a resource is the following address: http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html The USGS maintains this database of all the places in our country and some of their alternate names. So if you had Johnson Township back in the early 1800's it might now be Grant City or something like that. So I have used this service, and it will lead you to the townships. Remember though, that it shows what the place is called and where it is located NOW. You might need to check other sources to find out where it was at the time you are looking for. So far it has really worked well for me. --- Terry This E-Mail from Terry D. 1. GenServ - A Great Genealogial Tool
    2. Terry Smith
    3. Dear List readers... GenServ is a commercial service. We do charge for memberships as muchas as $12 a year or $1 a month. For seniors it is .50 Cents a month. However, and here is what we believe is the "tip" portion of our service. We have many free services on GenServ. Let's say that you are searching, have run up against brick walls, and want to see if GenServ might be a possible resource for you. Our Free GenCount service would allow users to query the system to see if their particular and unique surname is represented. So far, 10,000 people have loaded their various databases, and found tons of information. Example: When I started out, I had about 6000 to 10,000 records in my database. Using the resources of the Internet along with GenServ, my database is now over 122,000 records strong, and I have enough information from my contacts to keep me busy for the foreseeable future. So when I recommend or give the group "A tip" regarding GenServ I do so because it works. Let's say that after checking GenCount, you find ONE particular surname that you are excited about. You can then use the ONE-TIME GenSample report to get a listing of that surname. It includes everything that normal users get that evidence what we have on the system. Members and non-members would get the same report. When still unsure about the look and feel of GenServ, people have the chance now to use the Free Demo System at http://demo.genserv.com. Because I have used the system, and found it most useful, I have volunteered my time to seeing that it continues to be a success. Doing so serves me and everyone! All of these services are FREE!! Totally! If others would like to offer their services or offerings FREE to the readers at Gen-Tips, I think I would love to see them. All of us need help and ANY assistance is always appreciated. I sincerely hope that you use any resource that will help you achieve your research goals. GenServ for me has been a GREAT resource, and the contacts made there have helped me keep from re-creating the research wheel. I've saved thousands, and that is a TIP worth knowing about... 1. Re: SUBMITTING FAMILY RECORDS
    2. Buck McDaniel
    3. That sounds great for those in Ohio, but I live in Georgia and would not have access to the information.  I can think of a better solution: Every program I have tried allows me to select which fields of the data I would like to export and which ones NOT to export.  If when you submit information to FTW (for example), you only include names, dates and marriage dates as well as your name and contact information, you will allow others to find their trees and contact you for details.  If you find a program that makes information private for the living, you can include all your names and only the minimum data needed for someone to learn if your tree is the one they are looking for. By doing this, you protect your work from being "copyrighted" by someone else, and still allow it to be used by those you desire to have it.  Also, if you sell your work, you are not violating copyright because your data contains a different set of information. I hope this is helpful I am interested in hearing comments about my opinion. 1. Re: FTM vs. Copyright
    2. Buck McDaniel
    3. I highly advise anyone to consult an attorney before releasing ANY rights to any of their work.  At the least, read the agreement and see what your rights are before deciding. I am not a lawyer but I will share my opinion. (not to be mistaken for legal advise) First I would read any agreement very carefully.  If I didn't understand a part of it I would not agree. I would guess that if you give up copyright rights to FTM, unless otherwise agreed, you would NOT be allowed to distribute copies of your work without FTM permission. I don't know about FTM, but I hear that if you submit work to the Mormon database you are allowed to distribute work you submitted for free, but you may not sell it. Either way, I would not agree to release ANY rights without understanding what I was doing.  That may mean getting a lawyer to interpret the agreement for me.
